Spinoff: What's in your carry-on?

The plane ticket thread, coupled with the fact that I'm in the middle of packing for our trip next week, just made me wonder: What things do you always need in your carry-on?

For me, it's a good book, my iPod and giant DJ headphones (so people can see that they shouldn't try to talk to me. I'm anti-social), red licorice (no idea why; this goes back to when I was a kid), pain killers (just in case), and my neck pillow if it's an international flight.

I usually have a bunch of other random stuff too; sudoku puzzles, a magazine, other random snacks, etc. But those are my must-haves. What do you bring?

Re: Spinoff: What's in your carry-on?

  • I don't entirely trust the airline to get my luggage there with me, so just about everything I can possibly fit in my carry-on is in there.

As far as travel necessities: bottle of water, a snack, lip balm, earplugs, head phones, tylenol, kindle, antibacterial wipes (yes, I'm that passenger who wipes down everything), hand lotion and tissues.

  • We either fly Delta or Southwest and we get free bags on both (we have Delta credit card). Unless it's a really long flight or a weekend trip where my carryon = my luggage, I just carry a big purse with:

    - My wallet/passport
    - iPad
    - gum
    - chapstick
    - water
    - a snack
    - coat/sweater/layering stuff
    - kleenex
    - sanitizing wipes

ooh thank you for reminding me to get some of those! (Cuz yes, I'm that passenger too!)

  • Eyeshade, neck pillow, at least 2 books, iPad, phone charger, trashy magazines purchased in the terminal, wallet, phone, passport, and my toiletry kit, which will have all my prescriptions/Advil in it as well as the plastic bag full of liquids (I will do everything in my power not to have to check a bag, ha).

I might put a snack or two in there for a long flight. If I'm going somewhere international or I HAD to check a bag, I pack underwear and probably whatever outfit I imagine needing straight off the plane (usually a bathing suit). This plan served me well when I got to Ibiza and they'd lost my luggage. I had a suit and an extra skirt in the bag. I did, however, forget extra underwear. I'm wearing the 1-euro "I <3 Ibiza" undies I bought right now!

  • Depends on how long my flight is, but for my typical trips to Florida I have my nook, chargers, headphones, BC pills, excedrin, tums, wallet, phone, and a hoodie.

  • Love threads like this! For me:

Laptop/charger/headphones with a season of Friends on DVD (after a 16 hour flight from HELL I will never travel on a flight/train/bus longer than 2 hours without this)
    Bottle of water
    Book or 2
Glasses and contact case, with contact solution
    Phone and charger
    Oil blotting sheets (my savior!)
    Hand lotion
Zip-up sweater that I can easily put on and take off if I get too hot/cold
    Makeup bag
    Gum
Neck pillow if it's a really long flight

  • I've had my luggage lost more than once so now I am a bit more aware of my carryon packing.

    I always include
    -a pair of undies,
    -socks
    -fresh shirt
    -toothbrush/paste
    -travel size deoderant
-all prescriptions (+ tylenol, imodium, etc)
-hairbrush/comb and an elastic or two
    -lip balm
    -e-reader/headphones
    -gum

  • When I'm traveling for work, I have my work bag with my laptop and all my work nonsense (business cards, pens, papers, etc.) I also carry a book or my kindle, snacks, water, and then all the normal stuff that's in my purse. I usually like to bring a sweater too because I'm always cold on the plane.

We're doing carry-ons instead of checked bags this time around. We'll only be in Italy for 10 days and I've become a lot better about packing light than I used to be.

When I flew to Spain, they lost my suitcase. I knew I should have back-up stuff in my carry-on bag but I still failed to do this. I had to spend about $80 on stuff like contact solution, a contact case, a tooth brush, shampoo, and so on.

On top of that, I had worn sweatpants on the plane and it was like 110 degrees in Spain. I was so miserable that my friend tried to cut the legs off my sweatpants to make them into shorts for me. But the scissors that the guy in our hostel gave us sucked, so she ripped my pant legs off instead. I ended up with these shredded, un-even capri-shorts things that made me look like a shipwreck victim. And I had to walk around like that for 2 days till they finally got our suitcases to us. It sucked. I mean, it's hilarious when I think about it now, but I hated it at the time.

    Lesson learned.

  • If I'm using a carry-on solely for in-plane / emergency stuff:
    • Extra pair of underwear
    • Socks
    • Gloves if necessary (I almost never fly in the summer, so they are usually necessary)
    • Snacks
    • Books (at least two, often more)
    • Headphones
    • A blanket
    • Phone charger
I have packed for a week in winter NYC and a week in summer Hawaii entirely in my carry-on bags. I definitely prefer packing for summer trips if I'm not able to check a bag.

    Headphones
    Chargers
    Socks
    Underwear
    Scarf
    Toothbrush/toothpaste
    Extra hair ties
    Medication
    Eye shade
    Snacks
    Lip balm
    Pen
  • I haven't traveled internationally but I've been flying since I was five so I have it down.

    My carry ons are
Laptop case/satchel that stores my laptop, laptop charger, phone charger, headphones, my boarding tickets, and a couple of magazines.

    My large tote/purse has
    Water
    Two books
    Medicine
    Lip Balm
    Wallet
    Snacks
    Phone
    Cards
    Deodorant
    Tissues
And I'm sure there are other things but I can't think of any.
That's why my boarding tickets are in my laptop case and not in the deep apbyss known as my purse ha.

