I realized that I don't know the story of how any of you met your wonderful SOs. We've done proposal stories, wedding recaps, partner brags, but I don't think we've done a post about how everyone met. Was it love at first sight? A close friendship that turned into more? Did you dislike each other at first? Tell me your story!

My FI and I met at a party for a mutual friend in October 2010. I'd just gotten out of a 3-year relationship a few months prior, and I hadn't worked up the nerve yet to date or even socialize much. I remember he walked in, announced to the party that he was a pretty pretty princess (which was apparently an inside joke), and then started chatting with everyone. I remember thinking that he was a really cute gay guy.

A little later on I found he was not gay, and we flirted most of the night. Neither of us pursued it past that since I lived three hours away at the time. A few months later that mutual friend tried to set us up when I was back in town for a visit. The night did NOT go well. FI was aloof and rude the majority of the night, and I walked away annoyed as hell.

I guess the third time was the charm for us. A few weeks after that encounter in January 2011, he sent me a random Facebook message. I came very close to ignoring him but decided I had nothing to lose by responding. We couldn't stop talking. We'd text all day and stay up all night on the phone. In February we were finally able to coordinate our schedules for a real date, and we've been together ever since.

H and I met online through OkCupid. We chatted and emailed for a few weeks before I finally felt comfortable enough to give him my cell phone number and arrange a date. I think the first words out of my mouth were "i'm so glad you look like your picture" before blurting the story of my friend who went on an online date with a guy who stole a minor actor's photo for his profile picture. Probably not my best moment....but no worse than when we got engaged and I called him a jerk because I was in so much shock. Oops....

Our first real date was at PF Changs. I was super nervous and my hands and chopsticks were shaking like mad. I noticed his hands were shaking too and I thought to myself "Oh, he's just as nervous as I am" and felt WAY better. Awhile later I learned the shake is actually benign, he wasn't nervous at all. After dinner we tried to go to a movie but it was packed so I said forget. We drove to my favorite local coffee shop and ended up talking and hanging out for the next several hours. And I agreed to a second date at Six Flags the next day. After that it was pretty much history.

H and I met my first day of college in band. Both of us were single at the time, but within a couple of weeks to a month we were both in relationships (not with each other). Honestly, at first I found him kind of annoying but that had a lot to do with me studying for physics while in band. (I got an A in that class, but electromagnetism is permanently wound up with La Belle Helene in my mind.) Through much of this time, I was in relationships with other people, and he apparently had a crush on me but never worked up the nerve to say anything about it.

When I got back from a co-op, we reconnected through mutual friends and ended up dating about eight months later. This was three years after we met.

BF and I met on OK cupid as well! We didn't have to talk long before I realized he was different than the others I had been talking to. We met at Starbucks and had a coffee and only got to talk for about an hour before he had to leave. I remember thinking I was such a nerd because i wouldn't shut up about the new puzzle game I was obsessed with. But hey, he gave me another shot.

We had dinner a week later and talked for hours. I made other plans in case I wanted to bail and was super disappointed I did. I went home that weekend for a wedding and told my family that if I didn't marry the guy something was super wrong with me, haha! We became a couple about a month later.

H and I met on Match. I almost didn't go out with him because he "winked" at me at first (i.e., didn't write a message, just sent a "wink" which is Match's way to show he was interested). While I was looking at his profile and complaining to a girlfriend about, ahem, the laziness of winking she told me that was how her husband initiated contact and to wink back "because she wanted to go to an Indian wedding"...lol. So I did, he emailed me a thoughtful email, I emailed back, we talked and finally we met at a wine bar. I NEVER believed in love at first sight but I'll tell you something, I felt the oddest emotion ever when he walked in the door (and attraction I've felt before). It was almost as if the clock stopped just for a nanosecond and I felt "at home." Cheesy I know.

We talked for several hours and he kept blowing out the candles on our table (the waiter relighted them several times and he even stole some from empty tables when the waiter wasn't around to relight them) because he was gesturing so much when talking to me (he later told me he was doing everything enthusiastically so he could to convince me to go out with him again). He hailed me a taxi after our date and kissed me on the cheek and I was so bummed (and I never kiss on the first date). I told the cabbie my address, let my head fall back to hit the seat behind me and just prayed that he liked me. I then called my Mom and told her I met the man I was going to marry...true fact. Remember the whole thing like it was yesterday.

