Re: What does your haircut cost?

  • My hairstylist is at a salon right outside Boston and it's 50 not including tip.

  • $70 not including tips. Usually $90 total- $5 for the shampoo girl and $15 for the stylist. I only get it cut twice a year.
  • Former New Hampshirite here, that seems about average for NH cut/blow dry. I used to go to a salon in Manchester. I can see Concord being a bit cheaper. I moved to NYC 10 years ago, and paid nearly $90 for a cut and blow dry, then moved to a salon in NJ and paid $50 (all before tip). I'm now in Atlanta and pay roughly $45 before tip. Enjoy the NH prices - I miss them!
  • $17, $22 if I want the shampoo. I've been going to the same HairMaster for years and four of the stylists have learned how to cut my quick-growing hair. I show up every other month. Rarely spend more than 15 minutes. Used to have a fabulous stylist who'd finish with a 10 minute head/neck massage. I miss her.
  • Is great clips running a special? If so, $5.99. Boom.

  • I go to an Aveda salon and see the owner (I've followed her for years now, she's awesome). Its $50 for wash, cut, and style but I tend to do something crazy with my hair colour in addition. Usually runs me $120ish before tip. This is in Ontario in a city of ~115,000 people.
  • @shessocold UGH isnt that "long hair" charge bs? My long hair hides mistakes much better than a pixie cut! That's why I stopped going to bubbles (chain on the east coast). Now I pay 180 for cut, partial highlights and style.

  • I think the general over-pricing for women's hair cuts, as well as the silly extra fee for long hair are in part because women get their hair cut fairly infrequently (especially if it's long), and because, let's face it, we're willing to shell out ridiculous quantities of cash and they'll charge whatever the market will pay. DH gets his hair cut at the local barber shop for $10. His hair is WAY more challenging to cut well than mine is, but I pay 5 times as much. This seems totally crazy but I only get my hair cut twice a year and he goes every 4 weeks, so in the end the two places earn about the same amount per customer per year.

Totally agree with that! I've trimmed lots of people's hair including my own and H's. It takes me a couple minutes to trim mine or a girl friend's hair. It takes a lot more work/focus/effort to cut H's hair. Plus when hair is that short, one little mess-up is super noticeable.

However I'm not a pro, so take that with a grain of salt. I guess if you were trimming a guy's hair with clippers it takes about 10 seconds, but most guys I know don't do clippers.

Haha, DH is sooooooo picky about his hair cut. It has to be JUST the right length, shorter on the sides, a bit longer on top. He has really thick and wavy hair with cowlicks but it's thinning on top (a lot - don't tell him I said that) and that makes it even harder to get right. My hair, on the other hand, is fine and straight - three snips and it's done, and even when they put in long layers (which I usually ask for) it doesn't take long at all. It usually takes most stylists 10 minutes to cut, and 5 minutes to blow-dry my hair.
  • So one time I decided to take a gamble with a hair salon for my cut and color. It was going to be about $100 in DFW area. I ended up with hot pink hair. To "salvage" it, the sylist dyed it brown which made it turn purple. I had a job fair that week. I ended up going to a Bumble and Bumble salon for $200 to cut/color and he did a great job, but he would turn my entire head platinum, like my picture. I didn't mind it, but I had to go a lot more frequently or end up with skunk roots from my naturally dark blond hair.

My current stylist tried to get me to come to him for 6 months and I finally did. He cut me a deal and lets me pay the same $200 instead of his normal $265 for cut/color. I don't even tell him what I want. I just sit down and he makes my hair beautiful. He used to be a blond specialist at Neiman's, but decided he wanted to own his own salon. He also did my wedding updo trial and rocked it. I see him quarterly and my hair never looks super grown out now.
  • wash, cut and blow dry/style is $50 + tip (salon).  I get highlights twice a year and that is $120 (w/ a wash, cut, blow dry as well)

  • $9.  Cosmetology school :)  I have no idea what salons charge around here since I haven't been to one in a long time.

  • Lately I've been cutting my own hair, so.... $0!

  • Mine's usually $60 for a wash and cut. They'll kind of dry it so you don't leave with a sopping wet head, but no blow out/style or anything.
  • @DallasBtoBe that seems a bit pricey for no blow out or anything. Is it someone you are super attached to? I think there are several salons in the uptown area that have about the same prices and blow dry.

Definitely not super attached to this place! I like it, but I only go 2-3 times a year. I'll check out some Uptown salons -- I guess I just assumed they would be higher! Thanks!
  • Used to be $60 for wash, cut, and color, but now it's just $18 for the wash & cut at the same place.  I don't get a blowdry or style, and I don't get color anymore since I use henna.

  • I get mine cut for free (Step-mom is a hairdresser) but when I paid for my haircuts, I pay anywhere from $60-$100 for just a cut.

@redheadbride15  My life is *SO* much better up here.  Being in the awesome city that San Francisco is for a week made me appreciate and yearn for the peace of NH. Even though our house is unfinished and we're living in sawdust paradise :)
  • In NYC I usually paid $100 for just a cut.  Color, highlights and blow dry were $250

In Massachusetts I find it much  less expensive.  $50 for a cut.  Highlight and color $50 combined

  • This topic gives me anxiety! My hair is not complicated but it seems to be difficult to find someone to cut and not butcher curly hair! Thanks to some terrible experiences I went a year without a trim before finding a new lady in the area I moved to and I love her! My hair is waist length and with how curly it is I can't do shorter layers, she just gets it. I also most of the time have straight across bangs but am growing them out for the wedding. She charges me $40 (that is with tip) for a cut, wash, style and that includes the bangs, she also does my bang trims for free in between so I tip her for those.

    I'm in northern Idaho.

  • I pay $90 for cut and color then give her a $20 tip because she does such a great job. I go every 8 weeks to get both.
