Re: Where were you? - 9/11 edition

  • Yep. Every other post is ads.

I don't need to review vendors I never hired, and I certainly have never had a 5-star wedding.

  • I was in college...driving up Schooley's Mountain to the equine campus, when the planes hit. I arrived to a group of girls all standing in the parking lot, surround our old British professor who told us all to make our way back down the mountain. Campus was going into lock down (we were 30 minutes outside of NYC). We were advised to "shelter in place" so to speak. Do what we could to contact loved ones. I was only able to get a hold of 1 aunt in Missouri. She was able to relay messages back home that I was ok.
I stopped at the liquor store on the way home and picked up a 12 pack. My roomate and I spent the rest of the day drinking beer and staring at the TV. That weekend we went home to her town of East Rutherford, just outside of NYC. There's a spot along the drive where you crest a hill and the NYC skyline is laid out right in front of you. It was gone. Engulfed in smoke and dust. One of the eeriest feelings ever.

  • I was also in 9th grade and was on break between 2nd and 3rd period when this kid Alex Dow walked through the hallways saying "there's no roof on the World Trade Center!". I had no idea what he was talking about, and was picturing the Boston World Trade Center (a convention center, not a tall skyscraper). No one seemed alarmed...so I went to 3rd period Spanish class. I think we had the radio on, not the TV. Then 4th period was physics, but we got pulled out of that class early for an assembly. I remember our headmaster saying "you are safe here". I don't remember much of the rest of the day, but we didn't get released from school early. I can't remember if we tried to go back to classes as normal, or if we just watched the news.
My mom picked up me and my sister and we ate dinner in front of the TV (the only time we ever did  this in my entire childhood). I didn't personally know anyone lost in the attacks, but since the flights that hit  the WTC originated in Boston I knew lots of people who knew people that were lost.

I still get choked up when I fly out of Logan and see American flags flying over the gates from which those 2 planes departed (B32 and C19).

I've also flown out of Portland and was surprised they asked for no ID. It's a tiny airport, but the fact that in 2013 I was able to board a flight  without showing any ID made me nervous.

FWIW, I just realized the attacks were half my life ago (along with @labro, I think). Crazy, because it doesn't feel that long.

  • A few days later we found out that one of my dad's cousins was in one of the buildings and had not been found.  We went into the city October-November and her picture was on the wall with several mementos.  She is one of the ones who was never found.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I was working in Manhattan at my first real world job.  I was working on W 20th.  At about 8:45 or so I'm walking down 6th Ave and a bunch of people are pointing ( towards the towers) and running out of stores.  I didn't even look up, I was like NYC is so weird. I got close to my office building and saw a co-worker walking the opposite direction I joked with him and said we work that way.  He told me a plane hit the WTC I was going to be late for work but I saw my boss standing at the corner as well so I figured it was ok to look. I saw another plane coming by I thought it was a rescue or something and nope it hit the 2nd tower.  I freaked out and went into my office building.

I tried to just start doing work like nothing happened, but everyone was on the internet, listening to radio.  I was really freaking out. There was construction going on across the street and a bit later there was suddenly a huge puff of dust and smoke that passed by. I thought it was the construction but it was from the tower collapsing, the same thing happened when the 2nd tower collapsed.  We were being let out of work, but I was terrified and didn't know if the trains were working to go home.  So I walked (in heels) from w. 20th to w. 72nd my dad's store so at least we would be together, whether we got out of the city or not.  I was terrified to take the subway, who knew what would be attacked next.

I remember distinctly what I wore that day and I remember as I was walking, the weather was perfect and the sky was such a pretty blue.  I spent some time with my dad at his store.  We were able to get out of the city on a train around 8 at night.  I remember being so afraid being on the train.  I had nightmares for weeks after this.  The first few nights ( I was living at home again after college) my mom slept in my room with me I was having such bad nightmares. I've saved the skirt I wore that day I don't think I've worn it since actually.

    Anniversary

  • I was in high school and we sat in the history building