H & I went to college together - but we didn't know each other back then, despite having several mutual friends.

He moved up here for work in 2011, and the first people he met were people I was friends with. I was also on Match at the time, and saw him on there. I sent him a message saying "I hope this doesn't sound weird, but did you go to [alma mater]?" He said yes, and we friended each other on FB, where he sent me a message to ask me out, but I ignored it, because I immediately started dating someone else. Oops.

Over the course of several months, I saw him at a networking event (told the friend I was with "I went to college with that guy," but didn't approach him) and just missed going to a concert with him (it was supposed to be a whole big group thing, and it ended up being me as a third wheel with a friend & her boyfriend.)

My ex & I broke up the next February, and then FOR GOOD in June. That fall, H & I started exchanging FB messages about the Red Sox & Patriots. One Saturday in September, I was home alone, drinking wine, and I decided I was going to ask him to hang out. I wrote on his FB wall "I think we should have an Upstate reunion." He responded "Just the two of us? Works for me." He was in Michigan at the time - he flew home on Sunday, and we went out for the Pats game that afternoon.

This is usually when I say "the rest is history," but in reality, I had gone out on a date or two with another guy at this same time. He was totally just looking for a hookup, which I was not down with, and I remember asking friends (@swazzle) which one I should go out with - to which the overwhelming response was "THE NICE ONE." I actually had plans to go out with the other guy after my first date with H, but bailed on him because H asked me to hang out the same night.

Needless to say, I made the right choice

these online dating stories are so cute! i did a lot ridiculous amount of online dating and had so many terrible experiences but i kept going back for more because i know of so many couples that met online and fell in love. i kept saying "i know it can work!" but it never worked for me. oh well. at least i got tons of free dinners and plenty of funny (and tragic, awkward, and terrible) stories out of it! im glad it worked out for all of you though

anyways, sorry if this is super long but i love our story.......also i apologize in advance for how superficial and judgemental i am in this story.

BF and i met at a bar on june 26 of last year. my friend and i had planned to go see Billy Joel at Fenway Park that night but we wanted to get some drinks beforehand. she chose a random, divey bar i had never been to (for the Boston NEY ladies it was Arc, formerly An Tua Nua if you're familiar with the Fenway area). she and i hadnt seen each other in about 18 months, so we had a LOT to catch up on. so the drinks kept flowing and we kept talking, insisting we’d head over to the concert in “5 more minutes”. except before we knew it, the bar started filling up with people who had been at the concert and we realized we had missed the entire show. oops....

anyways BF happened to be one of the bartenders working that night and over the course of 5 hours at the bar we had chatted with him a little. i remember teasing him for being so young (hes 4 years younger than i am), but other than that he didnt really stand out to me. eventually my friend decided she had to head home, so i was getting ready to leave too when BF shouted over to me. he said he was finishing up work then and asked me to stay and have a drink with him. i decided (or maybe it was the 14 Bud Lights talking) that this was a good idea and texted my sister to say “I’m hanging out with a 23 year old Irish bartender tonight….remind me of this when I’m 45, married, and bored”.

BF and i spent the rest of the night drinking way too much and stumbling our way to a greasy burger joint at 2am for a classy “first date” of burgers and onion rings. we also got into our first fight as we somehow got lost on the 5 minute walk from the bar to the restaurant. i ended up going home with him that night (all we did was kiss, i swear!) and the next morning he told me to text him but since i wasnt interested, i didnt. the next night he texted me to ask how my day was and i politely told him i thought we should just be friends. over the next week i kept thinking about him and wanting to spend time with him but telling myself it wasnt worth pursuing someone that much younger than i am and who probably just liked to party and drink and sleep around (all assumptions i made based on him being from Ireland and being a bartender....*facepalm*).

but one night a week later i was out with a friend and drunk (do you see a theme here?) and i decided to text BF. he happened to be at a bar down the street from where i was, so his group joined up with my group. it was july 3 so after drinking more we watched the fireworks together and i remember thinking it was so romantic if only he was someone i was interested in dating (*facepalm* again). more drinking followed and later in the night he came back to my apartment for sexy time. then i decided to enjoy it for what it is and just have a summer fling. i spent the next 3 months dating other people (BF and i were not exclusive) and having a miserable time on all those dates and just wanting to be with BF. in september i finally decided to give in to what everyone around me could already see and we became "official". he unofficially moved in in october and officially moved in in march.

