Whoooaaaaa whoa whoa.  I am late to this party, but I was totally fooled.  Looking back on it now though, I'm surprised that the turkey baster story didn't make my spidey sense tingle even more.  I remember thinking it was a super weird story at the time, but hey, sure.

I don't get why people catfish.  I think it's sad that people feel the need to create this entire alter ego online.  Also, I used to think I wouldn't ever be fooled by a fake persona when I watched Catfish... I guess I was wrong.  That was pretty elaborate, she has been on I think the entire time I've had an account, almost a year.
Honestly, that was the thing that tipped me off. Maybe bc my sister and her wife tried for 10 months before they were able to conceive with their doctor's help and actual AI (not IVF), where they but the sperm way up in at the top of your uterus...so something about a coffee cup full of spunk from the BFF, sitting on the counter with a "medical grade turkey baster" working on the very first cycle - just didn't add up in my head.

That one blew my BS meter. Part me me was going I was hoping I was just bitter that other people were shockingly that lucky when my sister wasn't, but turns out it was all just a bunch of lies.

I honestly didn't pick up on the fake-ness, but I assumed the turkey baster story was kind of like a YAY Wifey is pregnant, here's a funny story so I don't bum you out with how hard it is to actually conceive, YKWIM?
  • Well I am shocked about all of this. I clearly am not on TK as much as I thought I was, because I never once questioned any of this. I come on for the drama and advice and then forget about it until the next time.

Basically. I lurk often but post intermittently. I had no inclination that MI/VG was a catfish. Holy backstory Batman! Homegirl(boy?) should become a novelist.

  • Does anyone find themselves questioning things now? Like... if I didn't know I was real I'd think I was an AE because I don't post pictures of us and we've had some pretty outlandish things happen in our lives.
Yes, I definitely think I have TK paranoia. Like if I heard a noise outside of my house I'd jump and think it's someones AE. :p I'm joking about that part, but yes, I'm definitely questioning things!

I think someone is friends with HGF in real life (can't remember who the poster is), and she posted pics of her wedding before, so I think she's real. I think she just got run off that time a bunch of old regs ganged up on her.

I'm kinda now questioning some others that had crazier stories and then kinda just disappeared.

The one with the camo bedding was a real person - I checked!
I can't vouch for the bedding though.

I've always been suspicious by nature, but I just basically take everything here with a grain of salt and don't really care one way or another. I am friends off board with a good group of Knotties, and I know they are real, and that's enough for me.

This.  I am not very suspicious, but like Addie, I take everything with a grain of salt on here.  I don't really question things because lets face it, this is a wedding forum, so in the grand scheme of things, nothing on here is that important to get worked up about or look into further.

Yea, I remember that one lol. Or the other one that comes to mind is the chick whose MIL went missing, and then her body turned up somewhere (I think?). This was like 2 weeks before her wedding or something. The details are a bit fuzzy.

I remember her. LAM something. Didn't she have Tinkerbell in her profile picture?

ETA: @LAM524 I had to look her up.

Sadly, that one was true. There were articles and news stories about it. Another woman was found in Florida, alive, about 2 weeks before the OP's MIL was found dead. I was all excited hoping it was her MIL. That was a such a tragic story.

  • Yes, LAM was the one with the missing MIL. While the STORY was real, I don't think it was HER family it happened to. She had WAY too many crazy dramas for one person.

There's no question that Smichek and HGF are "real." I know they exist. I've seen pics of both and don't doubt their overall big picture selves. I don't think either of them were catfish. I even used to be in a private FB group with HGF before she went superior on everyone. I do think one of you among us is currently the catfish replacement of HGF, like I said before. As for Smichek, I just think she made a lot of shit up. And that she was a fool for not listening to the advice of seasoned teachers (if she really was one).

I wonder where is the line between making a lot of shit up and being a catfish? I mean besides the obvious alter ego! Maybe one of them was real?

HGF is also before my time, so I can't claim that fame.

His/her lack of pictures was not a flag for me.  A lot of people do not post pictures.

I like MI at first.  I was one of the first to page him/her in a post welcoming them.   Saying how much I enjoyed them being here.

It was more over time things started not adding up for me.  Things were too convenient in their lives.   The tone of the replies were changing.  The escalation of certain threads.  The fact they pretty much only posted on hot threads.   I started to get suspicious they were only trolling to stir up shit.

Had the MI kept posting like they did when they first started, not sure I would have thought of anything.

    This.

What really did it for me was her job. If she was a tattoo artist how did she have so much tI me to post so much? Tattooers typically are super busy all day sketching, tattooing, meeting with clients, working on projects, answering phones, cleaning, etc. (Unless youre Kat von D your shop is not likely to have a cleaning person or receptionist. It's possible but not likely). When asked tattoo information she would give super general vague info, not at all like what an actually tattooer would give.

  • Well, Magic fooled me. I will say that I had two tiny "ping" moments with her in the past, but nothing that now makes me feel like, "damn, I knew it!"

Those moments were: 1) I really thought sperm was best served cold, so I was a little surprised by the friend just leaving it in a coffee mug on the counter, and; 2) Once, when someone asked for a picture of something (some tattoo work maybe?) her response just seemed classic evasive. It was along the lines of "yeah, maybe when I get home, I don't have my blah blah blah with me here." Like, shouldn't she have an online portfolio or some pics saved on the very computer she's knotting from?

But anyway. Those pings were definitely overridden and I just assumed that either I was imagining things or she was just telling a little white lie here and there, which I really don't have a problem with. Mad respect to those who actually figured it all out.

I think people embellish stuff all the time. Whether it's adding a zero to a price, name dropping, one-upping, whatever. I just kind of roll my eyes.

However, I do remember calling someone out on it once just because it was so blatantly obvious (and I was in kind of a bad mood) - she said her Maggie dress was $3,000 when it was pretty easy to google and it was actually $1,800. She continued to say she paid $3K after she got called out... I mean, whatever. I felt bad for her either way - either she got ripped off, or she felt the need to embellish on the Luxury wedding board.

I was the one who called her out. She kept claiming she bought the dress from a "high-end" store and that was why it cost more.

I think you need to re-read the thread.  Southern in fact pointed out before you did.    You even liked her reply.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  • Newb question here, and maybe there is no answer:  but why would someone want to troll or catfish here?  What exactly does someone get out of it?  That part makes no sense to me.  I'm confused.  I just don't get it.

Otherwise, I'm sad that the POG handle is gone, I got the reference immediately and my secret side that loves teeny bopper movies was very excited.
