Okay, DD's school is crazy

So after my Thursday posts about the Teacher Appreciation madness, I thought some more and decided definitely no, not doing the cavalcade of presents, Teacher and Assistant each get a treat, a gift card, and a heartfelt note of thanks, period.  Then at the bus stop this morning, the other moms were also WTF at the 5 day thing.  One of them (who teaches middle school in our district) says it's nuts, it's only elementary that's doing a week-long gift list, and she's also doing a one-shot deal with her kid's teacher.  Okay, cool.

I check FB at lunch, and the teachers at DD's school are all dressed up and doing a red carpet walk down the main hallway.  Maybe it's the introvert in me, but my first thought was "If someone made me do this at my job, I would be so irritated."  It's not enough that they show up crazy early and teach a bunch of little kids, but now they have to get all glammed up like Phyllis Diller?  Ugh.

Maybe they enjoyed it, IDK.  Again, I love teachers.  DD's in particular is absolutely wonderful.  But this thing is already way out of control, and it's only Monday.  Who knows what they'll be doing by Friday.  And it seems to be the PTA inflicting it, the teachers don't seem to be driving it.  Maybe we have one of those crazy PTA presidents you hear about.  (I wouldn't know, not having been to any meetings.)

  • It totally sounds like the PTA has lost is ever-loving mind.  Someone got carried away with Pinterest.

Maybe it's because of the management change since last year, but our DCP/preK had signs up today ("teacher appreciation week/we love our teachers",) but has said nothing about gifts/daily events/etc. last year it was a BFD, this year, pretty much nothing.

  • Last year's teacher for DD I was ready to go overboard with the IKEA gift card (what she wanted) or other gift of the teacher's choosing, this year - the teacher has been so fantastic I'd love to say "the heck with it" at the end of the year...  In years past they've done the daily thing (bring a flower for the teacher, bring a candy treat, etc.), but I never saw anything like that for this year.  And given how over the top fantastic she's been as a teacher, even if I did, I can't say I would...  DS's DCP OTOH said they were doing the week but it was initiated by the DCP themselves for the teachers, nothing parents were even asked to chip in on - which I'm totally fine with!!!!

But Heffa - I'm totally with you on this one!!!

  • We haven't heard a single word about teacher appreciation.

Yes the school is crazy.  Then again I've found every teacher I know has some degree of "AWiness" about them.  I know who's a teacher before any other profession.

6let just packed a little baggie with Dove chocolates and he's got a note ready for Friday.  That's it.

    red carpet? no.

one of the parents planned a "granola bar" for the teachers a few years back. it just seemed like a table full of colon blow.

this year, it's a catered lunch. i appreciate that the parent organizing it mentioned that the general cost will be $10 per teacher so we can donate accordingly.

we also did a "flower a day" thing and it resulted in the teachers bringing home the most jacked-up looking bouquets ever.

Our teacher appreciation week is at the end of this month. It's actually 3 days and totally manageable.

    Day 1 is send a note/picture
Day 2 is send a flower
    Day 3 is send a dessert (?) (I think I'll go get a $5 -$10 Starbucks/DQ/Orangeleaf card)

The PTA at our school (I teach) put together fruit and muffins one morning and we were so grateful. We all appreciated that these parents took the time out to do this for us.

Red carpet? My wardrobe consists of clothes that get snot or puke on them almost daily!