TL/DR: we met at a bar. i was judgey about his age and job so i ruled him out as a "real" possibility and i just kept him around for sex but finally realized i wanted to date him forrealz.

I met DH through Myspace. I was living in FL at the time and had decided to go to grad school in Phoenix. I didn't know anything about the city, so I went on Myspace because you could sort non-friends by age, city, gender, etc. I figured guys would be more likely to respond, so I looked for 30-40 year old guys in Scottsdale. I was 32 at the time and didn't want to live in a college-aged neighborhood.

When the results popped up, several of the profile pics were either weird, or I couldn't tell what was going on in them. DH's was on the second line, maybe 3rd or 4th from the left. It was a pic of him from the shoulders up, just looking at the camera and smiling. While I did think he was cute, I didn't know if he was married/dating someone, as I was only interested in asking a few questions.

I emailed him my situation and the next day got an email back that he hadn't checked that email box in over four months. Something in the back of my mind went PING! We started chatting on email daily, then multiple times a day, then he asked if he could call me. We'd talk once a week, then daily, then constantly. By the time he flew out to see me 2.5 months later (he asked if he could come to FL, I said no, then a week later changed my mind), I was done. From the minute he got off the plane, that was it... for both of us. He came back to FL two more times, and we drove to AZ together less than 4 weeks after we started dating. If we could make it through that, we can make it through anything!

On June 19, it will be 7 years since he stepped off that plane.

ETA: Also, because I'm a giant dork, I just figured out that on 12/29/15, we will have been married for longer than we were dating/engaged.

@minskat30 "because she wanted to go to an Indian wedding" This made me smile from ear to ear. That's so funny that she inadvertently predicted the future. I think I know that moment you're referencing... when I first saw FI (before he announced he was a pretty pretty princess), I remember thinking, "That guy is really cute. I wonder if I'm about to meet my husband." It's really eerie because I was not someone who would normally jump to that kind of conclusion.

@GoldenPenguin Obviously you guys were meant to be together since the universe kept throwing you together. You definitely made the right choice!

@jenjen047 LOL I know dem feels about dating a younger guy. FI is 6 months younger than me, which I know isn't a big deal, but I'd always dated guys who were 2-3 years older than me. I never dated anyone my own age, and especially not younger than me. Funny how breaking out of your comfort zone can be so rewarding.

@cu97tiger What a great story! I love that you were just reaching out to him to get the lay of the land, but it turned into so much more. Just goes to show that you never know what the smallest encounters may lead to.

@eilis1228 - Isn't it? She ended up being one of my bridesmaids and the first time she met H (when we were dating) she took all the credit for us meeting in the first place...rightfully so.

H was the only guy on Match I went out on a second date with and I went out on a lot of first dates on Match. It was that feeling...like everything stood still. H didn't feel it until the second date but said he had a similar experience then. I'm more perceptive than him anyway so I don't begrudge him the fact that it took him a teensy bit longer.

H had that feeling before I did. I was coming out of a very rough relationship and was honestly kind of relieved to be with a good partner, so I wasn't dead sure on the forever thing right away. He had it before we really started dating if that makes sense.

BF and I met the first day of college. A girl on my floor was talking about some cute guy she met who lived on the floor below us. I said we should invite him to whatever it was we were doing that night. When we knocked on the guy's door BF thought we were knocking on his door and came out so we invited him and his roommate along too. We've been pretty much inseparable since then and were officially dating about a month after that.

OKCupid. The stupid robot told me to message him, and I was skeptical, because the stupid OKCupid robot is often wrong. But he seemed to have a lot in common with me, and he did not look horrible in his photos, so I messaged him. We exchanged messages for a few days before meeting up for our first date.

