Walmart's new parking

The pregnant parking thing annoys me. Pregnancy is either by choice or stupidity (I guess there is 1 percent where birth control didn't work) so why do they get special parking?

Well some disabilities are caused by stupidity too, but they still get placards. And some pregnant women legitimately cannot get around very easily but still need to get shit done. What's it to you if someone chooses to help them out by designating a closer spot?
    Exactly.

I see this as a courtesy. It's optional.

It's really no different than someone opting to give up their seat on a bus/subway for a pregnant lady. It's not "special" so much as it is just courteous.

They get special parking because when you're pregnant, it can be incredibly hard to move around. I'm guessing you also wouldn't give up your seat on a train or bus for a pregnant woman?
  • I had terrible sciatica when I was pregnant which made standing and walking (and sometimes sitting/laying down) very painful... Only then did I take advantage of pregnancy spaces.
  • If there is a medical need in pregnancy, like where a woman has been put on bed rest, couldn't she qualify for a temporary disabled place card? I know we have temp ones here, I was given one when I had a bad case of pneumonia and while I could go out I really couldn't walk very far, once it cleared up my temp card expired and if I tried using I'd get a nice little ticket.

I only see pregnancy parking here at Babies R Us and the dollar store. So...not super helpful for actual things one needs.

Yeah, you can. But I could totally see falling into that middle ground where you'd appreciate a closer courtesy spot, but don't necessarily want to take one away from someone who needs it even more.

Babies R Us is totally a marketing thing. Chances are if you're pregnant and going there, you're coming to work on your registry, and they'll pander to you just as much as humanly possible!

  • reminds me of the customers i had to deal with at the local zoo. i was out directing traffic and they were going to a lot farther back. well this guest came pulled in asked if they could park closer and i said no he said but i have kids.... really you and everyone else here. if your crabbing about having to park farther out and walking in then walk around the zoo why the hell did you come to the zoo in the first place. well when said guy left later that day he almost ran me over.

You COULD, but at least here in 2007, it was pretty difficult. Especially being as I was not supposed to be out of bed, so my Doctor was not at all helpful.

ETA - and not all pregnancy conditions are so bad that you even qualify for a handicapped spot, but they make things more difficult nonetheless.
  • The thing with me is there are a lot of people with issues who could use the same courtesy.  I was on crutches once.  Certain could use a parking spot up close, but I was not given a handicap card.

My DH had a BAD case of gout last week.  The boy could not wear shoes.  Barely could walk.  No one is going to give him a handicap sticker for a few days of gout.  But let me tell you he could have used it going to the pharmacy to get meds.

So basically those with temporary ailments that could use a closer spot are just SOL.   Dare I say some of those people need it more than a 12 week pregnant woman.

      It just never ends.

Drive through pharmacies are the greatest thing ever; I swear they all need one. Cuz chances are if you're visiting a pharmacy, you're not doin' so well.

IDK if the 12 week thing was directed at me but I'm certainly not parking in them now.

We don't have one in my town.

ETA - no it was not.  Simply stating a 12 week pregnant woman is able to use that parking spot too.   And could get to it before the 41 week pregnant woman.

k :) And yeah they could... but so could the PPs who said they park in them anyway because nobody can tell they're NOT pregnant. I just don't think that's a good enough reason to not offer them. If I owned a business with a parking lot, I'd have one. And changing tables in the men's restroom.

changing room should be in all restrooms.

Parking spots.   Not so much IMO.

Fun fact - one of the Wegmans in our area has not only a changing table in the men's room but a selection of diapers in just about every size. Now that's some awesome customer service. H was telling me this the other night and was wondering why all men's rooms don't have at least a changing table.
  • I think Walmart would do more service to society by offering free, regular shuttle service to and from stores.

  • UO: Let's just allot 5 SS spaces per parking lot - if you have the need or balls to own you're super special-ness and park there, then have at it. Regular H spots will remain of course.

Seriously though. My mom is super overweight and has trouble walking. Does she get a spot for obesity?
What? Nobody called you a bitch, or posted any gifs in response to you.

Also, yes. Morbid obesity is a disability which can qualify for a handicapped placard.

Um, yeah? Lots of obese people have handicap placards.

ETA and WTH, nobody called you a bitch, via gif or otherwise.

Are you talking about sophaboboba?  That's her siggy.  You should know that.

And yes, a ton of obese individuals have handicap placards for parking.

There is a level of courtesy that SHOULD be taken with special parking, that unfortunately not everyone adheres to.  You could have the barely pregnant person taking the only pregnancy spot making it unavailable for the 9-month pregnant women that comes by 2 minutes later, who now has to walk a mile from a far space. There's nothing legally wrong with it, but that was a douche bag move on the part of the barely pregnant chic who didn't really need the spot.

In my case, as stated earlier I do have handicap parking.  And there are definitely bad days where I need it more than others. If I am having a good day and there is only one handicap space available, and I feel like I am capable of walking from a normal spot, I won't park in the handicap space, even though I have every legal right to. I just know that there are people more disabled than me that day who may need that space. If I'm able to walk like a normal person, there's no reason for me to take advantage and use the close space I don't need.  And I would feel horrible if I took the last spot then saw some frail old lady with a walker having to trudge all the way across the lot because there wasn't a space for her. (Of course, this moral high ground often goes out the window during Christmas shopping, movie theater on a Friday night, heavy rain/snow, or other times that I REALLY want the close space).
