  • lyndausvi (don't want to add to the giant tree) Holy crap, custom-made linens?!

H's brother had a million dollar wedding (he married an heiress) and from what everyone has said, the food wasn't very good and it was tiny portions. The bride spent a fortune on things like flowers and videographers, but then cut corners on food and staff (so H's dad spent the entire day setting all the tables while his mom and sister were in the kitchen washing dishes from the rehearsal dinner so they could be re-used for the reception. There was no staff to do any of this).

The parents' gardeners were apparently sent into town to buy more silverware, and some other random relatives got stuck on a wild goose chase for some other random thing. It sounded like a huge mess.

If I spent that much on a wedding, I'd go for the best food ever. But that's just me.

Trust me the food will be amazing  :P  I might be bias though.   The parents are members (and own a home on property) who live in another state.  They specifically picked our place over their hometown because they love DH's cooking.  DH is flying in fish from the east coast.  Beef from somewhere in Texas.  Caviar from Russia.   The wine from Europe.

Just saying that the cost of the food isn't as much as some of the other stuff.   This family is shipping in special  chairs from Denver because they do not like the our chairs nor the chairs at the local rental place.   I think the plates and stuff are coming from somewhere out east.

They will NOT be setting up their own stuff. They asked and are paying for extra staff.   Not that the couldn't do stuff, it's just they want to enjoy themselves also.

The family is awesome.   Sure they fly in on their private plane, yet later that day I run into them picking up their dry cleaning.

Oh yeah, I have no doubt your DH will make them some amazing food! Sorry, I feel like I suck at getting my point across. I just meant that to me, spending a ton of money on things like custom-made linens is nuts and unnecessary. If I had a huge budget, I'd still have the same priorities, which would be food, liquor, and music. That's where the majority of our budget went. I doubt anyone cared about (or even remembers) our linens. And I also made sure we had staff so our families weren't working! lol

Maybe my mind would change if I were wealthy, but when I hear of the stuff that people dump tons of money into it seems so odd to me.

I'm a food, booze, entertainment and photographer person.

Those things I will spend money on (with photographer last on that list).   Others are just fluff.

I've seen a bunch of 1 million dollar weddings.     $100K on custom furniture.  For 1 day.   And then it's not even theirs to keep.      $200K on flowers?   The numbers are staggering.

Food only costs so much though. Plus he is only feeding a few hundred people.  Not 1000's.  Sure DH is shipping in beef from TX, but the cost between him doing that and using the beef he normally uses is only a few grand more.  Not 100's of thousands of dollars more.  He isn't buying $500 a head lettuce for the salad or $10 per potato.

In general the more expensive the wedding the lower the food costs become.   The real money is being spent on the extras.  If they spend $300 per head on food for 250 people  it's "only" $75K.  Compared to $100K in just flowers it's not all that much.  However, the food can still amazing.

  • If I had a million dollar wedding, I'd have the douche burger served by this dude in a mink coat at a cost of $666 per burger: "a lobster-, truffle-, and caviar- topped, foie gras-stuffed Kobe puck that's slathered in champagne steam-melted Gruyere and doused with Kopi Luwak coffee bean BBQ sauce, then served in a gold leaf wrapper." The burger is an F-you to rich people burgers, so I'd have that and say F-you to $200k flowers. Bwahaha.

  • BIL attended a wedding of a friend in mexico. On the night before the wedding, a few of the guys go downtown (cabo). Apparently the cab driver tries to rip them off, asks for extra money, and calls up his cabbie friends in the area to jump these guys. They didn't bring any cell phones with them, and had no ID. No one could find them in the morning, but one of them had mentioned to someone going out at night. So anyways, they find them in the hospital, because they had no ID they wouldn't let them leave until someone came to pick them up. The groom had a broken nose and the rest of his face was pretty fucked up. He came and went during the reception because he was in so much pain, and the wife was by herself for most of the time.

Anyways, everyone that hears that story thinks they were trying to buy drugs, and got themselves into a bad situation. I wouldn't doubt it. But that would be pretty bad.

  • Holy crap Teddy. That has to be very scary to not be able to find people, in an unfamiliar place especially.

  • Yeah, I cant even imagine. I was trying to find pics from their wedding, but I'm not friends with either of them on FB.

  • I don't know if I would say this ruined their wedding, but I know a pretty awful story from a girl I went to college with. I'm not very close with her, but we have tons of mutual friends, many of which were at her wedding.

After the reception her best friend from high school and her SO were driving home and got in a car accident. From what I've heard, alcohol wasn't involved, it was just like a freak accident. The SO was wearing his seatbelt and was pretty beat up but was fine. The BFF wasn't wearing hers, she was launched through the windshield and died on impact. Even though there was literally nothing that the bride could have done, if I were her, I would probably harbor so much guilt over what happened every time I think of my wedding day.