We almost didn't go out again, not because we hadn't had a nice time on the first date, but because Thanksgiving happened. We'd made plans to go on a second date the day before Thanksgiving (a week after our first date), but he had to reschedule. Except ... neither of us actually rescheduled.

I finally reached out the Sunday after Thanksgiving and asked if he wanted to get dinner the next night. I was actually expecting him to decline or not respond because I'd dated around enough to know that often, guys will just pull the "cancel and reschedule" thing and never reschedule instead of just saying, "Sorry, I'm not interested." But he had just assumed we had plans and had forgotten to confirm them with me.

The second date really confirmed everything for both of us. I knew he was definitely interested because even though he'd been feeling sick in the restaurant, he suggested we take a walk to see if his stomach would calm down a bit because he didn't want the date to end. We ended up having our first kiss at the end of the night (it was actually kind of romantic; we were in the middle of Coolidge Corner in Brookline, and it was a nice starry night).

Our meeting was not very romantic. I was 19 and he was 21 and we met while we were both visiting friends at college. He was actually there visiting the twin brother "B" of my friend "W". We both grew up in the same town, went to the same high school (2 years apart) and knew a lot of the same people but never met until travelling 2 hours away from home to end up visiting twin brothers!

Me and my friend that I traveled there with were only planning on spending 1 night visiting. I actually saw FI that night and talked to him very briefly and thought he was really cute. Me and my friend ended up deciding to spend the next night too. That night there was a big party at an on campus apartment. I kept telling telling B that I thought his friend was cute and I wanted to make out with him lol. I guess he thought I was cute too- we ended up making out in the bathroom by the end of the night and I went back to the dorms and spent the night with him- we didn't have sex though. We had exchanged numbers the night before and about 3 days later I was too impatient so I texted him. We hung out and it turned in to a FWB type relationship for almost a year! I really liked him and wanted more but didn't have the balls to say what I really wanted for the longest time. Even his friends were calling me his girl- it was like he wanted to be in a real relationship but maybe was scared. When I finally did say something it didn't go the way I'd hoped right away. But a couple days later he called me to hang out and ended up pretty much asking me to be his gf.

And now more than 9 years later we're about to get married and he still takes his sweet ass time do to everything

It's a long story. It started when I worked at a local fast food restaurant. I believe it was a couple of weeks after I started working there that I met him. One night, about thirty minutes before closing he walks in. I remember thinking to myself that he was cute. Apparently he knew the manager and I didn't learn until later that he had worked there a couple of years before me. I was pretty shy but found him easy to talk to. According to the manager, he kept asking when i worked next and would show and keep me company while I closed down the dining room. One night, after a couple of months of flirting, the manager told him to stop flirting with me while I was on the clock and ask me out already. So he did. And now, four years later, we are planning on getting married!

I met DH through one of my sorority sisters who is "Miss match maker". She has always tried to hook me up with one of her friends and normally it never worked out. She actually grew up with DH and knew him very well. At the time, I had just gotten out of a very bad relationship that lasted way longer than it should have and took a toll on me. I was not in the mood for dating or another relationship for a while.

One weekend my sorority sister told me about DH and said that we should get a big group together and go downtown. I agreed since it was a group of friends and at a casual setting. DH was a total gentleman and extremely polite. I've never been so impressed by anyone but of course....there was this other guy there who I have had a silly girl crush on for 3 years and I stuck to him like white on rice. I let DH buy me drinks all night but paid attention to my long lost lover instead.

A couple weeks later I thought about how I acted that night and probably thought I looked pretty sleezy and I texted my sorority sister and told her that I felt bad I completely blew off meeting DH and I would like to try again. We became FB friends and started chatting a little on there. I found out he was coming to a Chili-cook-off that my sorority was having for a charity event. We hung out there and went out to lunch afterwards with a group of friends.

After the event, he asked me if I would like to go out with him just us for dinner. I figured...why the hell not. So the following week he took me out to a sports bar and we were supposed to "play trivia" and watch the baseball game but we instead just chatted the entire evening. I went home that night and thought...I'm going to marry this man. DH proposed to me 10 months later and he still makes me feel like the first night we met.

