April Fools Day

Re: April Fools Day

  • My family sounds damn tame by comparison. We did jello in a glass with a little fruit punch on top, salt in the sugar bowl, the rubber band around the sprayer nozzle, never scary shit.

But we don't even do that anymore, because I don't care for pranks. Even the harmless ones waste food, and that's a sin.

That got my mom EVERY YEAR.

We also sewed the fly on my dad's underwear shut one year, but he didn't happen to grab that pair that morning... didn't discover it til he was at the airport traveling for work a few days later. Had to drag all his shit into a stall. Sorry, Dad.

lol I'm excited you started this thread.

One year in college, I waited till 1 am (so it had officially been April Fool's Day for 1 hour), called my parents, and told them I was in jail.

Another year, I called my best friend who was studying forensics, and told him I had been driving the night before and committed a hit and run. I got my voice to shake and everything. Told him there was blood in the grill of my car and I had no idea what to do. That's when I learned how good of a friend he was, because I really expected him to tell me I needed to turn myself in, but instead he used his forensics expertise to tell me how to cover up the crime.

When I was 16, my best friend and I drove around all night collecting those election signs that stick in people's yards. We went to our guy friend's house and COVERED his entire front yard in them. It was insane how many there were. Then we used neon pink sidewalk chalk to write APRIL FOOLS on the street in front of his house. But a car parked over it during the night. My friend woke up, looked out his bedroom window which faced the front lawn, saw all the signs, and then saw the word "FOOLS" written in the street.

Last year FI and I put an offer on a house that was accepted. During the house hunting process FI had commented a few times that we needed to make sure the houses we looked at weren't haunted (only half joking). So I called him pretending to be all upset that I had googled our house and a murder had happened there.

    Mmm... what else.... :)
The bolded makes you sound sketchy as fuck and I am nooooooooooootttttttt into it.
That was the craziest part, was that he believed him. I slam on the brakes and get out of my car to help turtles in the road. He knew me well enough to know I would never do a thing like that.

Also this was when I was like 17 or something and a total jackass. Would I say such a thing to someone now? No, absolutely not. But his reaction is what sticks in my memory.

    Edited for box situation.
This is what you posted in your thread above:

That's when I learned how good of a friend he was, because I really expected him to tell me I needed to turn myself in, but instead he used his forensics expertise to tell me how to cover up the crime.

So which is it? It gave you pause? Or you thought he was SUCH a good friend that he was going to help you cover up a crime where you possible could have killed another person.
    =----------------------etf boxes-------------------------------------

Sorry, I meant that in the tongue in cheek way of how we say who to put in your bridal party based on "who would you call at 3 am to bury a dead body." And yeah, I was surprised that he believed it. I whole-heartedly thought he'd call me out right away for trying to prank him.

I'm not trying to make an excuse but I had known this guy our whole lives and knew he had never been affected by such a situation before. Obviously a real life situation is a horrible tragedy and not anything to joke about. I shouldn't even have listed that prank in the post, because obviously it's not a funny situation.

It's just one of those things where the time and place and person worked and his reaction was surprising to me, like I said. I really was not trying to be offensive to anyone, and I apologize.

    Yeah still fucked up. Nope.
Seriously. This shit is not funny at all.

If you are not making his reaction up (which I still hope, and think, you are), I would strongly advise against continuing to share it with people. It is so beyond fucked up, and your friend needs to come to Jesus.
  • Novella, you seemed all excited to share your story until I called you out on it. I assume you expected everyone to think it was just so hilarious you made up a story about a hit and run, and then your friend said he'd help you cover it up. HAHA! Great laughs!

I'm sorry, but I just find it incredibly disturbing that you pranked someone with that and then again, thought his reaction was so great you had to share it with us.

Yes and your earlier post about it made me re-think it, and I realized it was only funny in the moment, in that particular time with that particular person, but in real life and in a general sense it's not funny at all.

So my apology is genuine. Like I said, I shouldn't have included it in the post. It's not like I haven't posted dumb shit before, but this one was particularly dumb because of the content and what that means to some people. I can't delete it cuz we don't do that here, so all I can do is realize my mistake and why it was dumb and offensive (which I have) and apologize (which I have). Not trying to be an asshole. I'm legitimately sorry.

