Re: August 2015 Brides

  • Here!!! I gotta say I am surprised at the amount of guest that are arriving the day of the ceremony. We have an early start time too 3:30pm.
  • edited April 2015
Yayyyy! What dates? My guests are arriving Thursday and Friday. I would freak out if my guests were arriving the day of. How close are there flights?
  • Here! :)

My guests are arriving all over the place. We are getting married on Saturday at 5pm, and I have people arriving anywhere from Wednesday to Saturday morning. I hope no one's flight is delayed, @missbruiser. :/
  • Here! We have a Saturday 2pm wedding. That was not my ideal time but that's what the Aria had open. The more I thought about it, the better it worked out in my mind as we are coming from the east coast and are 3 hours ahead. By the time we sit down for dinner at 4:30, it'll be 7:30pm at home and everyone will be ready to eat! I told my guests to please fly in by Friday evening. Most are arriving thursday night or friday mid-day and are leaving monday night.
  • Ohhhh the "East Coast dilemma". I've battled with the same issue for months! We're all coming from the east and I've wondered how everyone will adjust. This is my first trip to Vegas. I think your idea is wonderful. You actually just made me reconsider my time, but I have an outdoor ceremony at sunset and I am terrified of an earlier time (due to the heat). Reception at 8:30 and I hope that is not too late for our guests who may still be on EST.

I'm sort of leaving it to my guests to figure it out for themselves... our ceremony is at 5 PM, so some of them might take early morning flights the same day. All I'm doing to help people adjust is providing plenty of caffeine and alcohol, heh.

I am REALLY not looking forward to the flight back. The time change is brutal going east :(

  • @caesarsbride15, we are also just planning to stay in Vegas for an extra week for our honeymoon. We figured we might as well make the most of it since we're already flying all the way there! :)

Are you getting your hair done at the makeup academy, too, or are you planning to book a separate artist for that?
  • edited April 2015
Actually my hair stylist from home is traveling to the wedding. I'm still stuck on make up because my bridesmaids are really picky. Right now I'm leaning towards MAC in the forum shops.
  • @caesarsbride15, that's awesome! It must be nice to have a trusted stylist with you for your big day! You might ask your bridesmaids if any of them have used MAC before or if they prefer a different brand. If they are that picky, they might prefer someone from the makeup counter of their choice to do their makeup for your wedding. I'm not sure about the Forum Shops, but Fashion Show Mall has a Dillard's, Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale's.

UPDATES: How are you ladies coming along?

    Here are my updated checks:

    Ceremony and rehearsal booked. (CP)
    Reception changed and booked. (Trevi)
    Bridal lunch booked. (Masterpiece)
Photographer booked. (Joey Allen for 8hrs)
Hotel and Flights booked. (CP, Southwest)
My dress and bridesmaids dresses purchased. (DB)
Groomsmen fitted and tuxedos selected. (MW)
Honeymoon planned (we're just extending our stay for a week and going elsewhere for our anniversary)
RSVPs are back and guest list is final.
    MOHs currently planning Bachelorette party.
Mom and MIL planning bridal showers.
    Wedding Hashtag picked
    MUA booked (BreB)

    Still working on:
    Cake
    Centerpieces for reception
    Groom's band
    Bridal gifts
    Shoes and accessories for dress
  • Done/Booked:
    Ceremony site -- Mob Museum
Reception suite -- Penthouse Superior at the Delano
Plane tickets -- uh, US Air, whatever
    My outfit -- all set
    HMUA -- Sona Cox
    Photographer -- Joey Allen

    To do:
His outfit -- I'm not getting involved, if he puts it off till the last minute it's his thing
Transportation -- for me, groom, and immediate family to the ceremony; for everybody from the ceremony back to the reception
Catering -- been dragging my feet on this, not for any good reason
Room for the rest of the weekend -- got the suite Fri-Sun, been dragging my feet on THIS because I've been fantasizing about booking it for the whole time
Rings -- can't seem to find ones we like enough to commit to (insert joke here right)

