Comforters/ Duvets

Here in New England winters, I'm always cold and I sleep with flannel pants, socks, a sweatshirt, and two comforters (cheapy cotton fill). H decided it would be worth it for us to "splurge" on a nice down comforter since they are supposed to be so much warmer. So I'm on the hunt....I've been reading all about fill counts, fill weights, reviews. I've narrowed down a million website to what appears the best quality and pricing to L.L.Bean.

Does anyone have one they use/ love/ would recommend? Do you use the size mattress you have or larger? I noticed a reviewer said she uses a K on a Q mattress and that sounds kind of amazing so I'm considering doing that.

Also I have never used a duvet cover before. I'm finding that even though the comforter says 88x94 the majority of covers are saying 90x90. Is that normal, is it supposed to be a little bit "scrunched" in the cover or do I need to track down the exact right size?

Thanks!!

Re: Comforters/ Duvets

  • I have a comforter and duvet.   I bought them so long ago I have no idea that the counts are.   We got the duvet from Pottery Barn.

We have a king bed and a king duvet.   That said, DH and I have separate blankets, so the entire duvet is on my side.

We do this in the winter too!  I need far more blankets than DH.

I think 90 by 90 is small for a king duvet.  I think mine is 108 by 90.  I got my down comforter from target... 2 of them actually, a light warmth and a heavy.

  • I'm not sure about counts, etc. but I would say definitely get a size up from what your mattress is. The one I have is technically the same size as the mattress but it doesn't hang down a whole lot on the sides.

Ikea!  They have the best prices for down duvets and they have different thicknesses.  We have a thicker one that we use in the winter, and a thinner one for the rest of the year.  As for the covers, they come from various places.  One guest room is from Ikea, the other from West Elm, and I got ours on Jossandmain.com but it's from a discontinued Nautica line that used to be sold at Bed Bath and Beyond.

ETA:  When we had a queen size bed we used a King size duvet.  Now we have a King though so there's no sizing up, wish we could though.

Another ETA (I should really read the OP better):  Yes, you want your cover to be a bit larger than the duvet itself, since you don't want it to be super snug.  Also look for covers with ties in the corners so you can tie the duvet into it so it moves around less.

It's bliss.  No fighting for covers with DH and because we are traveling, no bulldog sleeping with me.   Often it's the best night sleeps I get.

  • I second the Ikea I have a duvet from there it is nice, just make sure the hard buttons are at the bottom, FI always forgets this, and I get trapped in the middle of the Duvet somehow.. also they have a better description then the weights, they have "cool sleeper" "warm sleeper" and what ever. mine is old and small for the Q size bed we upgraded to recently I am thinking of getting a larger one from there. I know the duvet was like $20 and the comforter was reasonable too..

I also have the comforter to my self since he is fine with the quilt we use in the summer. he usually tries to find me in the morning, for a before we actually have to get up snuggle.. I know gross.. but in the winter he says i am wrapped up so tight like a burrito that he never can find me..

  • I think so far my favorite duvet insert has been from the Charter Club brand. It's got these amazing little fabric tabs on the corners of the duvet so you can tie the corners of the duvet cover to it (no shifty around or lumping)! It was pretty affordable thanks to a 50% off sale at Macy's too.

Obviously GA winter =/= Boston. I have a Level 2 and a Level 4 weight duvet. The level 2 is great year round, and maybe sometimes a little too warm in the summer. The level 4 is awesome in the winter (My H thinks he's melting though, too hot for him). I think they even sell up to level 5 weights? You might prefer that for a winter duvet. Or just get a recommended all-season one and add blankets as needed.

All of my duvet covers have come from Pottery Barn - price wise, meh, sometimes you can get them on a good sale, but I love all of their patterns!

  • I don't recall where my comforter is from, but if you have a queen bed, I do recommend getting a king comforter and duvet. It hangs down a little more on the sides and looks a little nicer in my opinion.