  • Spare charger(s) for whatever electronic(s) I have (usually phone + Kindle)
Book in case my Kindle dies anyway
    Earbuds
    Change of underwear
    Face cleansing cloths
Lotion and chapstick for dry airplane air
    Snacks
Scarf for covering my mouth and nose (blocks airborne germs)
    Hoodie
    Sunglasses

  • iPad, Kindle, all prescription meds, wallet, toiletry baggie, make up bag. In the future, if flying internationally, I will be packing a change of clothes. Last time I went to Berlin with my dad they lost his luggage for several days. We landed Late on Saturday...stores aren't open in Berlin on Sundays. My poor dad.

Sort of related but I didn't want to do a spinoff of a spinoff but does anyone have any neck pillow suggestions? I am looking for one that does not make my neck ache at the end of a 6 hour flight.

To stay on topic, I pack my Kindle and charger, magazines, mini face spray, lip balm, snacks and a large scarf that can also be used as a blanket.

  • FI and I are definitely considering carry-on only for our week-long honeymoon in Paris. I'm pretty tiny so my clothes don't take up much space,("they're like doll clothes! How do you fit in these things!!!" - FI) especially since I plan on living in skirts/dresses and tights.

If we can get most of our clothes and toiletries in one carry-on, then we will invest in a good suit bag for our second piece so FI can put his suit jackets and nice shirts in it and avoid checking luggage.

Bahaha FI was doing laundry the other day and pulled a pair of my jeans out of the dryer and said "Look at these! Elf pants!" He thinks my tiny clothes are so cute.

  • I never check anything if I can help it. I've had luggage lost twice, so, like others, bring EVERYTHING on board.

Chargers for everything, headphones, book, eye mask, tissues, chapstick, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, gum, cough drops, advil, a few bandaids (klutz over here), toothbrush & toothpaste, comb, water, tamari almonds, a granola bar, sunglasses, and something cozy to throw on if it's chilly.

If I'm checking luggage, all of the above, plus clothes for 24 hours and a mini toiletry kit.
  • Phone and charger
Laptop and charger (if I'm traveling with it)
    Book
    Deodorant
    Hairbrush
    Toothbrush and toothpaste
    Extra contact lenses
    Birth control
    Wallet
At least a day's worth of clothes, extra underwear on top of that, plus "specialty items" like a bikini or fancy dress

Clothes in the carry-on are a must for me.

Lot's of great advice, but I will add-Never, ever, ever put electronics or jewelry in checked bags.  Always in a carry on with me.
  • I almost never check bags either, but my "must haves" for carry-on are:

Face lotion - I usually put it on before I get on the plane, but just in case
Carbonated beverage of some sort - My throat usually gets super dry/irritated and for some reason carbonated beverages are the only thing that help me. It's probably all in my head, though.
    Chargers - Kindle and iPhone
    Kindle
Scarf/Hoodie - Always, always cold. Pile on the clothes.
    Chapstick
    Snacks
    Magazine
Game Boy Color + Game - Since I literally never play this bad boy anymore, I whip it out for longer flights for nostalgia
  • DH and I do a lot more driving than flying.   The last time I checked a bag was in 2003.   Since then I try to just pack creatively and I usually don't travel for more than a few days for work.   I will say that what I have at my fingertips and not in the overhead bin are:
    -laptop
    -phone and charger
    -wallet / keys
    -lip balm

  • Between not doing very long trips, and DH being willing to take advantage of laundry services provided by the hotel, we carry everything on carry-ons.

But assuming that I'm not shoving a weeks' worth of clothing into my bag, I carry:

    Wallet/keys

    Hairbrush

    Toothbrush/mini toothpaste.

Jewelry (I don't trust checking my jewelry)

    Antibacterial goo

Make-up (including bobby pins and hair ties)

    Phone and charger

    Burts Bees

    Various snacks

    Sweater/sweatshirt

    2 books

I've never carried extra clothes, and probably never will. If the airline loses my luggage then I get reimbursed by AmEx to replace stuff, which really just means free shopping. So PLEASE lose my luggage!

  • I try not to have checked bags.    So my carry-on tends to be pretty full.

    Must haves are:

glasses case with extra contacts inside

    toothbrush/toothpaste

    phone and charger

    Pashmina

    snack

    water (bought after security)

wallet, keys, passport or other id

    book and/or magazine

sometimes laptop.  Depends on the trip.

Since I don't check bags often i would automatically have extra clothes, makeup, etc.  If I check bags I tend not to add extra clothes or carry makeup. Unless it's a redeye.  Then I will carry extra clothes to change after the flight.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

My first ever time flying will be my honeymoon! So not exactly sure. A little sunscreen, some small toiletries and essentials for when we arrive, snacks?, a few books, chapstick, tablet loaded with movies and possibly a gameboy. IDK but I'm following this thread for tips.

  • This has really made me think of some items to add to my list.

Things I usually bring in carry on:
-at least 1 change of clothes, including underwear
    -my small makeup bag
    -any jewelry
    -electronics and chargers
    -headphones
    -toiletry bag
    -water

My purse is never without my wallet, hand sanitizer, chapstick, and snacks. Also, idc if it's the middle of summer, I always wear a jacket when I fly.