    Maybe to do:
DOC? (I REALLY want one but not sure if I should spend the money on that or one of the other things below)
Add time to photographer? (I don't care about having "getting ready" pictures so I thought 6 hours would be enough, but now I'm nailbiting about whether a lot of that time gets blown being stuck in traffic)
Flowers? (for some reason my mom is heartbroken at the idea of us not having flowers)
Cake? (for some reason my mom is heartbroken at the idea of us not having a cake)
  • edited June 2015
I had a similar dilemma with adding more photography time. In the end I decided to go with 8hrs instead of 6 because I didn't want to regret it. It was only $200 more so not too bad, considering everything else.

I think I suddenly want flowers as well. I heard Pam the Palette was good. Do you want flowers for the ceremony, reception or both?

Where are you planning to stay for the rest of the week? Are you planning on cupcakes, if not cake?

The Mob Museum is awesome! ...what's your date again?
  • I'm getting married August 19. Finally nailed down enough details to check things off the list.

    Booked:
    Ceremony: Wedding Suite Cosmopolitan
Reception Dinner: Scarpetta private room, Cosmopolitan
    Afterparty: Reservation at Mandarin Bar
    Flights: Southwest
Hotel: Cosmopolitan Terrace Suite (hopefully to be upgraded to Wraparound Terrace Suite)
Photographer: Gin & Sake - currently have 4 hours to cover ceremony and dinner but may add a 5th to make sure we get getting ready pics and pics around the resort -- Thoughts on this??
    Room Block: Cosmopolitan
Invites: being mailed out next week - made by my awesome sister
    Wedding website: the knot.com!
Cake: Cosmo's catering department to be delivered to Scarpetta
Dress: had my first fitting today!! :D
    Cake Topper: Etsy
    Hair/Makeup: Amelia C & Co
    Shoes: Cole Haan

    Still need to do:
Flowers - this will go through the coordinator at the Cosmo but I still need to pick out what I want
    Groom's Tux
    Music
    Slide Show for Suite
Veil - on the fence if I want to spend the $$$ for the one I love at the bridal boutique or just buy a cheap one from eBay or etsy.
    Rings
    Groom's gift

If you guys can think of anything I might have missed please let me know.... It seems a little too easy to have this much done already. What am I forgetting?

  • edited June 2015
Hey! You're right after me. I'm the 15th. How was the fitting?! Was it exciting???

I can better help with photography if you give a little timeline. Side note: I REALLY wanted Gin and Sake but their prices were not in the budget. Let me see...

Do you have transportation for after party?

Essentials and accessories for dress? (Slip, bra, sash, earrings, etc.)?

Will you need the dress steamed?

Have you started looking at floral ideas? (I'm doing this now)

Any decorations for reception? (Place cards, center pieces, favors, etc)
  • Hi @caesarsbride15!  Congrats!!  Maybe we will see each other on the strip that week.

The fitting was great. I only bought my dress a month ago but I already forgot how much I loved it until I put it on again today. I am so excited to see it when it actually fits my body. I can't wait to wear it!

I don't have a timeline set just yet as I still need to talk with my coordinator at the cosmo to get her input.  I have my hair and makeup starting at 1pm to be done by 3ish. I assume I will be heading down to the wedding suite at least a half hour before hand. I am not sure if I should have the photographers in my room while I am getting ready or if having them in the bridal suite within the wedding suite will be enough.  The ceremony starts at 4pm and after the ceremony there is a cocktail reception in the suite for an hour and a half. By that time it should be 6pm. I am hoping my husband and I can get away to go take some pictures around the cosmo, chandelier bar, purple couches etc. We have a dinner reservation in the private room at 6:30pm - my guest will know where to go so if hubby and I are a few minutes behind them, I don't think it will be an issue. At this point we will have either an hour or an hour and a half left with the photographers. Not sure if they are needed at this point but I do want to have a couple of pictures with the cake. I don't know if it is going to be worth it to have them there the whole time just to get some cake pictures.  I have also been toying with the idea of having the cake at the cocktail reception and doing the cake up there. But that is kind of backwards since we will be eating dinner right after.  Its like cutting the cake during the cocktail hour at a more traditional wedding... weird I think.