LONG STORY COMING UP!

H and I went to the same university. I had a long-distance BF at the time. H spotted me walking through the hall of the science building, and noticed my hair (it's big, long, and curly). Later on in the year, he saw me sitting with my BFF at the time in the cafeteria. He had a class with her, so he came over to introduce himself. I thought he was hot.

He really liked me, but I had no idea. I lived off-campus, so between classes I would sit in the union and study or read or something. He would go check to see if I was there all the time, and eventually he figured out my class schedule. His friends gave him a hard time because if he knew I would be in the union, he would leave to go sit at my table and talk.

I brought my lunch every day because I was trying to get through college with no loans, so each day was a PBJ and some fruit. He started eating my food so I packed extra for him.

I still had a BF. H was determined to wait until we broke up, so we were just friends. My BF at the time totally knew he liked me, and would get so mad when he found out we were hanging out at school or that H got my phone number and would text me every so often.

This went on for a year or so. I finally was able to break up with my BF. H still didn't make a move. One day we were sitting at the union, and he was spinning his phone on the table (he had the old flip-keyboard kind at the time). I grabbed it, and a picture of me from FB was his background. I asked him what that was all about, and his lame response was "well, you're my best friend."

I graduated college. He asked if I wanted to go to Cheesecake Factory. I wasn't sure if it was a date. We went, and it was a date. We held hands and walked around the mall afterwards.

We were sitting in the car and he asked if I wanted to be his GF. I was so shocked, my only response was, "what, right now?!?!" His reply was a sarcastic, "no, tomorrow."

I never answered, it just kind of died. He got out of the car (we were in mine) to leave, and I grabbed him and kissed him. So he sat back down for a while.

We dated for a little bit. He went home for the summer, and we broke up. He was (in his own words) kind of a douche. We had a horrible break-up... we didn't actually break up, he just disappeared off the face of the earth and started casually seeing girls at home. I yelled at him over the phone when I finally got a hold of him weeks later. I found out recently that he just set the phone to the side while I yelled at him.

Anyway, he came back to school. I hated him, my friends hated him, he was miserable, I was miserable. I dated another guy for a few months, but I really just wanted H. A few months later, he apologized to me for what happened. I told him I didn't want to be friends, but I appreciated the apology. I told my friends to never let me date him again, because I didn't trust myself with him.

We started to be friends again. He liked another girl and wanted to talk to me about her. I was jealous and sad. We hung out a lot. Flirting started. He proved himself to me. Our feelings grew. He told a few of his closest friends that if I would go out with him again, even just one date, he would marry me.

In March 2010, we started casually dating again. He didn't really make a move (again). So, in the car one night, I kissed him (again).

In May 2010, we started to date exclusively.

In October 2010, he proposed. We married in July 2011.

I had just ended yet another bad relationship I was complaining about being single again. My BFF told her BF (now H) had a great friend and co-worker that would be great for me. She said he has cats too, likes theatre (Phantom of the Opera), and that he is a really kind guy and would treat me like a princess. So I said set me up ( apparently we had met briefly the year before but I didn't remember). I saw found him on FB and saw he was really cute.

She set up a group trip with a bunch of our friends to go see Avenue Q on Broadway in July '09. We were the only non couple so we sat together and hung out together most of the day. I had a good time, we ran into each a few other times at karokee that month. We became FB friends in August and began chatting ( I didn't think it would go far when he said sorry if I spell your name wrong, my sister has the same name but spells it a bit differently) We had our first date at the end of August. It was a perfect first date. We became exclusive 10/10/09, got engaged 3/21/13 and married 6/14/14

@eilis1228 - i was the same way with dating older guys. my 2 other serious relationships were with guys 8 and 20 years older than i am. i said i would never date someone younger. oops.

@twodimes - hahaha i was literally laughing out loud in whole foods picturing you going up to some guy who was trying to be nice and just being like DONT FUCK MY FRIEND.

