I went to high school with this girl who had a baby this last weekend, so I added her to facebook yesterday so I could see pictures of the little girl.  She just posted this:

** Image removed based on Admin's discretion **

So I was like "WOAH friend. That baby needs a rear facing car seat! Front facing isn't safe for babies!"

Would you believe the amount of shit that was just flung my way by her and all her friends? Apparently because I'm not a parents and specifically not this girl's parent I have no say in which car seats are appropriate for her to use.

Am I wrong? Maybe I'm wrong...

ETA: I'm an asshole and blind. I owe that Mama a drink.  Make fun of me now, please. :)

ETA Again... Wait... am I wrong? That looks like a front facing seat thats just facing backwards?

  • Haha! Yeah she's definitely rear facing.

Any car seat (other than a booster I believe) can be rear facing :)  It does look like one of the convertible car seats (that can be used rear facing for babies and toddlers and forward facing once they hit the right size) vs. a traditional infant seat (like the ones that clip into the stroller/base)
  • I feel bad now. I just remember seeing this post by a new mom who was using a front facing car seat for her newborn and the baby died because she got in an accident and that's the last thing I want for anyone.

I definitely feel like an asshole.
  • I think it is rear-facing. I had to look at it twice to tell, though.
  • That's a convertible car seat or a 3 in 1. We have a similar car seat for my son. Because we walk everywhere, I used a ring sling when I went out so I didn't want one of those travel seats for a stroller because I wasn't getting a stroller until he was 7 months old.

The 3 in 1's recline in the rear position, sit up in forward facing, and then have a booster.

    You were in the wrong.
  • Looks like a rear facing too me.

Car seats change so much from year to year.  Rear facings look more front facing from years past.

That said, I do not think FB is the appropriate place to be calling out something like that anyway.

Generally I'm with you on not calling people out on facebook... but I didn't mean it in a mean way. I was genuinely concerned for the baby. Save baby's life vs. calling someone out? Save baby's life always wins.

I was definitely wrong.  I'm glad I'm not the only one that had to look twice.

This. And re-posting to another website without her knowledge probably wasn't the nicest thing either.

Am I the only one who can't see the picture?

And if you really really really can't live with yourself without saying something to someone in a situation like this, send them a PM or text.  Don't call them out publicly.
  • Haha whoops!

When I first saw this thread, only "NWR: Front Facing Ca" showed and I thought it was going to be a rant about how we all look like this on a front facing camera phone:

    image
    YES!  WHY is this??
  • I can't see the picture either. Did the girl not comment "it is rear facing" I mean wouldn't that be the first thing she would have said? But yeah I agree with the others about not calling people out on things like this on FB. Like boston said, if you are concerned then PM her. Hopefully you edited your comment to her and apologized for your mistake.

That's the thing though... no one has said it's rear facing. She said "Wow... thanks" and now the picture's gone? So I don't know what to think now.

    ETA: Typeo
  • Well don't be shocked if she blocks or unfriends you.  I mean that wasn't the best first impression you made.

And I can see the picture now, and sorry but it is pretty obviously rear facing.

Then PM her, do not try to humiliate her only to find out you are wrong.

Hospitals do not let babies leave unless the child is properly secure in the correct type of car seat.  Sure it's possible they pulled one over on hospital, but for the most part parents are not going to do a bait and switch over a car seat.

It remains to me one of the great mysteries of modern technology.

I can see it now too, and I agree that it's pretty clearly rear facing.  Also just seeing now that you just added this person as a Facebook friend specifically to see photos of her baby.  So you did that and immediately publicly criticized her parenting skills?  If someone did that to me they'd be unfriended and blocked faster than you can say binky.

Eh, I don't take unfriending personally. It happens, and I screwed up so whatever.

It took me more than one look to see it was rear facing. Oh well, it happens. Mistakes are made. Apologies are given.
  • Yeah, I'm not sure where the dashboard is in your car but that looks rear facing to me.

There are two different kinds of car seats that are acceptable for use by a newborn:

    1) The infant carrier - that's the "bucket loader" kind that can be carried.   When using this kind of seat, you need to install the car seat base and the carrier seat clips into the base.   That kind of car seat is generally designed for smaller babies (ours is  Chicco Keyfit 30 which olds babies up to 30 lbs and/or 30 inches.)   When DS reaches one of those limits, he needs to move to a convertible.

    2) The convertible car seat.   This is the "standard" kind of car seat that is used for any child too young for a booster.   A convertible can be used from the newborn stage and many go up to very high weight/height limits.   DD is in a Britax that goes up to 70lbs.   The Diono Radians are convertibles that can also convert to boosters and hold kids in the high 80 lb range.

You don't *need* an infant carrier seat but they're often used for the ease of carrying a sleeping baby when you need to move him in an out of places so you can go about your day.   You can get by on just the convertible.

In fact, it's actually recommended that when your child out grows the infant carrier seat, you still use a convertible and rear face for as long as possible.   The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommends children rear face until they are a minimum of 2 years old and longer if possible although in many states you can legally forward face once the child is one year old.    The child is still safer rear facing with cramped legs compared to forward facing due to the ability to keep the neck safe in the event of a crash.

The concern I'd have here is how old is the car in question because LATCH is what should be used in most newer cars vs. using the car seats to strap down.   BUT, it looks like someone is trying to install that seat in the picture.
  • My favorite part of this entire thing is the obvious rearview mirror.

@loveislouder, you acted like a real dick to your friend. Holy shit, I just realized she isn't even your friend, just an acquaintance from high school whose pictures you wanted to stalk, who you then shamed on her own Facebook page with incorrect information!

Nevermind, THAT is my favorite part.
Yeah I'mma have to agree here. Not only was it pretty shitty of you to call her out like that, even if she were your best friend, but it's even worse that you don't even know this girl anymore. I don't even comment at all on super old acquaintances' facebooks at all. Regardless of which way the baby is facing, this was pretty bad crappy.

  • PPs got it covered but dude, you seriously need to take down that picture. I know a lot of moms that do NOT want pictures of their kid on the internet without their permission. I know she posted on her FB wall but that doesn't give you permission to post it out on the rest of the world wide web.

Is it a TOS violation? Then the mods can warn me and pull it down.

I don't know if it's a TOS violation but it's pretty crappy that you're violating this girl's privacy and putting her baby's picture on the internet for everyone to see, and for no other reason than to try and get all of us to call her out as well (which, I'm glad to say, has spectacularly backfired).

No it isn't.  But it is common courtesy to this random acquaintance on FB that you not repost pictures of her child on other websites.  And seeing as you called this girl out who you never speak to and was wrong, I would suggest taking the picture down.

  • You need to remove that picture. That is all kinds of messed up.

You legit don't understand why posting pictures of someone else's kid on a public internet site without their permission is not cool? You honestly don't get that?

    Ok.

Why are you so adamant about leaving it up? It is not your picture to share

That was going to be my question. In Canada any car manufactured after 2005 has to have the latches for car seats installed in the cars.

this is also a prime example of why privacy settings are so important.
