Small Victories

We haven't had a small victories thread in a while.

Yesterday afternoon gas in my area jumped 21 cents per litre. So for those of you in the states, about a buck a gallon. I was planning on filling up but ran out of time because I had a performance to get to. Lo and behold, driving to work this morning in this wonderful small town I work in, they haven't raised the prices yet because Thursday is Senior Discount Day at the grocery store and the gas station people wanted to give the Seniors a chance to fill up before they upped their price :)

What's your latest small victory?

  • I've started paying all my bills with a credit card that earns points, then paying that card with another points-earning card and then paying that with a third pointy card and paying that card off in full. It was complicated at first but now it's freaking fantastic and since I'm super nervous about spending too much and I'm constantly checking the balances, I'm saving more money. And getting CC points galore.
What credit cards allow you to pay with other credit cards??

I call AmEx and Discover every month and have to talk to a person, but they let me over the phone.

  • Want to hear something sad? I never look at gas prices.  I do not even shop around.  To be fair we are a one car family and DH is the primary driver.  So I really do not fill up that often, but even still we have 3 gas stations in the area.  They are all about the same.  With the one that you can use your Kroger gas points being the most expensive (by you guess it, about the same amount of a discount you would get with your points).

Back in the spring I started back with Mint.com. Things were not horrible with my finances (still saving, all the bills being paid), but I knew I could do a lot better.   After the shock of how much food/going out we were spending a month I really buckled down.  Now I have even more in my savings account.   I'm eating much better, for a lot less and I've lost a few pounds.

I've thought about that app but it seemed scary to me. I'm kind of old man-ish and didn't like that it wanted my bank account info. Maybe I'll try it.

I made it to the local station too before prices jumped. Woo!! I also rarely drive, so this tank will last me almost a month

I can see that.   There are other apps or even an excel spreadsheet.  The point is to really see what you are spending your money on as a whole.   Just looking at your bank and cc statements do not always help. They do not really give you what you have spent on a certain category.

With Mint or other tracking programs I can see right now that as of today I've already spent $66 on groceries this month across all my accounts (includes paper products and liquor store).  My self-imposed budget goal is $290 (eating out is a different category).  So I know I only have $224 left for the month.  Which is great since it's the 13th and I have a pretty stocked pantry and freezer right now.  With a click or two I can then break it down even more to see how much I actually spend at the liquor store.

Back before I restarted mint I was averaging almost $400 on groceries for pretty much just me.   Yikes.  I'm not even sure on what.   By just paying attention, not wasting food, more or less meal planning based on sales I've cut back.  I still think I can do better, but I do like certain higher ticket items that I'm not willing to give up (looking at you Whole Foods Colorado free-range organic chicken)

  • We got our cars filled up before the price went up too. We heard on the news that they would rise and immediately took all of the cars to the gas station (we kinda have a lot of cars...). We got lucky because the prices went up $.60 almost immediately.

My small victory: I haven't bought lunch in 2 weeks. I've had a few free-to-me lunches but I haven't bought. It's so easy to buy near me that I'm very proud of the discipline.

  • I managed to pull my ass out of bed this morning and drag myself to work after being sent home after lunch yesterday with a case of food poisoning.

I feel 100x better this morning, but am super weak from lack of anything in my system and I really wanted to stay cozy in bed, but don't want to waste precious vacation days.

So yes my small victory is actually going to work when I should be going to work.

oh no.  I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, I feel way better this morning. Just a little terrified of food. I made FI throw out all the veggies in the house last night because I got sick from a home made salad. A salad.

And hey, Good thing out of the whole thing was that I was my goal weight this morning! hahahah. I know thats a short lived victory and attained by completely unhealthy means, but I'll bask in a day of reaching my goal weight!

Last time I had food poisoning I dropped albs immediately.  For a second or two, I thought to myself that this could be great for weight loss.  And then I remembered that it's called bulimia.