Y'all, I just April Fooled myself HARD.

Part of my job is pulling mailing lists for a large nonprofit. We're trying to figure out why one of their Christmas mailings didn't bring in much revenue this year, and our director of operations found a discrepancy in something that I had done. She only checked a few files, but when I checked the rest they all had this huge discrepancy. I spent almost an hour frantically searching for documentation of why I did what I did, because I honestly couldn't remember. Then I started thinking, what if I just estimated the numbers because we were so busy at that time? I was panicking that I would get in big trouble for this. I was in the middle of fessing up to my boss when it occurred to me to check one more thing. Sure enough - yes, we had all forgotten that it was actually supposed to be this way. I seriously had a heart attack.

  • Enough with the @novella1186 bashing.  Everyone does stupid things at 17.  It makes me sad when these forums turn nasty.  We're supposed to be a community of people who support each other.

Nobody is "bashing" or being nasty.

I don't really give a fuck what anyone did when they were 17, but it was fucked up, and thinking it is funny now is especially fucked up.

You have been here long enough to know that bullshit is not tolerated, and will be called out. And so has Novella. Stop taking offense at some imaginary "bashing" on behalf of someone else and move along.

You need to slow your roll here, honey. I've been nothing but supportive of Novella through all of her problems with her family and whatnot for months. I've offered kind words and advice to her many times. You obviously do not know what you're talking about.

Yes, we all do stupid things as teenagers. But she's still recounting the story years later as something funny. It's not.

I was in no way nasty to her. I called her out for something that I thought was not cool.

  • Debbie Downer alert: I really hate April Fool's Day. I never used to like it when I was younger and usually just got annoyed if someone tried to trick me with something that was so obviously a joke. Like how long do I have to stand here and laugh at your stupid prank that didn't work on me?

BUT I do get a huge kick out of people who do Facebook pranks... I've already seen two today. One is from a girl who posted a picture of a fake sonogram with the caption "2015 is going to be a great year!" and it's actually kind of sad because this girl just broke up with her boyfriend over the holidays and was constantly posting statuses about being 30 and single...

... and then the other post came from a couple I know from college who could probably be getting engaged anytime now. They changed their relationship status on Facebook to "engaged" this morning AS A JOKE. what the actual fuck. One of their aunts commented like yes! finally! so happy! let's celebrate! And then the couple had to reply that it was just a prank.

I'm hoping there's more on my Facebook feed today and I'll be watching everyone get duped from behind my computer screen like:

  • I fucking hate the fake pregnancy thing.  Too many people struggle with getting or staying pregnant, plus it's really unoriginal. I would stop talking to anyone who did that, full stop.

My friend told her mom that she was pregnant when she was in high school for april fool's. But 1) we were in high school and 2) it was just a prank on her mom, not all the somewhat random people one typically has in a facebook feed.

That is horrible and super offensive to anyone wanting/trying to get pregnant and not, going through a loss, etc. I would defriend someone for doing that, and wish I could punch them in the neck.
exactly. Like I get she's trying to make a joke because "ah she's 30 and single there's NO WAY she could be pregnant! lol what a good prank!" but it just misses so hard. She sucks anyway, probably a good move to defriend.

  • what's the rubber band on the nozzle thing?  I'm trying to imagine a) how it is done and b) what it does?
  • I'm not much into pranks.

I pulled some stupid kid prank on my little brother one year and he cried. It wasn't a big deal but he was a sensitive kid and little things would upset him and make him cry. He cried, I felt like a dick because I was his big sister, and I didn't really do any pranks again.

Also I'm lazy. Pranks seem like a lot of work. In high school we used to go TP our drama teacher's house the night before our opening nigh of a play. We'd TP his house, he'd laugh and then go make us all breakfast while we cleaned up the TP. It was fun but it was a lot of work.
  • I really don't get too into pranks, because I think that they are mostly mean-spirited. And also, laziness.
  • My ex thought it would be "funny" to pretend break up with me on April Fool's Day.  He was so serious and it didn't register what day it was, and I started crying and was super upset.

Dumped his ass not long at that (for many reasons).
