Oh, my mother was pissed. There was just nothing she could do about it, and I've long been used to pissing off my mother by not catering to her crap, so it didn't faze me.

By contrast, she still has my sister's list from 2003 to gauge what to give her friends' kids.

  • Seems like she's either texting me from my dads phone, or has somehow got him on this crazy train

sorry they are on the crazy train.

Do you drink?  If yes, I give you permission to start NOW.   And  just put down the phone.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • You laid it on line, there, so they'll either back off or escalate. Turn your phone off and do something fun.

  • Definitely back away from the phone and into the liquor cabinet.
  • H and I are headed down to the regatta to celebrate the start of the weekend. Drinks for days!
  • She's concerned with how much guests spent on gifts? Unfortunately for her (and fortunately for most guests), just because something looks fancy/expensive doesn't mean it is...for example a capuchino machine brand could be super expensive at one store, but on sale at another/cheaper online. So by her logic, gifter 1 could've spent less on a more expensive gift, but will receive a better gift than someone who spent the same amount as gifter 1 for the sale price item? That sounds crazy. I'm glad you aren't giving in on this one. Ignore her and don't continue to engage her on this subject.

    Have fun at the regatta!

Everyone gave us cash and she knows it. She's essentially asking me for dollar amounts

So and so made a lovely donation to our house fund, towards a new grill, whatever.

Although, I loved the "boundaries" in your text message.

I have no doubt my mother will pull the same crap so I feel for you!