Glad you're feeling better though.  Food poisoning sucks

  • I had a victory like that too! When I went somewhere yesterday morning I saw gas had jumped about 30 cents per gallon overnight.  I knew I needed it very soon so planned to get it after work.  During the day it jumped another 40 cents per gallon and I was so mad. After H and I took the dog to a park we saw one station right by us hadn't done the 2nd jump yet so we hurried home and took all 3 cars to fill up since they needed it.  Woohoo

Because someone figured out we're trying to head to the cabin this weekend which is 3 hours away and thought we had some extra cash to spend. Obviously.
  • Weird, gas hasn't gone up here at all...yet.  Not sure where our oil comes from out here in CO though... maybe Wyoming, there's some refineries there.

My big victory today is that my alarm didn't go off thanks to a software update on my phone, so I woke up 45 minutes late, but managed to only be 15 minutes late to work.

  • I have a small gas victory today also! I will be doing an 8 hr drive this afternoon and FI called to say that our CC that rotates what we get 5% cash back on is on fuel this month! The victory in this is that it is the CC that he primarily uses and pays off so looks like he will be paying for my road trip!

  • My small victory was in the garage.  I cleaned out some tubs that were NASTY from when our drain backed up, so I can finally put them away once they dry, and I got DH to break down a big pile of cardboard boxes to go in the recycling tonight.

  • My small victory today was catching the "earlier" train. Whenever I make it, I start my day off in a better mood. It's tough to time it properly, because it's entirely dependent on traffic and not at all dependent on when I leave my house.

I also had a gas victory...I had no idea prices were rising, but I just so happened to get gas last night on the way home from work. WOO!
  • I just finished my last assignment.  DH still needs to read it over and edit/grammar check it for me before I hand it in, but the draft is finished!!  This was my last assignment for my last class this summer.  Now, I just have to do some more online discussion stuff to finish out the week and I'll officially be on summer holidays!!!  Fuck yeah!!

This might be silly but I thought you were in NYC?  I always thought people in NYC didn't have cars. Or are you outside of the city?

There are way too many cars in NYC!

My BFF lives in Brooklyn and she has one too.

My SIL lives in Brooklyn and has a car.  She is even a block from a subway station.   She works in Staten Island though ( I think?).  MIL lives in Long Island. So she uses her car a lot.

BIL lives on Long Island, but takes the train in so he has to drive to the station.

I live in two different places: NJ (my parents' house) and Brooklyn. Since I have to commute back and forth I have a car, but once I am fully in Brooklyn, I don't plan on having a car because parking to WAAAAY too much of a pain.

ETA: Parking is a pain because there are too many cars! Lots of people have cars in NYC, but parking is either painful and tedious, or really expensive.
  • I couldn't sleep (stress) so I was up from 2:30 am - 4:30 am.  I finally went back to sleep and my alarm goes off at 5:35.  Technically, if I get up at 7, I can still make it to work on time. There are some days i skip my morning workout because I just can't find the energy to do it.  Even as tired as I was, I got up, and went to my fluid running class.

I'm about to fall asleep at my desk though.

In and around NYC just sucks to drive and park in general.   I start getting anxiety as we drive north on the Jersey Turnpike from DE.    Driving through Staten Island over to the Goethals and Verrazano  Bridges.  OMG, they drive me crazy.   Goethals is so narrow.   There is always construction. Been going there 9 years now.  Still not complete.  By the time they are, they will have to start over.

It's busy at the most random times.  I've travelled over there at 2am on a Sunday and there was a 45 minute wait. Yet one time we hit it at "rush" hour and it was the one time there was no wait.

And the tolls.  OMG the tolls are fucking expensive.  We are talking like $14 (since we normally have a rental car and pay cash).   If you have EZ pass it's $9.75 for off peak and $11-something for peak.   At east they only collect leaving NJ, not leaving the city.

Aww yes. I take the Verrazano and Goethals TWICE a week. It's legitimately painful as I empty my wallet. That, plus the NJ Turnpike toll. It is the worst. Can't wait until I get a job in the city lol.
