Re: Dog DNA Tests - Update in thread

  • @KatWAG our dog is a Fred as well! Yours is pretty damn adorable.

H and I are pretty sure that our Fred is a yorkie with some mini schnauzer mixed in. He's got a really long face (hard to tell from the picture) and he's got a long body and long legs, but all the yorkie coloring and attitude. If I wasn't cheap, I'd test his DNA just out of curiosity.

This thread is lacking in puppy pictures. I expected more pictures of adorable doggies.

  • I'm super curious about this too... I want to know what our sweet girl is! The first shelter that had her said she was mostly Bernese, which she may be, but there's something else. The shelter we adopted her from said half Pyrenees half St Bernard. But there's gotta be something else too... she's just not that big. She was severely underweight at 66lbs when we adopted her, but even once she's healthy I don't see her hitting 100. And she's just not that tall. There's a Bernese and a St Bernard that go to our dog park and they dwarf our Molly girl.

  • charcoalandblush She's adorable! Maybe some Australian Shepherd in there?

The first shelter Monty was at thought he was a pit/lab mix. The second shelter said Plott Hound/lab mix. Now it seems like he may have all three. The more I look at breed identification online, the more it seems that identifying them from looks alone is nearly impossible. Though  in reality, all that matters is that you have a good dog!

I could definitely see that! That would account for her size (she's bigger than an Australian Shepherd, but smaller than the other three breeds we were given).

I am curious what Fred is. Our vet told us not to waste our money. Fred is Fred and it really doesnt matter what breed(s) he is.

Our best guess is some combo of Bichon fries/ Lhasa/ poodle.

I have two friends who have dogs that look pretty similar to that.  One is a shih tzu/poodle mix and the other is bichon frize/shih tzu/something else.  Maybe there's some shih tzu in there?

Take that with a grain of salt because I don't really know anything about small dogs.
  • Awww, I wish I had done this with my beloved Yorkie, who left for the rainbow bridge in June 2011. I say Yorkie, but I always suspected Australian silky terrier mix. I didn't know about DNA testing for dogs at the time.
My current fur baby is an ex racing Greyhound with pedigree and a lineage that can be traced to the middle ages, there is no mystery to her.
