Fake ring for travel?

Has anyone bought themselves a cheaper, fake ring for when they're traveling? I'm going to Mexico at the end of this month and while I do not expect it to be dangerous at all, I have been reading that I should not bring valuables/flash expensive jewelry.

I am happy to leave my e-ring at home, but I have gotten pretty accustomed to wearing it, and feel naked without it on. So I want to wear something! Plus, my friends are going to take me out for a bachelorette night, so I feel like it might feel weird to be out at a wedding-related event without an e-ring. (I know this is silly, not all cultures even use them, etc., but that's where my brain went).

Because I suck at girling, I have no idea where one can buy a decent "fake" ring that is A. inexpensive, B. won't turn my finger green, and C. has some kind of stone on it (just because I want it to).

Any suggestions on where to look/stories about how/whether you got your own travel ring?

I got a nice infinity ring with fake diamonds in Groupon last month. I plan on taking that to Jamaica because I can't imagine taking my ring somewhere where I'll be on a beach and hotel. It only cost me like $30, haven't really worn it in place yet so not sure if I'll turn green or not.

IF you do turn green, paint hte inside with clear nail polish and you won't turn green anymore.

It's never crossed my mind.

Personally, I'd be more concerned about bringing expensive jewelry and leaving it in your hotel room or something. That seems more risky to me than wearing a ring.

Berricle.com has some nice stand ins, but they are sterling and CZ. I've gotten mine from QVC because they are either 14k gold or platinum coated sterling silver.

ETA: This is mine. I've only worn it a couple times, though.

I think it's a good idea in theory,but I won't be doing it. I would be more worried about someone breaking into my house while I was away and stealing it than wearing it on vacation/honeymoon (wedding for me ) and risk someone swiping it off my finger.

I agree--when FI and I were in Spain last summer I brought it with me for that very reason.

But this is a girls' trip--he'll be home watching the fort.

Here's the thing. If there's reason to not bring your real, expensive ring with you, you would be in just as much danger with a fake ring. Flashy jewelry CAN be a lure to muggers (just like hanging a camera around your neck marks you as a tourist, easy pickings), and they can't tell the ring is fake. They may see a big stone and still decide to pick your pocket, even if they leave the ring alone. Other, more dangerous places (like Rio right now), you might still get kidnapped. So if you need a ring on your finger for the feeling of it, just get a plain band.

I have a $5 sterling silver band I got in Chinatown that I wore when I didn't wear my e-ring. Now that I'm married, my wedding band is just a thin sterling silver band so I wear only that if I don't want to wear my e-ring. I also got a beautiful chanel-set ring (white topaz in sterling silver) at a craft show a few weeks ago for when I want something shiny and sparkly that isn't my e-ring.

Ah! Well that changes things. I thought you might be referring to your honeymoon for some reason. Then yea, I don't see a reason why you couldn't do that if it makes you feel safer and FI will be at home to guard everything

I don't know for travel, but FI bought me a costume ring to wear whenever mine goes in for cleanings or plating. I think he got it at Helzberg for around $100. I'll be wearing that the rest of this week since he's taking my ring in to get it all cleaned up for Saturday tomorrow or Thursday.

I definitely plan on doing this. I go away a lot, especially to beaches, and I'm always paranoid I may lose it in the sand, ocean, or even the hotel room. Also, in my mind, I have this idea that if I get mugged far away from home I'll have zero chance of getting it back. Even though rationally if I got mugged directly outside my home I'd also have a zero chance of getting it back. Totally irrational, I know. I guess when I'm in a place I know I feel like I have more control (even though in reality I don't).

I'm going to Florida next month and will be hitting the parks and the resort's pools as well as trails and possibly a beach or a lake. I'll be paranoid my ring or a diamond will loosen or fall off the ENTIRE time so I will have to just buy a cheapy fake ring. Now I

I wear my rings when traveling. I would be more concerned about break-ins at home then being mugged.

I'm sure there are some countries I wouldn't wear my e-ring, but i can't think of them right now.

Yep. I hate having it on at the beach/pool--for some reason I'm always terrified it'll slip off my finger while I'm swimming. (Despite all evidence to the contrary--it really doesn't go anywhere but I get paranoid anyway).

