Ma'am has never ever been a thing in my world, but I don't mind being called that (when in a different country or by a telemarketer or whatever) as I know it's meant respectfully. I mean, I'm not a fan, and it always sounds strange to my ears, but I won't be offended.

  • So re: the guys/girls thing, I thought this was hilarious and kind of adorable.

I was in a work meeting a few months ago for a case team where I'm the only woman (male partner and 2 male associates). The partner is strategizing how we're going to distribute responsibility on the team and says "John, you're the contract guy, Joe, you're the drafting guy, and Charcoal you're the research......[long pause]....... lady?" I just laughed and said "I can be a guy too!"

I'm lucky to work in a VERY inclusive group at work. The legal field can be pretty sexist, and even some departments/partners at the firm can be, but the group I work in is very inclusive. I've never heard anyone refer to us as "girls."

I agree with a PPs sentiment, it's an inside/outside thing. I call my close friends "the girls" but I think I would be a little offended if a stranger or work colleague called me a "girl."

  • I say ma'am and sir all the time. I don't mind being called ma'am either and I like when DH does it.

  • Usually women, unless I'm talking about getting together with the girls. Never female. Not to refer to a specific woman or to a group of women. I find it really offensive. We have a word for a female of the species human. It is woman.

    YUP!

Whenever I hear someone refer to women as "females" I shudder automatically. And I always hear it in the voice of some misogynist neckbeard who can't understand why he can't seem to trick "females" into fucking him.

  • I'm 31 and all of the "girls" on my team are 25-34 and we all refer to each other as girls.  I definitely still identify as a girl.  When I talk about "ladies/women" at work I am usually referring to people 10-15+ older than me.  I usually say guys for guys of all ages but sometimes do refer to the guys on our team as boys (they are all 23-26).
I am curious what some of the younger 23-24 year olds refer to me as.  Being a manager, I bet there are some people that call me a lady/woman.  That feels weird to me!
I feel like gal is the equivalent of guy...but don't know anyone who really uses that term.
