Container Garden Question

The kids picked out these big plastic colored urns to plant some stuff in- carrots, lettuce, sweet potatoes.  Last night DH started to worry that maybe it wouldn't be safe to eat the food we grow in these things.

So, does anyone know?

Re: Container Garden Question

  • you'll probably be fine.
we've done that for the past 4-5 years, and to my knowledge we've never gotten sick.
  • If it has a recyclable number on the bottom, it's fine.  #2 will start break down after 3-4 years and start to leach plastic into the soil, but anything else is okay.

Thanks!  I thought it would be fine, but DH started reading and started to worry.  The number thing will sway him one way or another.  I'd be fine planting flowers, but really want to have a salad in a bucket!
  • Plastic sucks!!! It can leach if it gets hot (probably will in the sun). Get Terra Cotta or some sort of ceramic.

Same reason you're not supposed to drink from water bottles you've left in a hot car.
  • I'm just thinking "How the heck will you get sweet potatoes and carrots to grow in something that size" (unless they're the super gigantic planters) ... but IMO, NBD, enjoy your garden!  It's about teaching kids where food comes from...  Lots of people container garden in apartment complexes and cities, go for it without worrying!  (we change out the soil each year on ours, spreading the old soil out in the yard or in the actual garden in low spots...)