I thought of buying a fake one I saw at JCPenny recently. I'm going on a cruise to Mexico soon. I'm not worried about being mugged. I'm worried about it coming off in the ocean. My ring is slightly big for me when I'm cold. If I'm warm, my fingers aren't so small and it fits better. I don't know how is feel about leaving it behind on the ship, so I'm trying to decide what I'll do.

I had a plain platinum band that I had blessed during the ceremony of my first marriage. I wore it all of the time when I traveled. But, I then didn't really see the point. I wear my new bling all over the world and I'm bringing it with me next month to Mexico. I've never had a problem anywhere I've been and have only ever turned it into my palm when in Johannesburg.

I wore my diamond in Spain, and just turned it into my palm when the subway was really crowded. If I was going somewhere I'd be swimming a lot, I'd probably leave it either with someone I trusted (not my empty house) or a safe deposit box at the bank. When I travel to Brazil for work, I'll leave the e-ring home with H and just wear my band.

This is exactly why I think fake rings are pointless.

If you're worried about losing it (which I get, because even with insurance some people are sentimental that it's not the SAME ring you had originally) then I could understand it. But not because of theft or whatever because a sparkly fake ring is just as big an enticement to a real one. Pickpockets don't usually carry jeweller's loups to inspect your ring before they take your wallet.

This. I don't travel with expensive or very sentimental jewelry. One reason being that I've had jewelry stolen out of my suitcase when it was going through airport security. (There's an article on CNN today about how this is really common, and valuables also get stolen while travelers are going through the x-ray thing).

But I've also been to a lot of countries where it's not really safe/advisable to wear flashy jewelry. Not just for muggers and whatnot, but depending on where you are, it also makes you an easy target for really pushy street vendors. (At a market in China, I was physically grabbed and pulled into an alley and shoved against a wall while this vendor shoved stuff in my face and yelled at me. That's not the way to get me to buy your shit dude. I literally had to punch him in the chest and run. It fucking sucked).

For our honeymoon, I'm wearing an old silver band I've had for more than a decade that I love, but it's worth about $12. I'll survive if something happens to it. My ering and wedding band will be tucked away somewhere safe at my parents' house since they'll be home and have an alarm system and whatnot so I feel like it will be safer there than at our house.

I'm not expecting much danger or risk in Italy, but for lots of reason I just don't like to travel with important things.

That's interesting. It hadn't occured to me to leave my e-ring at home on the honeymoon, but I guess that makes sense.

Most hotels have security deposit boxes at the front desk which have a good amount of insurance attached to them (which the safes in the hotel room do not). When I went on my HM and we hit the beach, I left it with them.

hkb you should have no problems at the parks or resort pools. If you think your stones are loose, they would fall out regardless of where you are. I'd just get it checked out by your jewler before your trip

I worked on boats in the islands for 15 years. The boats ran from resorts. We have very few rings lost. Even at the resort with 200+ rooms didn't we have a lost ring once a month.

Now on the rare occasion we did have a lost ring 80% of those were newlywed men. More often then not their rings are NOT sized correctly. Also they are not use to wearing rings so they more often play with them since it's so new.

While working on the boat I had a chance to wear a lot of nice rings. Lots of women asked me/us to hold and even wear their rings while they snorkeled. This one woman had a 9 caret ring. She snorkeled with us a few times a year for years. I always wore her ring. I had to switch hands because that sucker weighed a lot.

I recently got it checked out/cleaned/etc and everything was fine, luckily. It's more a "oh my god what if I'm on a roller coaster and it slips off my hand??" even though there is virtually NO CHANCE of that ever happening

Especially since I'm sure the heat will make my fingers slightly swell! I admit I'm weird about it but you all are helping me feel a bit better.

We've decided on Jamaica for our honeymoon and will be on the beach most of the day, so for that I'll just leave it home and buy a fake ring. If I accidentally misplace it it will be no loss.

Holy moly! I bet it did weigh a ton. I can't even imagine wearing something that big on a regular basis. I would bang it everywhere. I'm such a clutz. Also, I have child-size hands.

Yes, I can guarantee you your fingers will swell a bit, as he temps are already going into the 90s here with killer humidity. I'm going to Magic Kingdom after work today (yay!) and have gone to many parks after work and have no problems on the rides.

One of my friends frequents them with me and she has a 3 carat on her tiny 3.5 size finger. No problems at all
