Maggie0829 is valid - if you are outraged over this, what about every single other phrase involving death or dying? People say "you're killing me" all the time, is that offensive? What about "I just died when she said...."? And all the other ones Maggie mentioned?

Whether you consider it one or not, "A little piece of me died inside" is a very commonly used phrase, and it is not offensive to 99.99% of the population. For example, a little piece of me dies every time someone uses the wrong form of your/you're or their/they're/there.

OP, thank you for your apology. It is accepted, and I appreciate it. You sound like a nice lady.

While I agree with you 1000000% (not a typo) that people should be mindful of the words they use and the things they say because you never know who is listening, I feel like you need reminding that everybody's life experience is different and we cannot all conform our behavior to suit the particular sensitivities and experiences of others. Nobody knows your personal struggles and experiences, and therefore nobody can knowingly restrict their language or social behaviors to make sure you are not offended if you happen to be within earshot (or...line of vision with respect to reading on a forum). It's one thing to say the R-word, or the N-word, or make a rape joke in public, as the people who use those terms know exactly how bad they are no matter the context. The phrase used by the OP has absolutely no ill-intent behind it, and therefore it isn't fair for you to make her feel guilty for using it just because it is a trigger specific to you. The story you shared is very heartbreaking and I wish you nothing but the best, but please remember that your personal experience does not confer upon others the responsibility to alter their word choices, especially ones that are truly meant to be harmless.

Yeah I'm going to second whoever said if you are offended by the incredibly common phrase "a little part of me died inside," it's time for you to step back from the internet for a while.

I understand CMG has a unique health situation, but honestly it's asking too much for people to police their words to that extent. Parts of all of us are constantly dying, literally. We're not going to remove all death-related idioms from our vernacular. It's just not going to happen.

I'm sorry it rubbed you the wrong way but I don't think your request that people not say that phrase is reasonable or realistic, so I suggest you take a break from the internet if things like that are going to upset you.

Agreed. Although re: highlighted. No, she doesn't. Lots of people have cancer. All over the world. All over the country. Probably people on this board and we don't even know about it. Unfortunately, that is not unique. She is the only one, so far, that has asked everyone else to censor themselves for her sake rather than recognizing when she isn't emotionally in a place that can handle every day common conversational speech.

Cancer sucks, for sure. But at a certain point people, ALL people, who have shitty things they are trying to cope with and are too emotionally raw to potentially handle things that might be triggers, need to have some self-awareness and some self-preservation to know what those triggers are and remove themselves from the situation until they have the emotional capacity to handle it. And sometimes there are triggers we aren't even aware of or come out of nowhere - like someone mourning a miscarriage to find a tribute to someone's lost child in the middle of a wedding ceremony (normally a happy occasion and why we generally advise people to not do public displays like that at their weddings). But a general internet board open to the public is leaving yourself wide open for things you may not be able to handle if you're in an emotionally fragile place and it's an enter at your own risk sort of thing.

This. CMGr, I hope I can speak for most people here when I say that I truly feel for you and I hope you can push through this as you have done before. I wish you nothing but the best and for a good future and good health.

But the title of the tread isn't insensitive. If OP had said, "Oh man, I'd rather get cancer and die than go to this trainwreck of a wedding!" then yes, you'd be right to be upset. It is a common figure of speech and if it bothers you that much, you might want to take a step back. Should I get upset and angry at every poster who complains about their mother - since mine is dead? No. Should Addie get upset every time someone bitches that their husband isn't helping with much since her husband works away from home? No. Everyone here has had tough times in their lives and it's crazy to expect people to not use the word die to you, abuse to someone else, baby to another person, etc.
