Holy crap I think I found a new job

Long story short, I've been pretty miserable at my current job.  In December, I was asked by my bosses to move over to this other company they started up as a partnership with an outside company.  They wanted me to go over there to be their "eyes and ears".  Anyway, it went down the shitter real quick, I got moved to another location because some ex-coworkers were telling the powers that be that I was creating problems (which I wasn't, and nobody ever came to me to ask me about it, I heard about it from my new bosses). 

Since all that happened, my job has been very stressful, as I feel like I'm walking on glass around them all the time, and to be honest, the people that were hired at this new company are less than stellar.  I casually mentioned to someone I know at a company we used to do business with that I was looking around, and she mentioned it to her boss, and they interviewed me today and pretty much offered me a job on the spot. 

The new job is closer to home, is wayyy less stressful, and the company is a GREAT company to work for.  The only bummer is it's temp to hire for about 3 months, so no benefits til after that.  AND, it's way closer to home and stuff we like to do after work... no more hour plus commute through the middle of the city.  Yay!

Sorry for the long winded post, but there is a question here.  My question is, should I go ahead and just put in my resignation today?  Or wait til I've gotten through all the paperworky/background check stuff with the new job?  They want me to start June 1.


ETA: I'm asking because I've never had to formally resign from a job.  I've always worked at small companies and left jobs due to moving out of state... never actually left a job for another job.

    Congrats! Wait until you have signed everything.

    I have a friend who got a job offer and she was so excited that she quit her current job that same day, a few days later the new company rescinded her offer. It was awful.

  • Yes, I would wait until everything is all signed and official, you never know what could happen.

    You can go ahead and write your letter of resignation though.  :)

  • Do they know how long the background check with take?  General courtesy is to give two weeks notice - which would mean today.  It's not required and most states are at-will employment, but it's the general courtesy.  But I would be hesitant to submit it officially until the background check is clear in case there's the chance that something might come up that makes them rescind the offer (like in my work, they do a preliminary background check that takes a day or two and if that comes up clear, we can give them a formal offer in writing, but then there is a more thorough background check after that taking a couple of months where you can be fired if something comes up on that).

    Eesh yeah that would be awful!  Definitely don't want that. 

    Thanks everyone!  I'm pretty stoked.  It's less "secure" than my current just cause of the temp to hire thing, but to not have the stress level I've been dealing with, well, I think it's worth it.  I haven't even been wanting to do wedding stuff cause of the stress, and well, that shit's coming up soon!

    Not sure on the time frame of it.  And yeah, I'd feel a bit bad about not giving 2 full weeks, but I will be leaving them with my files completely ready to go, so it shouldn't be too bad.

  • I would ask the new hiring company if they would mind you starting 2 weeks after hard job offer is made, so you are able to give your current employer proper notice. It usually doesn't hurt to ask.  I've had to do that before and basically told them that I don't want to cause my current employer any unnecessary hardship by leaving with little notice, just as I'm sure they would appreciate proper notice from any of their outgoing employees.  When I've done it, they were very accepting and allowed that time.  If they really need you to start June 1, then current job just gets less notice.

    My current is a direct competitor to the new one.  Same line of business... so that won't be an issue :)  I did business with them at my previous job (the one that asked me to move companies)... which is related but not direct.  Sorry to be vague but I don't want to put too many details out there.

    I'm waiting to see how long it takes them to get the paperwork over.  If it's more than a day, then I'll tell them I'll have to push out my start date.  It also gets a bit tricky because I'm going on vacation June 15-22 (which I told them about during the interview and they are fine with it) so I'd like to be able to put in some decent time at the new place before vacation.

    Uh yeah I don't have a contract.  This place is not very well ran at all.  Someone else left recently to go to another company too with no problems, she just had to sign something when she left saying she wouldn't try to bring over any clients from here.

  • Case in point on how badly this place is run.... none of us can get into our cloud system this morning.  I called IT support and they said "yeah, your boss needs to call the billing department".  Basically, nobody paid the bill for our servers etc.  Great.   A few weeks ago the internet at our other location got shut off because the bill wasn't paid over there. 

    Still waiting on paperwork from the new (got an email this morning saying they're working on it) and eagerly anticipating writing that resignation letter!!!!!
