Ashley Madison Hackers Release Data

Well, I guess they followed through... I'm not super tech savvy so wouldn't know the first thing about looking for something on the dark web, but damn.

I know everyone discussed the prospect about a month ago, but any change of heart now that it's all out there? Personally, I'm not sorry for them (the AM users). You want to have an open relationship? Discuss it with your spouse. If they're fine with it, go for it. If they're not and you still insist on boning someone else, get divorced and go have your fun rather than waste their time.

Re: Ashley Madison Hackers Release Data

  • I'm curious what happened with that knottie whose husband was on Ashley Madison... I wonder if she has her proof now or what!

  • The news report I watched last night mentioned that since AM doesn't verify accounts (user names, click this e-mail to make sure you signed up etc.) that if someone's name pops up, they can "plausibly deny" the account by saying someone signed up under their name/e-mail.  I still don't feel too bad for them

I'm so sure that happens ALL. THE. TIME.

  • No change of heart for me on the cheaters.  I still feel bad for the spouses, especially if they are now affected financially because of someone getting a hold of the credit card #'s etc.

  • I heard yesterday it would be coming out.   I asked DH if he needed to tell me anything.   Ha.     He had never heard of the site, let alone the scandal (he isn't always up with current events).

I'm sure people use fake names, even high profile ones just to make themselves more "desirable" so-to-speak.   It will be interesting how this plays out with the average person.   It's such a cliche that high profile people have affairs it's expected they will be on the list.  It's the average family that it's really going to hurt.

  • @julieanne912 - they only posted the last 4 digits, not the whole credit card #.

@lyndausvi - apparently you can sign up with a fake name/email/profile/etc., but you have to give real info for billing. The only way you could give fake info for that would be with a pre-paid credit card or something. And they posted the billing info, so a lot of it is actually real stuff!

  • I saw on another message board this morning a link to the list of email addresses.  The amount of email addresses that were from personal businesses was crazy!  Why would you use your email address for any sort of dating or cheating website?  There were email addresses from Boeing, IMB, Harvard, Yale, Bank of America, JP Morgan, and others that I can't recall right now.

I feel no remorse for those people, unless their email addresses were "stolen" and used for the website, since as PP mentioned AM did not require confirmation from email addresses.

My thought on this is that in cases of true, consensual, open relationships, it's not about the spouse finding out - it's about everyone else.

Say someone is in an open marriage, joins Ashley Madison to meet people, and then their data is leaked. Bosses, coworkers, clients/customers, family and friends don't necessarily know about the open relationship. They will all immediately rush to judgment about the "cheater" despite the fact that the relationship is open and the "cheater" did nothing wrong.

Not necessarily saying that the cheaters shouldn't be exposed. Just pointing out that there are other implications even for the (possibly small) number of members who are in true open relationships.

Ah OK.  I had read a separate article last night that didn't mention that.  So I feel better for the spouses now.  But not really better cause uh yeah, that still really sucks for them.

  • Ehh I still don't really feel bad for them. I'm glad they didn't post the full CC #, just enough to 'verify' its theirs. I don't know how/want to go through the effort of finding the info, but I'd certainly be interested if there was anyone I knew on there.

  • I don't like it. I'm not a fan of the site, but I'm also not into internet vigilante justice.
    agreed

  • What if this were Amazon or american airlines, or some other G rated website. You don't feel bad because it's people on AM, but if it happens there it can happen to any "regular" website you frequent.

I think it's messed up to post email addresses, billing addresess, names and credit info, no matter if you agree with the site or not.

Obviously I don't care for the website and I don't feel sorry for the people that have now been "outed" as cheaters.

To the bolded - It's probably because their spouses don't have access to their work e-mails.

I'm irritated than more than 800 service members were too stupid not to use their government emails when signing up. Seriously, people? I doubt all of y'all were ASVAB waivers. Adultery can get you in a ton of trouble in the military, so you use your government email for it? Your .mil address? I mean, at least try to be smart about it.

ETA: I know this article states more than 15k were .mil or .gov... According to a news source I saw in my feed earlier, more than 800 were specifically @usmc.mil, which is my old branch of service.

At least according to speculation among my friends, a lot of the accounts, particularly some of the .mil and .gov e-mails, were spoof accounts/accounts not created for or verified by the person whose e-mail was used. Apparently Tony Blair has like 15 AM accounts. Lol.

Yeah when I heard that over 15,000 used .mil or .gov addresses I immediately thought "wow, what freaking idiots!"  You don't use your work email address for this type of thing and you especially don't use one that you are issued by the government/military.  If one really felt the need to sign up for this type of website then you create an email solely for this specific use.

But I still don't put it past some people to use these email addresses on sites like this.  Unfortunately common sense is not always used.

I don't know... while I imagine some people were trolling their friends/fellows, I doubt that would account for all of them. It probably would not count for a majority. Unfortunately, adultery is a huge issue in the military. It isn't necessarily the sort of thing you sign someone up for as a prank.

Oh it definitely doesn't account for ALL of them. But I'm seriously doubtful that all 15K of them were actually that stupid.

  • I'm hoping some good 'family values' leaders, whether they be politicians, community leaders, etc. are found in there with legit accounts; I always enjoy those awkward press conferences where they go from you should behave the way I say (and supposedly do) to "I know I made mistakes, I had a 'moment of weakness' but I'm going to seek God's help and ask that you respect our privacy through these troubling times."  :-)
Yup, I saw that article too lyndausvi. Apparently the billing addresses match up to places he owns/has lived at.

I JUST saw that! And I'm not surprised. He liked sneaking around doing horrible creepy things when he was a kid. At least in the Ashley Madison case whatever happened was consensual (presumably)

  • The guy at "whitehouse.gov" apparently had an account. Or someone claiming to be him did.

It actually happened to DH. When he got the email he forwarded it to me. I trust him completely and knew he didn't make an account. Plus, he gets wrong emails all the time. Sometimes they aren't even in English.
  • Yeah, it's not ok that people's private info is being posted. Not everyone on there is a "cheater," after all, and like PPs said, if it could happen on there, it could happen to any of us on any website.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
