Someone just told me that giardinera is a Chicago thing. That other places don't have it. Is this true? Do you have it in your grocery store or as an option on your pizza?

I know other places have stupid hot dogs and bad popcorn and no beefs but this is very upsetting to me.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it in a grocery store here in CO (like in the canned/jarred food section by pickles) but it's definitely not something you can get at your average pizza place here... definitely a Chicago thing in that regard. I had never even heard of it before I moved to Chicago... grew up in central CA.

I live in Indy and can buy giardinera in my grocery. I think it is any Italian thing but not sure.

Well, you can get it in Chicago style pizza places, but not typically around here. I don't know about the grocery store, you can probably get it though.

Funny story, they stopped selling my favorite kind of jelly here, so last summer when I was in Chicago I found it, and traveled home with 8 jars of jelly in my suitcase. This is just a specific smucker's flavor, not anything crazy!

It sounds gross and weird but it's so good. My dad buys the good shit from an Italian deli by the gallon.

Definitely a Chicago thing. I have family in Chicago that I visit frequently so I know what it is and I've seen how frequently it is used out there. I've lived or regularly visited most other regions of the country at some point in my life, and I've never seen it around to the extent that I've seen it in Chicago. Perhaps you could find it at a Chicago pizza place or a specialty Italian shop. But as an option in most pizza places or in the fridges of most homes? Sadly nope.

Ditto this. I'm in the new york city area (work in the city, live in jersey). I mean, it might be in supermarkets, but I had to google it. Now I'm curious and want to check.

I have a small jar in my fridge that I picked up at a local grocery store. . . I think it's by the pickles and olives.

I used to work at a plain old regular New York pizzeria and we went through it by the gallon jug, putting it on our house salad. I used to love it!

I'm on Long Island, New York btw

We have them here in Indy I think but I always assumed it was because of ex-Chicago people and I only notice it at Chicago type of restaurants/pizza places but just all over

Ah ok I just ask because when my grandma was on hospice, she kept asking for boysenberry jam on her toast and it was pretty much impossible to find! I'm thinking my two aunts who were helping to care for her would have packed in their suitcase too if they found it elsewhere.

Having grown up around Chicago, would it shock you to know I only heard of it in the last few years? I think part of the problem is that it's pronounced like "jar-don-air" so if I'd heard it, I never matched it with "giardinera" on a menu.

You can get it in the grocery stores, but it's def. just a mass produced thing. Not a local item. I'm in Arizona.

Not to derail the OP, but my husband was gifted a special hot sauce called Aardvark Secret Hot Sauce. He became immediately addicted to it. Apparently it is only available in Oregon, which is a far cry from Chicago. Looks like we will be ordering it in massive quantities to justify the shipping!

I also always assumed the giardinera was a national garnish. I'm pretty sure our Subway offers it for sandwiches, so I assumed all chains did the same.

Yes, Aardvark is a very big thing in Portland and the rest of Oregon. There are actually three varieties: a hot sauce, a black bean sauce, and a marinade. All of them are fabulous. I have a friend who moved to Australia, and I ship bottles to her (and she buys them when she comes to visit). It's also on the tables at most local (non-chain) restaurants. But you're right, I'm almost certain you won't find it in grocery stores outside of Oregon - hell, I can't find it at some grocery stores in Portland, even...
