How much was your dress?

... and what did you do with it after?

Re: How much was your dress?

  • First wedding: over $4K (don't remember exact cost and mom paid for it) and sold it on eBay afterwards

Second wedding: $275! I had it custom made by a seamstress. After my first wedding, I didn't see the point in spending thousands on a dress again. It's sitting in my closet right now. I am thinking of having it dyed so I can wear it again, but I need to lose some steroid weight first :-/

  • Mine was originally $2200, but as it was discontinued and I bought it online I only paid $700. Buuuuut it needed a lot of alterations and structure added in to fit me properly. In the end my entire dress ended up costing about $1200.
  • My dress was $2800.

It was cleaned and now it's sitting in a plastic bag on the top of my closet.

my alterations cost me a whopping $40.  That was for a hem and bustle.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Wowser. I figured that I'd spend at least $150 on alterations. I'm not sure where I got that number, it just sounded reasonable. But the tailor ended up basically re-building the top of the dress from the inside-out.

Knowing what I know now, I'd probably have bought a different dress, but oh well! It worked out well enough.
  • All said and done with alterations and such, I think mine was around $1,600. It's hanging in the library right now. Not preserved or sold or diy'ed... I'm still undecided what to do with it.

Mine was $4400 and alterations were $750!  But I was supposed to gain weight so I went a size up and in the end I lost more weight meaning the dress was 2 sizes too big and it had quite a bit of beading/crystals.

ETA it's in my closet waiting to be cleaned and preserved.

My dress was $1700, but it had been discontinued, so the shop sold me the floor model for $1300 including cleaning AND alterations to take it from a 12 to a 6.  I couldn't believe i liked that dress the best even though i had tried on multiple dresses in the $3-4k range.  i lucked out.

To be fair, i then bought a crystal belt that was $800, and a $350 veil (that my mom insisted on and i only wore for the 20 minute ceremony).

The dress has been cleaned and preserved and is in a box in my guest room closet.

  • I wouldn't call my wedding "luxury" in general, but FWIW, my dress was $2200 and alterations were $700.  Kleinfeld alterations are a flat fee and I trusted them to do it well.

  • Mine was 2k from Nordstrom and alterations were 130.

JCbride2015, how did you like Klienfeld?
  • Mine was $5000. Fortunately the only alteration I will need is a hem. It's a bit more than I wanted to spend but it fits like a glove and I love it.  I suppose I will do my best to have it preserved/stored afterwards.  It's a shame to only get to wear it once - it's now the most expensive garment I own.
  • Mine was a little over 3K, but the belt was an extra $500.  Haven't decided on a veil yet.

The Maggie Sottero Juliette is about $1,800 everywhere I found it. That's the dress you got right (Dress Porn thread)? Why are you paying $3,000 for it?

  • @southernbelle0915  Yes, that is the one.

Everywhere you found it as in online?  I had never seen the dress before I tried it on.  I had called the shop ahead of time and requested a Pronovias gown that I was set on and the lady who assisted me brought out the Sottero. I almost didn't even try it on because I didn't think it would work on me.  It was the only dress without a price tag in my fitting room and I'm 100% sure the price she gave when we asked was not $1800.  This makes sense as the price of the Pronovias gown was also over the online price (I knew that one beforehand) and down the street at another shop the price of the Aire Barcelona dress I tried on was WAY over the online price.

I did not pay for the dress as it was a gift from my mother.  She worked out the price but I'm positive the dress itself was $2300 and she paid ahead of time for alterations and probably anything else they suggested because she was super excited.  I only know for sure that the belt was on top of that because I was sitting next to her when they brought it out and we all kind of gasped because we didn't expect it to be that much.  It's not the black one in the picture, but one that has bling all the way around. When I asked after how much it came out to she said 3K plus the belt.

Fancy shops overcharge and I know that and I have made her aware but she's not the type of person that would ever order a wedding gown online. She's pissed the bridesmaids are ordering online, but the difference between the shop price and the online price is almost $100 and I'm not doing that to them.

All that being said, her budget for my dress was 4-5K but I loved this dress.  After the fact I see it EVERYWHERE, but that's ok.  I love it.

What? This makes no sense. Designers set suggested retail prices, the suggested price is $1800.  This doesn't change when a salon is fancy or not.

First you say your dress was over 3k and now you are saying its $2300? Something is fishy here.

  • Lol, ok.

What exactly is your point? That I'm making up a wedding? That I'm a big lying liar? Ok.

You are wrong. There might be a suggested retail price, but shops charge whatever they want. I had never looked up the price of this dress because I had never seen it, but like I said, the 2 other dresses I tried on were a few hundred (one of them almost 5) over the price I had seen online. I only even saw those prices because I was looking the dresses up for sizing info.

Further, the dress my bridesmaids chose can be purchased for $160 at Madame Bridals online or $175 at bridesmaids.com. I have either visited or called at least 8 shops here and none will sell it for under $250.

I did not pay for the dress so I simply answered what I was told. I had no reason to look it up after it was already purchased. I still don't care or see why this is such a scandalous mystery. I love my dress and my mom had a great time spending whatever she did on it. Retail price or not. If I wanted to lie I would have researched a more expensive dress.

I'm other news, I'm not really engaged and I'm 14. And a squirrel.

Good because only a fool would pay double the asking prices.

I dont care how "luxury" of a wedding you are having, its still ridiculous.

I think the Heidi Elnora dress I bought was right around $4,000 in 2013.
  • Mine was $1250 plus tax, $75 for a beaded application and $600 for alterations.  But they took it in, hemmed it, put in cups and did a 12 button bustle, so I figured it would be a lot.  So, about $2000 total.  It's currently sitting in its dress bag in a closet.  One day I will wear it just for the hell of it to buy groceries or something cos I love it so much

  • I purchased mine at an Allure sample sale. It's the 9212. With alterations it was $2,000.

  • My dress is a Legends by Romona Keveza L317, and with the "day of" discount, it was about $3,600, marked at about $4,150 or so. The belt added a little, and that unfortunately didn't include alterations. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it after. I'm the sentimental type, so I don't see myself wanting to sell it.

  • NotTheOnlyOne was swindled for sure. No where - and we went to some pretty high end boutiques and they don't charge more than the retail price - they might just have dresses with higher price points. The shop no doubt saw her coming and knew they could overcharge.
  • Mine was 7,600 ish on its own. Its a Lazaro from the fall 2014 line.
  • $2800 Tara Keely by Lazaro from Bridals By Lori. I said yes to the dress on tv! lol. great experience with Monty and Lori
  • Mine was $2725 after taxes. Haven't bought any accessories yet (sash and veil).
Mine is Alvina Valenta 9307. Love it! Alterations will be 600 flat fee.