@phira - i would have been the same way. i had so many guys cancel and then just never reschedule and depending on my mood i would either give them the benefit of the doubt and ask if they wanted to reschedule or just assume they were assholes.

sometimes you have to go with your gut on someone. about 2 months after i met BF (when we were still not exclusive) he did a disappearing act for about 10 days and i was livid. my friends all told me to end it but i said i really felt like i needed to give him another chance but if he ever did that again they had my word i would end it. that was actually a HUGE turning point in our relationship and the catalyst for some really open, honest conversations about what we wanted from each other and life.

one thing i noticed is that a lot of us had "non-traditional" starts with our partners. whether it being drunk sex/FWB that turned into more, or some sort of awkward situation/confrontation. its cool to see that you really never know what can happen.

We met Sophomore year in High School. We had a mutual friend and we first officially met at a school dance. We talked here and there and then he finally asked me out on AIM. We dated on and off through out high school, as much as you can "date" in high school. We broke up when we went off to college, but kept in touch.

We both saw other people, but at the start of Sophomore year of college, we got back together. I was away at college and he was home commuting so we barely saw each other. When I graduated at the end of that year (it was a community college), and came back home we started spending more time together.

I've always known it was him. Every guy I dated in college was no comparison to him and my roommate was actually the one that said "you obviously still love him since you compare every guy to him." So she was the one who convinced me to give him another chance and we've been together ever since!

My story is basically @GoldenPenguin 's story with a twist!!

My H and I went to high school together. We were in band (like @KeptInStitches ) he played sax and I played French horn so we didn't socialize much (there was quite the divide between brass and woodwinds) I was also dating a French horn player who I was OBVIOUSLY going to marry someday. Senior year, H was dating my buddy A.

By sophomore year of college I broke up with my ex. I'm pretty sure it was because I got my first ever C in organic chemistry. And he was a bit of a drinker and I was not. Sooo yea. Throughout college, my H and A dated on and off and had some crazy blowups and make ups)

The summer after college, A and I decided she was going to get back together with my H for good. And I was gonna hook up with a guy G. Note that she was serious and I was totally not looking for a relationship. Some fun times were had by all and omg I almost had sex in G's parents' bed. I was really smart lol. Left for grad school and by then A and my H hated each other again.

H and I started talking smack about each other's baseball teams via text which turned into phone calls. And like three months later he took a flight to come visit me at grad school. His dad actually paid for the flight cause he thought there was something there. We had fancy dinner and saw some people taking wedding photos on campus on our first date.

Like eight years later and we are still nerdy, silly, and awesome. Awww

I was in a relationship when I met H. I was not happy at all and thought I was giving my ex a break -- he lived with me and I covered most of the living expenses. The portion of my company was sold off, so I found a new job from a position willing to take me on when I knew nothing of the job. H was assigned as my mentor - I thought he was a little dorky/geeky when I met him. I noticed he did things that most 'gentleman' do that were nice - just silly things like hold a door open for me and stuff like that - things that you would expect. It really made me think 'huh, I'm not being treated right AT ALL in my relationship, my ex is taking advantage of me, and I do not HAVE to live the rest of my life this way - I have a right to be happy'. SO I ended things with my ex. I found out H did have a thing for me and shortly after the breakup he and I started dating.

@Dignity100 I had a similar moment with my last relationship. He was by no means taking advantage of me like your ex was with you, but we were on different pages, and he just wasn't as into the relationship as I was. I was definitely settling. I realized it when I saw how well a friend's new boyfriend treated her. I had no idea men actually treated women that well. It changed my world. I'm glad you found someone who treats you well!

@caseface5 That's really great that you guys were high school sweethearts, spent some time apart, and realized how much you really loved each other. Such a great story!

@TwoDimes hahahaha! Best introduction ever. I think guys like it when girls look out for each other. About a year ago FI and I attended a wedding for one of my college friends, and one of my other college friends he hadn't yet met was in the wedding. Even though we'd been dating almost 3 years by then, she immediately came up to FI, introduced herself, and said, "If you break her heart, I will kick your ass." FI still talks about how awesome that friend is over a year later.

@eilis1228 I didn't blow him off for misspelling my name. Once he said his sister had the same name I was thinking- "why would you want to date a girl with the same name as your sister?" Luckily he didn't mind ;-)