And, love these! There are usually ties in duvets, but I think the clips work better to hold it in place. They're available all over. https://m.bedbathandbeyond.com/m/product/comforter-clips-set-of-4/1010313465
  • @labro Thanks! Last time we stayed at a Westin I remember seeing a pamphlet that you can buy their bedding, which was sooo comfy. So I looked on their website and the prices actually aren't that bad but it said it's stuffed with 25 ounces of down. That's why I've been looking at the weights, because the LLBean ones are 60 ounces! So almost 3 times the actually filling which sounds amazing. I did a generic google search that lead me to Pottery Barn earlier today and I was definitely loving their patterns.

@ryanandjoe4 The Ikea ones are tiny for some reason. The comforter I'm eyeing is 108x96 and all the duvet covers that I like on Ikea ony go up to 102x86. Super weird.

  • I LOVE duvets!!!

Yes, size up for your bed. We have a queen duvet on a full-sized bed. I'd do a king for a queen bed. Sooooooo cozy!

I love the ones that L.L.Bean makes, and they're very New England! They have at least 3 different styles based on the way that the fabric is stitched, and each of these also has different weight/fill count options ("warm" or "warmer"). Definitely pay attention to fill weight.

I think this is the one we have (fill weight is 35 ounces on a queen, 44oz on a king). It is still really, really warm. Perhaps even a little too warm, but I sleep hot. I think there is no reason to go for the 60oz fill unless you like to keep your thermostat at 50.

  • I love my comforter!

I believe it's a queen, it's natural down, and it ws the highest warmth rating at BB&B.  I bougt my duvet there as well.

"Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends time and space."

  • We don't have a comforter on our bed, but we have a number of over-sized quilts. We have a king bed, and the quilts all hang over on all sides. Also, H is a blanket hoarder, so the number of blankets we have allow him to steal one without me freezing.

I definitely recommend sizing up, whatever type of blanket you have.

  • Thanks! I ended up going with a Macy's one, and West Elm duvet cover. Can't wait to get them delivered!

  • We have a very heavy down duvet from my parents, but it's a queen sized and with our queen bed and two bodies and the dog, the blanket doesn't reach enough over the sides :(

We got the duvet cover from Ikea. I think they're pretty universal.

H and I sleep on a double regularly. So do my parents, they have their entire lives. Although we'd all like something a bit bigger.

H and I slept on a twin the first few months of marriage. We were dead broke and only had a twin size air mattress. Lots of close cuddling!

I have no opinions on blankets except definitely size up. H and I have numerous gorgeous quilts from my professional quilter grandmother, and the double quilts definitely feel small on our double bed. We're always tugging the quilts to get more. We're using a queen quilt right now, and it's about perfect.

I commend you for the fact that you are still married and sleep on double. FI and I spent about a month on one and I said NOPE we're done with this and moved in another bed, we are small people, weigh 250lbs together but I need my space! We have a king bed and I got the comforter from BB&B, I also put flannel sheets on in the winter and have a king size fuzzy blanket that goes under the comforter. The dog also sleeps under the covers so she's like my little heater that I stick my feet under. We used to have a duvet and I can't stand stuffing them so I just get our comforter dry cleaned every month, it's worth the money to me.

  • For "stuffing" the cover... here's what you do.  Turn it inside out, and lay flat on the bed.  Then lay the duvet on top of it, tie the corners (if you have ties).  Then go to the end that's open, and crawl in there (sometimes this works better w/ 2 people) and grab both corners and just start pulling them out.  The whole thing will turn itself right side out as you pull the corners out and voila, you have a perfectly stuffed duvet :)

I'm going to have to try one of these methods! I have a duvet on one of the spare beds so maybe I'll master this instead of getting rid of it and buying new bedding!

WHAT! I have been doing it all wrong for soo long! I was doing it the way she started the video with.. and mine doesn't have ties I wish it did, but they are there why wouldn't you use them to keep it in the cover better and not lose the corners, but maybe it was because she wanted to show it would work with out the corners tied together..
