  • About the nipples - there were special bras in the late 70s that were for larger ladies, to make them look as if they weren't wearing a bra.  Warner's made one called, "Not All That Bra" and I had a drawer full of them.  They were very comfortable, but I never wore them with anything remotely transparent.  The ended with the invention of the push-up bra (Magic Bra).  It stopped being about nipples and started being about cleavage.

Wait... So they were bras with fake nipples on them, so it looked like you weren't wearing a bra? That's just strange. I guess it's a good example of how fashion changes, though.

No.  The fabric of the bra cup was a nylon transparent mesh, sort of like pantyhose for your boobs.  The elastic straps were the same as today.  It did keep you from too much wobbling or drooping. (Sigh!  I was a 38C waaay back when.)

  • I failed the pencil test miserably. In fact, I nearly lost the pencil. :(

Yup!  That was the market that bra I described was designed for!  DH loved those bras, and he is very sad that they went out of fashion.

  • I don't understand the logic of wearing a bra that looks like you're not wearing a bra. But the ad is really funny - 'sensual cold weather look.'

  • A jerk-guy I knew once confessed that he liked to hang out in the refrigerator aisle of the grocery store where he worked to see the nipples.  Ew!...and, no, I wouldn't go out with him.

  • I'd rather show nipples than wear a push up bra. But as I'm about a 28H in US conversion I think, pushing em up is pointless. Sigh.

All I can think about with the man bulge is please don't let the crotch seam rip out.

Just popped in to say my mom loves to tell me the 70s was the era where "everyone tried to make everything as ugly as humanly possible."

My parents got married in the 70s and my dad had the most hilarious white suit I have ever seen. Massive lapels, kinda fro-y hair, and mid-height platform shoes. If I remember correctly, they all had the ruffles, too. My mom's dress has full-length sleeves with slightly puffy shoulders. I actually put it on the other day and OMG it was so comfortable. I forget what she said the material was, but it felt like a nightgown.
My mother refers to the seventies as "the decade taste forgot". Looking at some of the outfits my brother and I used to wear, I agree.

Dear Abby devised the pencil test. If you could place a pencil under your breast and it stayed, your breasts were too large or saggy to go braless. I passed the pencil test so I could go au naturale. I didn't need a nipple bra.

Oh goodness! I hate when nipples show and I hate push up bras.

My mom wore thin mesh bras up until just 10 years ago or so. She said dad didn't like grabbing foam when he grabbed her boobs! I said I don't care, I don't want my nipples showing. H can just suck it or just sneak around back and unhook which he likes to do.
