  I haven't matched anything so far. Our STDs had a photo of us outside with the fall colors in the background. The right side of the card was a black background and white text with our info listed.
  
  Our wedding invites are brown with dark brown leaf outlines. The fact that both had nature elements on them is the closest we came to matching.

  It might be common for all these items to match, but it's not mandatory and won't look strange if they don't.

  Nope they don't need to match. Our Save the Dates are very different from our invite suite. We did have our invite suite (invite, rsvp, info card) all match. We aren't doing programs. I actually bought a big pack of thank you cards for much cheaper at target. 

  
  

  Our thought was that we wanted to spend the money on the invites making them match the atmosphere of our wedding where for the thank you's the importance is in what is written and they don't need to be as expensive of a card.

  I don't think they need to match exactly (ie from the same "suite) but I do think it's nice when at least the STD, invite, and paper at the wedding (ie place cards, programs) sort of go together. 

  
  

  For example, my STDs were made of brown kraft cardstock and involved twine.  My invite envelopes and outer "folder" were also brown kraft cardstock (background paper was a paisley and everything was printed on ivory cardstock).  My escort cards are brown kraft cardstock with twine.  My programs are all the same papers as my invites, mostly because we have the paper left over, so I guess those match exactly.  But anyway, all the same "look" but not exact matches.

  
  

  My thank you cards are from the clearance bins at various stores, and I had some printed with our picture and us holding a "thank you" sign from our engagement pics, so those don't match at all, and who cares

  
  

  I also think that nobody at the wedding, other than whoever is making the paper items, will notice if they match at all.

  Agree with all of the above.  We found a particular and distinctive font that we loved, and that's been the common thread through the STDs, invites, website, our return address stamp, etc. - and will also be on menu cards and such at the wedding.  Everything has a similar feel to it, but not matchy.  

  
  

  Bottom line, don't kill yourself trying to match everything if it's not that personally important to you - especially thank you cards in the same suite from WPD because they are so much more expensive than generic ones from Target.  Very few people will notice that everything matches.

  Mine all coordinated with each other, but did not necessarily match.    My STD were a photo magnet, with brown background and purple writing.

  
  

  Our invites were brown pocket folds with ecru paper with brown writing.  There was a purple starfish on the invite with a purple wax seal.  

  
  

  The escort, programs and timelines for the OOT bags were off-white with either purple or brown writing. Can't remember, maybe a combo.  We designed and printed them ourselves.  It just seems easier to keep the same color scheme.

  (DIY also).   Blank inside which we hand wrote in whatever pen we could get our hands on.

  
  

    

  It's really doesn't matter.  We choose to keep it all coordinated.  It helped since we DYI some of them ourselves. 1-2 reems of the same color paper helped it coordinated.   What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
