So, if you host a dinner party, do you make chicken and lobster, but only give lobster to the guests who drop a $50.00 dollar bill on their way in the door? What about wine? Put a glass of water next to each setting, but tell them it'll be $5.00 if they want wine with their dinner? Of course not. When you plan a party, you should plan on paying to host it. You don't charge guests. You host what you can afford, and if you can't afford it, you don't serve it.

This isn't regional. It's social circles. Plenty of people in Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and New York know that they shouldn't charge their guests for food and beverages they should be hosting. It may be normal in your social circle, because no one taught them etiquette, but that doesn't mean it's normal for your region.

A wedding reception is a party, just like any other party. If you want to throw a party, you pay for it. If you can't afford your dream reception, you either invite less people, or change your vision of what your dream is to fit into your budget.

Not even a little bit. As PPs have said, CUTURAL TRADITIONS vary, MANNERS do not. Just because your sister's husband's cousin's boyfriend's dog walker had a cash bar and said it was fine, does NOT make it fine. Your sister's husband's cousin's boyfriend's dog walker has bad manners. If you have a cash bar, so will you. You are spending a lot of money on things that do not require budgets that high, and you are better off hosting a proper wedding that can be fit to work within your budget, rather than having guests at your party wondering where your manners went. Also, not that it matters, but you are not having a "country wedding dance". You are hosting a wedding in a reception hall or a hotel, as you said those were your only options. Either would be tacky. Would you host a dinner party in your home and charge people for the drinks you offered? I think not.

Funny, I'm having a "country wedding dance" pretty much, with close to 200 on the guest list, and I still think it's rude as hell to have a cash bar.

So weird, two of the last three weddings I went to were country wedding dances in rural areas, and they both had open bars.
