Sun bleaching hair!

I live in the cold north, but I have experienced my hair bleaching to blonde twice. Once in Florida and once in LA.  Since I'm going to start a couple tanning sessions and I am going to aruba in a month for my honeymoon (yay!) I want to know what you girls living in the sun do to stop your hair from bleaching!

I plan on wearing a sunhat and sunscreen, of course! I was looking at hair sunscreens, but I wonder if it's just the same as skin sunscreen? Should I cover my hair in the tanning bed and put sunscreen in it? I want red hair for my wedding day!

What do you guys recommend?

  • My hair is as dark brown as you can get so I've never had that happen, but hopefully some others can help ya!! I would think non-clear shower cap in the tanning bed.

  • Are you laying down or standing up to tan? If you're laying down, you can usually just turn off the facial bulbs (for the whole time or after a few minutes) and sweep your hair up out the end of the bed. The back of your head will be on a pillow anyway, so most of your hair won't be exposed to the light.

If standing up, I always have my hair piled up in a topknot to keep it off my neck anyway, so only the outermost layer is exposed to the light. (I have really thick hair though - it's not getting through, like some people whose whole scalp gets sunburned through their hair.) I haven't experienced it lightening through just tanning.

You could always use your t-shirt to cover your hair in a little turban when you're in there.

Probably laying down. I need the least intense bed I can get. I didn't know they had separate face bulbs!

Yeah I worked at a tanning salon in-between high school and college. Most lay-down beds have a little panel of special face bulbs and there's a tiny switch inside where you can turn those off.

I think wrapping your hair in your t-shirt or a towel should keep it protected. I had a friend who tried the hair sunscreen and she said it worked for her. I've never personally tried it cuz I like when the sun bleaches my hair :)

  • I have dark hair. Although there is red on my dad's side.  Not my dad, but his brother was a big red head..    After years of working and living in the islands I had sun-bleached streaks.   I wore a hat on the boat and ends of my hair that stuck out the back were the most bleached out. Which leads me to believe hats really do work.

I've never used a tanning bed, but in your case I would use a dark hat and/or hair sunscreen to help.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I usually cover my hair with a towel when I'm in the tanning bed so it doesn't get bleached out. I always wear a hat on the beach. I haven't tried sunscreen for my hair but it sounds like it'd be a great idea.

  • My stylist told me to put a shitload of leave-in conditioner in my hair when I'm at the pool or the beach. I don't because I don't care if it gets sun bleached.

I think covering it with a t-shirt or towel in the tanning bed is the best option.

Ooh that is something I always do; my parents have a pool so I used to swim a lot, and I always put leave-in conditioner in my hair before I jumped in. I don't think it stopped my hair from getting bleached, but it dead help it from getting super super brittle and dried out from all the chlorine.

I did this once and it left a greasy film on the top of the pool water and it was hell for my dad to clean out. Not a good idea.

lol how much conditioner did you put in?!! I've never had that problem. I was the one in charge of cleaning the pool and balancing the chemicals since I was the only one who ever swam in it, and there was no greasy film. Sun tan oil, on the other hand, definitely will fuck up a pool.
