Grandmother standing in as MOB?

My parents are both deceased. My dad about 10 years ago and my mom about 3 years ago. I'll be 28 at my wedding if that's relevant.

My mother's grandmother is still alive and has been a large part of my up bringing (as was my grandfather who's also deceased). I think my grandmother would be honored to 'give me away.' So, when MOB would walk down the aisle, my grandmother will.

My question is how do I explain in my program?

Currently, I'm doing a 2 sided long/skinny program (about 4" wide x 8.5" long) with the ceremony schedule on the front, then the back to include parents of the bride/groom, wedding party and a memorial section-- the back will look something like this.

----------------------------
Parents of the Bride
Parents of the Groom
Matron of Honor
Best Man

In loving memory of those who cannot be with us today:
Parents of the Bride
Grandfathers of the Bride
Grandfathers of the Groom
----------------------------

So, again, I'm not sure where or how to explain my grandmother will stand in as MOB...

Don't try to "explain" this.  I would just list her as Grandmother of the Bride.  Don't list your parents in the "Parents of the Bride" section but leave them where they are in the memoriam section.  People will get it.

  • If your ceremony schedule is detailed you could put something along the lines of:
Bride escort: Grandmother of the Bride

But I agree with PP, people will get it. Plus, you can choose anyone to walk you down the aisle, so you don't have to try and justify or explain anything.

You do not substitute someone in place of your parent.  Your grandmother is not standing in for your late mother.  She is your grandmother.  She has a place of honor.

Many people who do not have living parents get married.  This is not all that unusual.
The person who walks you down the aisle is your escort.  This can be anyone you choose, even your FI.  The "giving away" is later in the ceremony, and it is optional.  My uncle answered the "who gives this woman" question with "Her family does."  That covers everybody.

Anyone can walk you down the aisle, no explanation needed.

I would put her on your program as Grandmother of the Bride.

  • Thanks so much for all of the input. It's helped a lot. All of this makes way more sense now.