I am not providing transportation I have guests staying all over the strip and we do not have a bridal party. I am hoping they can all be responsible enough to show up at 4pm for the ceremony, the dinner is downstairs  so no travel there.

My dress/ accessories are pretty much done. I bought some bra inserts today to try with the cups they are adding to the dress. I have earring picked out and have an idea of the other jewelry I want to wear.  The only thing I really need to figure out is the veil.

I bought a travel steamer today along side a carryon suitcase. My bridal store told me they can help me pack the dress into the carryon so that it won't get too wrinkled.  I need to practice with my new steamer to make sure its gonna take care of wrinkles in tulle.

I have an idea of the flowers I want. Im thinking white peonies with purple roses...  I attached my inspiration picture.

I don't think I will have time to set up the space at the restaurant before the dinner so I am not too worried about trying to jam in favors or decorations. If anything I may ask if we can take the flowers down from the suite and bring them to the restaurant.

I want to do a welcome bag but even though I only have 30 guests they are staying all over the strip. I feel like it might be a days worth of travel up and down the strip to deliver bags to all the hotels.  I feel like I could spend my time and money more wisely.

I forgot to mention that we booked a cabana at the pool for the next day which I am really excited about. Now I need to find cute "bridal" bathing suit. ;)
  • @kgales1 first of all your sig gif makes me crack up every. single. time. I see it. Well done.

Re: photographer, I would definitely add another hour if you want getting ready pics. But I totally understand if you don't want them, because I don't either  ;)

Re: veil, you could always split the difference and look around on Etsy or eBay to see if there are veils similar to the $$$ one you want! Or see if an artist on Etsy would make you a similar one for cheaper.
  • @damnthetorpedoes - thank you! Kimmy Schmidt is my new fav show. I've already watched the whole season twice!

I'm think of just adding the extra hour. I'd rather have more pictures than I thought I would want then regret not having enough. We're only doing this day once!

I bought a veil on eBay that was similar to the one I liked in the store but it look like I bought it from eBay.  The concept is the same but the execution isn't the best.  I'm thinking of maybe trying to DIY.... although I usually overestimate my craftsmanship and need my artsy sister to rescue me.
  • caesarsbride15 said: Do you want flowers for the ceremony, reception or both? Well... neither, I think they're kind of a waste of money. But I was talking on the phone with my mom a while back, she asked if we were having flowers, I said "nah," and she burst into tears. ... so I think now I have to have at least a bouquet.

Where are you planning to stay for the rest of the week?
Definitely in the Delano, probably in one of their regular rooms. It's definitely possible they'd just upgrade us if no one else books it for the time period we want, but I'm sorely tempted to just throw down the money to guarantee it. Except for the part where that's another four-figure sum added to the budget. -_-

Are you planning on cupcakes, if not cake?
Had been planning on a dessert buffet from wherever we cater and not worrying about a cake at all, but again, my mom got REALLY upset (not quite as upset as she was about the flowers) when she found out we weren't having one. She's not normally passive-aggressive or the type who cries to get her way or anything like that, nor has she ever been especially passionate about cake or flowers, so both of these outbursts were totally unexpected. These are literally the only things my mom has dug in about at all, though, and her own wedding was awful in just about every way, so I'm willing to bend on these little things if they'll make her happy. ... anyway, none of that actually answers your question. I assume there'll have to be at least an 8" round to count as a "cake" in my mom's eyes. I don't know.

