Please be honest! Does this look tacky or cheap? What would you think if you saw this at a wedding?

Would love to hear from you all! I am thinking of purchasing a silk petal runner for my wedding. I am worried it will come across cheap because it doesn't look as full as real petals but my venue does not allow for loose petals. What do you think? Yay or nay?

  • I like this idea. I don't think it would look tacky.
  • I don't think it's tacky at all.
  • Sounds great to me.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Sorry, I have to disagree. You can ALWAYS tell when somebody uses silk flowers. There are tons of other options for aisle runners. I'm not allowed loose petals at my wedding venue either.
  • It looks cool from a distance, but you'll have to see what it looks like close up. If you think it's pretty and you like it, that's all that matters.

  • I think it looks ok, but I don't know if it's necessary.  How many pictures are you going to have of the aisle that include the ground instead of focusing in on your face and your escort's face?
  • My only suggestion is to have the guests seated to the outside of the rows instead of going up the center isle to be seated. This will avoid anyond stepping on the runners & either getting them dirty or possibly even tripping on them. To kepp people from going up the middle you'll need someone standing there or take ribbon and block off the isle.

Also you may want to get lanscaping staples to pin it into the ground so that it doesn't blow away should there be any wind. Lots of staples will work and you will be able to hide them under the petals in the runner. Make sure you have time for this, because depending on how long the runners are, it will take you 30-45 minutes to put it down & secure it making sure the landscaping staples don't show. And then probably another 10-15 minutes (or more) to clean it up depending on how careful you are about removing the landscaping staples.

  • Keep in mind if your location is windy. My concern would be them spreading, blowing or getting moved out of place from your dress or people traffic.
  • I do not think it's tacky.   I also feel like it's an unnecessary expense.  I'm also not a fan of a runners in general.  I don't see the point.  People trip on them, they get messed up.

I would just use some shepard's hooks with some flowers hanging from them.  Or just some potted plants.

My aisle was lined with plastic sand buckets and some flowers.  After the wedding those buckets were used as CP for the high top tables.  Now I do not think sand buckets are right for you.  Just saying I would try and find something that has multiple uses.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • They aren't horrible but I personally don't see the need.  Your venue is already gorgeous, and if you were planning on doing any pew decor and/or alter arrangements then the aisle runners could just be over kill.  And like PP said, besides maybe one or two pictures, how much is the aisle going to be photographed?

  • I like it! The one things that concerns me though is how it will sit on the grass and be held down. I think it would look odd if it were just sitting on top of the grass and not flush with the ground. And how will it be held down?

  • I think that if its in your budget and you like it then you should do it.  No I don't think it is tacky, to some it may be unnecessary but I think it would look great in the ceremony space you have choosen.
  • Thanks everyone. The runner would be held down with these clear hook things. they slide into the ground to secure it. I'm still on the fence about the runner. I like fuller ceremony sites so i want something going on on the ground and maybe on the outside chairs.
    Kinda like these pictures

  • My thoughts: Sure, it looks pretty. In those pictures. When people are walking you won't be able to see it anyway and be honest: are you really going to keep and display pictures of your completely empty aisle? Like, would you have that framed on your wall? I seriously doubt it.

  • It's not my cup of tea. I don't think it looks tacky, I'm just not a fan of silk flowers. I agree with PPs, it seems unnecessary. But if you like it, that's what counts.
  • Thanks ladies!!!
  • I like it and it looks good in the pictures.  I also like the idea suggested to add some potted plants.
  • I think it's really cute and will help add more decoration to the venue.  Congrats!
  • If it is windy or doesn't lay flat it could end up a mess.  Also if guests trip over it getting into the aisle it can easily get destroyed.  If the petals come apart as a result the venue would not be happy with silk petals blowing all over the place.
  • I like it, pretty unique and creates a little character in the wedding. cute.
  • Thanks everyone! I plan on getting it. No wedding guests should be entering from the middle aisle so no trip hazards!
  • I like it!  I'm going to look into maybe finding one myself.  I definitely didn't know that was a thing.

  • Am I really the only one who thinks it's silly to create such a photo op?   The guests are "forced" to enter from the sides.  Which I find silly.    Then once the bride(s)/grooms(s)/whomever goes down the aisle it will be messed up.  Especially if there is a bride(s) with a long dress that drags.

Literally the only time it will look nice is when NO ONE is around.

No you aren't the only one.  It is like when people complain about their chairs at the reception. The only time those chairs will really be seen in pictures (like as a prominent feature) is when the photog takes one picture of the room when no one is in it.  And what are the chances that that will be one of the pictures you print out, frame and hang on your wall?  Sadly most weddings are not photographed for magazines or websites which is really the point of the pictures above.

I've attended many church weddings where you could only enter the aisle from one side. I don't really see why that's such a big deal.
And really then, you could argue for having NO decorations at all. Why decorate your ceremony space? Why decorate your reception space? Why have a cake that looks nice? Just for a picture?

You could take that a step further and add that all weddings are unnecessary and "tacky" because all they require is the couple, the officiant, a license, and the legal number of witnesses and nothing else should be done to make the day important or special. In that case, why are you (generic) a member of a forum giving advice on how to plan a wedding?
  • Thanks everyone for the advice! I don't think entering from the sides is that big of deal for guests. I personally really like decor and I am not fan of bare ceremony, cocktail, or reception space. I like the pictures of the overall area before anyone gets there. I know my videographer does aerial shots so I'm sure he will get the ceremony area.  All the pictures I posted are from real weddings not advertisements so I'm assuming these brides also liked the same look. I appreciate all opinions :-)
