Re: You guys... (useless thread)

  • I don't have kids yet, but when I do, I will shamelessly dress them in all sorts of funny outfits. They will have a cute knitted cap for every season and holiday. I won't do it for the sake of photos, though - just for my own amusement. At least until they are old enough to object.

Same goes for kid leashes. I know most people find them despicable, but until my hypothetical kid is old enough not to run away, I'm getting one of those animal-shaped backpacks where the tale is a tether. I think it's funny, but I have a twisted sense of humor.

I have no problem with kid leashes.  I had one.  I was a runner.  I don't blame my parents for getting me one.  I was exhausting as a toddler.

I have zero problem with these.

I was a wanderer as a kid. And I was quiet. So basically my parents are still amazed I wasn't kidnapped or didn't walk off a cliff or something. If I have a kid I will gleefully strap one of them on them.

Plus there's a little pocked them. For like toys and snacks. I mean technically for the kid but you could totally slip some stuff in there for you too.

On dogs and kids:  babies/children with dog pictures are always adorable. Until they are not. I get super freaked out when I see pictures of toddlers lying next to or on top of a dog. It can happen so quickly that a child gets bitten by a dog, even a sweet, loving family pet. Look at this story of a family golden retriever, who was, without mom realizing it, having ear pain. He snapped and tore up their toddler's face. As the woman who wrote the post notes, it was not the dogs fault, it was ultimately hers.

I'm not saying don't ever have dogs and children, but I agree with others that a puppy and a baby are not a great plan. It's not realistic to say, don't have a dog and kids at the same time, but do at least "child-proof" your dog and try your very best never to leave small children unattended with the dog. Children ages 5-9 are actually the most at risk, so it's actually a lot of years to commitment to careful monitoring for both the child's and dog's sakes to have both at the same time.

I can tell you from recent experience that even our 12 month old foundling dog needs an incredible amount of care as she learns to housebreak and seeks attention. She has met our neighbor's kids and is fine interacting with them on her leash, but I would not trust her lose in a house with young children right now. She is still learning how hard humans can be played with without hurting them.
To the bolded: very true, and it also goes the other way: "dog-proof" your children, people! Too many times I see toddlers or young children being too rough, or just generally annoying a dog (and you can tell because its trying to pull its face away, etc) and the parents just do nothing because they think it's "cute" and that dogs are invincible. It drives me nuts.
Yeah this is very true. Kids need to learn to ask if they can pet a dog they don't know. My mom's German Shepherds are great with kids, but most people ask if they can pet first. I think it's a good rule for any dog.
All good points. I agree kids need to be taught how to interact properly with animals and I do think that kids being rough (not even intentionally) with dogs is a big cause of biting. We have friends who have a 6 and 8 year old and they have no pets. The parents are clueless and I've seen the kids harass a friend's dog by just never leaving it alone, always trying to get it to play, etc., to the point where I finally stepped in myself and said no more kind of forcefully because the mom is a spineless jellyfish and the dad was off getting drunk. They weren't trying to hurt the dog, they just didn't understand that the dog was done playing. Our older dog turns tail and runs away from them because he's smart :)

Unfortunately very young kids, like kids under 4, are not likely to be able to fully understand and act with the sufficient discretion, which is why I would suggest working with a dog prior to actually having kids in the house full time.
That's why you, as the parent, don't ever let your child be unsupervised with your pets.

If a 4 year old doesn't gave the mental capacity to fully understand how to properly interact and read animal body language enough to be trusted not to hurt the dog, you can't put all the responsibility on the dog either. It's just a dog. It can't fully understand certain things either, no matter how much training you put into it.

Now to be clear, I'm not implying dogs are stupid. What I'm saying is that as the adult and the species of higher cognitive ability, it's the parents responsibility to train their children how to behave around and treat animals, and never to leave young kids alone with the dog.

I'm planning on using leashes as well. I wandered off all the time as a kid

H jokes that we'll be grocery shopping, he'll look at something on the shelf and then he'll see down the aisle our child being dragged along because I wandered off again.

  • as a die hard harry potter fan I find this incredibly adorable and I guess I will have to repeat the mantra because its way too cute and nerdy and harry potter related!

  • Confession: I sometimes (read: almost always) change Bean's outfits 2x/day just so I can get pics of her in all the cute clothes before she outgrows them.

And I totally had the cheesy " newborn" shots done of her ( see siggy) with hats & fuzzy shit.

I'm totally wishing I had newborn photos taken for Tadpole.

As a Harry Potter fan, I should also repeat that mantra because taking pictures of my little one is so much fun.

  • I am really really glad I'm not the only one considering leashing future chillens. I wasn't one to run off, but I got lost enough times because of sparkly or cool things that I stopped to look at without my mom noticing. And... my sister tried to use a Home Depot display toilet once. I'm not sure how close to successful she was. While it's a great story to tell NOW, I don't want to be that parent going "NO! THAT ISN'T A REAL POTTY HONEY COME HERE!" or any of that.

  • I wanted to create a child leash-tazer combo. . . for when they are really and truly acting up. ;-)

Thanks ladies! I didn't make a new post rather just snuck it in a few places. Charlotte Harper - 3 weeks old today (and I've officially hit my sleep deprivation limit). good thing she's extra cute & relatively easy going (as far as newborns go) cuz it makes the otherwise crazy & hard motherhood gig a bit more tolerable ;) We love her to bits!

Yesss. What is it about that baby head smell? Why hasn't Yankee done something about this?

SERIOUSLY it's intoxicating. I'm glad you understand. People look at me like I'm crazy when I start smelling their baby's head.

Girl yasss. I always thought I was creepy or something, but recently I've watched other people do it. Like when someone brings their baby around, I see them smell the baby's head. And I'm like "omg, you too?!" It's like an unspoken thing.