The Mob Museum is awesome! ...what's your date again?
August 22nd! We're really excited for the Mob Museum -- it's "us" in a lot of really bizarre ways.
  • UPDATE: Got off my butt about catering following a State of the Wedding talk with FH wherein I realized I really didn't mind which one we picked of the 4 options we'd narrowed it down to, and FH had a REALLY strong opinion in favor one of them...

So we're getting catered by the Cornish Pasty Co.!

I'm actually kind of excited about this now. Hand-held food is great for a laid-back party and a lot of the things on the menu look REALLY delicious. And if anyone else is considering it and worries about any gluten-free guests, fear not -- they will make any of their pasties without the shell, they just bake the filling in a ceramic crock.
This also partly solves the cake issue from the last post. Neither of us are that crazy for this place's dessert selection, so we'll be shopping elsewhere for that anyway. Might as well see what it costs to get a little cake!

If anyone is curious, the runners-up were:
-- Masterpiece Cuisine, well known to this forum and with experience getting in and out of hotels. We might still use them for bar services because Liquid Courage and Events with a Twist apparently can't be bothered with my event and I don't really know where else to look.
-- Firefly Tapas, very nice selection of food and good reviews here, but figuring out the pricing/portioning was a bit confusing, and the catering salesperson was kinda pushy and oblique
-- Bronze Cafe was a very close runner-up, FH liked them too, but he loved the pasties, so we went with that. I do want to say that the person I was in contact with (David Mozes, the general manager) was AWESOME and was also totally willing to make off-menu items for us. They don't have an official website, but you can see their catering menu here: https://www.facebook.com/bronzecafelv/app_187136414669863?ref=page_internal

  • Are any of you guys giving your parents gifts?  We don't have a bridal party, we're not having a rehearsal dinner. So there won't be any place really to present gifts to people.

Do you think it would be okay to give them something after the wedding, like a photo book of pictures from the week?

My other questions is, my sister is doing our invitations as a wedding gift to us. Do you guys think I should buy her a little something a thank you?  Is giving a gift for getting a gift weird?
  • We plan to give our parents an album after the wedding. Our mothers will be present while I get ready and I want to give them a gift (probably jewelry) when I pass out my bridesmaid gifts the morning of the wedding.

Kgales, I don't think there is anything wrong with giving her a gift. That's thoughtful of you!

Well, back to the @#$% drawing board with catering. >_<

I told Cornish Pasty I was ready to make a deposit and asked how to go about it... and I didn't hear back from them for a few days. Rather an unusual response to someone trying to give you money.

So I sent a message through the contact form on their website. Once I did THAT I got a response immediately -- saying that they "may need to do a bit more research into the county and city regulations for licensing and permits" but the owner and the GM "have been very interested in getting into catering events in general."

Ex-squeeze me? A-baking powder? You DON'T cater, but you have been LEADING ME ON that you DO? You don't even KNOW what you need to do to GET A PERMIT? And it takes you THREE FULL DAYS and a poke in the side to even OWN UP to it? No. No no no no no no no no no. This is my freaking wedding and you want to use it for catering practice? Forget it. No.

FH is pretty depressed about this; he loved the idea of having pasties as well as the general idea of having interesting food at our wedding. I'm also shopping for a DOC at the moment, so I might consult with them about suggestions for something else unusual-but-awesome once I hire one.
  • @damnthetorpedoes, that's awful! I'm sure you'll find something great, though. Keep looking!

As you probably already know, most of us are using Masterpiece for our catered events. If all else fails, they have a pretty good reputation.

As they say here in Korea, Fighting!!!!! (You can do it!) :)
  • That sucks! I love that place! I am sure you will find something great still. Have you looked into Masterpiece?
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I have! FH wasn't very excited about them because he thought their food was kinda boring. Still, I'm keeping them on the short list, given that they have a track record of awesome in-suite catering.

We are using Sauced as our meet and greet catering. They have been incredibly responsive, cheaper than what Masterpiece quoted, and the menu looks awesome. Our wedding is in two weeks- I'll post a review on how it works out!
