Fake ring for travel?

Here's the thing. If there's reason to not bring your real, expensive ring with you, you would be in just as much danger with a fake ring. Flashy jewelry CAN be a lure to muggers (just like hanging a camera around your neck marks you as a tourist, easy pickings), and they can't tell the ring is fake. They may see a big stone and still decide to pick your pocket, even if they leave the ring alone. Other, more dangerous places (like Rio right now), you might still get kidnapped. So if you need a ring on your finger for the feeling of it, just get a plain band.

This is exactly why I think fake rings are pointless.

If you're worried about losing it (which I get, because even with insurance some people are sentimental that it's not the SAME ring you had originally) then I could understand it. But not because of theft or whatever because a sparkly fake ring is just as big an enticement to a real one. Pickpockets don't usually carry jeweller's loups to inspect your ring before they take your wallet.
Loss is definitely the more realistic worry. We'll likely spend most of our time at the resort/pool/beach. The articles about safety and theft were what spurred me to start thinking about the possibility of a fake ring, but if I'm honest, it's much more likely that I'd lose it than have it stolen.

Lots to think about here! I do agree with PPs that it seems like a plain band is the way to go, since it will serve the dual purpose of attracting less attention and being less of a pain in the butt if I do anything active.

  • I personally do not take any expensive jewelry with me when I travel. I buy a bunch of stuff from H&M, or Forever 21 for fun funky stuff. I have not had to wear my e-ring on a trip yet, but I don't think I will take any of our rings on the honeymoon, I'll probably leave them in a safe deposit box or something.

I would suggest maybe getting a cute ring from H&M or something so that you will have a ring on your finger that is inexpensive.

I worked on boats in the islands for 15 years.   The boats ran from resorts.   We have very few rings lost.   Even at the resort with 200+ rooms didn't we have a lost ring once a  month.

Now on the rare occasion we did have a lost ring 80% of those were newlywed men.   More often then not their rings are NOT sized correctly.  Also they are not use to wearing rings so they more often play with them since it's so new.

While working on the boat I had a chance to wear a lot of nice rings.   Lots of women asked me/us to hold and even wear their rings while they snorkeled.    This one woman had a 9 caret ring.  She snorkeled with us a few times a year for years.  I always wore her ring.  I had to switch hands because that sucker weighed a lot.
Holy moly! I bet it did weigh a ton. I can't even imagine wearing something that big on a regular basis. I would bang it everywhere. I'm such a clutz. Also, I have child-size hands.
I have tiny hands too, and a jeweler had me try on a 10 carat diamond. I made a comment that the band on it was pretty, so they handed me the ring and said, "try it on, we can make the same band with a much smaller diamond." It looked so stupid on me. Like a Ring Pop or the big fake gems in the Pretty Pretty Princess board game.

I think FI was relieved that I couldn't stand the look of such a big stone lol. But the jeweler looked at me like I was crazy.

She was a woman of stature.  Carried it very well.

She was a ton of fun too.  Partied with her many times.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

HA that's exactly how I feel about large diamonds. They look great on some people but ridiculous on me.

Random: I really love Pretty Pretty Princess board game.

What does your wedding band look like?  You could start collecting versions of that, or something completely different.

I have a plain white gold band that just about matches FI's, an infinity eternity ring which is close to the design I actually wanted for my wedding band, and a pair of eternity channel set cz rings for either side of my e-ring that I got at Macy's in the costume jewelry department.

Except for the plain alternate that matches FI's, I don't really even have a reason to have extras except that I like them!

My "collection"... My actual wedding band is at the bottom:image

  • I got engaged on a beach in Mexico, near Playa del Carmen. Shockingly, I still have my ring and my finger :) You'll be alright to wear it. I wore it around town and had no problems.

I haven't picked out a wedding band yet (e-ring didn't come as a set) but I imagine I'll keep it pretty simple. Either plain silver/platinum or something kind of like @sarahufl 's (I think? You're the one with the pretty, super-thin band with diamonds, right?).

I guess I might have some shopping to do. :)

I know, I know--I feel like a dumbass for even worrying about it. Somehow I doubt the resorts of Puerto Vallarta are teeming with thieves and kidnappers. But the official tourism board of Mexico was the one who brought it up, so I figured I should at least look into it/get the Knottie dish.

Yep, that's me! And I love it. Got it in the diamond district for wholesale prices. Let's meet up one day and shop!

  • A lady I work with has a fake ring that she wears for work (we work in a gear shop). Its just simple and silver.

You should check out Pandora, they have good rings that wouldn't turn your finger green, have gems, and some are pretty cheap.

I don't think you have Kohl's in the city, but watch out for rings on card backings, especially theirs - - removing one is how I ended up with the stitches in my finger!!

  • On a related note, everyone was telling me I would sauter (no idea how to spell that) my wedding band to my engagement ring. Nope! I love having them separate. My band is plain and pretty thin, so when I don't feel like wearing my engagement ring, just wearing a band is totally fine.

Also, I travel a lot and have never had concerns about wearing my e-ring. If I had any concerns about wearing jewelry, I'd be more likely to go completely without than put a placeholder on my ring finger. This may be a controversial way to phrase it, but I don't feel like my ring is a security blanket. A bare hand is no big deal to me.

  • I think you'll be fine, but if you want something for travel, I'd just get a sterling silver or gold band. Have it be your activity/travel ring.

Whenever DH and I travel off the beaten path or to areas labeled as "dangerous" or whatever, I leave my e-ring at home and just wear my wedding band. My wedding band is still pave diamonds most of the way around, so I've considered getting an activity ring that I don't care as much about.

  • I have never understood this line of thinking.  As was previously stated a fake ring is not going to stop you from getting mugged because the mugger is not going to know that it is fake.

And where exactly in Mexico are you going to go?  I am guessing you will be in resort areas, and those areas are typically the safest because they are tourist attractions.  Now if you are going off the typical tourist areas then just don't wear your rings.  Yes, you may feel 'naked' at first but you will get used to it not being on.

  • Mine is a silver band with tiny "diamonds" from a little shop called Metalsmiths.  It cost about $80.  I only wear it if we're doing a lot of ocean stuff/diving/rock climbing, etc., or if we're going to dodgy countries like when we were in Egypt.  I've worn my rings to the US, Mexico, Europe before.

  • I bought a narrow Swarovski crystal band to layer with my wedding band and engagement ring. It has lots of sparkle and it's a bargain at $69. There are some fancier bands and solitaires, too.

    http://www.swarovski.com/Web_US/en/5139659/product/Curly_Ring.html

My mom bought a Diamonique wedding set from QVC to wear when her fingers swell. They're beautiful.

  • Sorry if this thread has already run its course, but just another vote for choosing to go super simple and keep the real things in a safe at home, especially if your fiance will be there.

My Brazilian classmates told me that women hide pretty much all the jewlery they're wearing under layers of clothing until they are in a safe place where they know they can take it out.

My boss had her father's watch instantanteously cut off her wrist by some slick guys riding by on a bicycle in Argentina while standing next to the car as her husband was pulling out bags.

I hate giving this advice, though, because it shouldn't be this way. It's like telling your friends at a bar to watch their drinks.

There is a HUGE difference between most South American towns and Mexican resorts. There are some parts of South America, if you have long hair, you shouldn't wear it down or in a ponytail. They'll cut it off and sell it on the black market. Vast difference in crime possibilities. I've been to Mexico/Carribean plenty of times. You mainly have to watch out for weed that's actually spices and/or ditchweed, people that try to take your money/swindling or pickpockets (if you're out of your resort.)

You're fairly safe in Mexico if you stick to the touristy places, actually.
