Here in New England winters, I'm always cold and I sleep with flannel pants, socks, a sweatshirt, and two comforters (cheapy cotton fill). H decided it would be worth it for us to "splurge" on a nice down comforter since they are supposed to be so much warmer. So I'm on the hunt....I've been reading all about fill counts, fill weights, reviews. I've narrowed down a million website to what appears the best quality and pricing to L.L.Bean.
Does anyone have one they use/ love/ would recommend? Do you use the size mattress you have or larger? I noticed a reviewer said she uses a K on a Q mattress and that sounds kind of amazing so I'm considering doing that.
Also I have never used a duvet cover before. I'm finding that even though the comforter says 88x94 the majority of covers are saying 90x90. Is that normal, is it supposed to be a little bit "scrunched" in the cover or do I need to track down the exact right size?
Thanks!!
Re: Comforters/ Duvets
We do this in the winter too! I need far more blankets than DH.
I think 90 by 90 is small for a king duvet. I think mine is 108 by 90. I got my down comforter from target... 2 of them actually, a light warmth and a heavy.
Oh yea those were the Q sizes, sorry!
I'm so doing this the next time H and I have a room with two beds. I don't know why I never thought of that before.
I also have the comforter to my self since he is fine with the quilt we use in the summer. he usually tries to find me in the morning, for a before we actually have to get up snuggle.. I know gross.. but in the winter he says i am wrapped up so tight like a burrito that he never can find me..

And, love these! There are usually ties in duvets, but I think the clips work better to hold it in place. They're available all over. https://m.bedbathandbeyond.com/m/product/comforter-clips-set-of-4/1010313465
@labro Thanks! Last time we stayed at a Westin I remember seeing a pamphlet that you can buy their bedding, which was sooo comfy. So I looked on their website and the prices actually aren't that bad but it said it's stuffed with 25 ounces of down. That's why I've been looking at the weights, because the LLBean ones are 60 ounces! So almost 3 times the actually filling which sounds amazing. I did a generic google search that lead me to Pottery Barn earlier today and I was definitely loving their patterns.
@ryanandjoe4 The Ikea ones are tiny for some reason. The comforter I'm eyeing is 108x96 and all the duvet covers that I like on Ikea ony go up to 102x86. Super weird.
Yes, size up for your bed. We have a queen duvet on a full-sized bed. I'd do a king for a queen bed. Sooooooo cozy!
I love the ones that L.L.Bean makes, and they're very New England! They have at least 3 different styles based on the way that the fabric is stitched, and each of these also has different weight/fill count options ("warm" or "warmer"). Definitely pay attention to fill weight.
I think this is the one we have (fill weight is 35 ounces on a queen, 44oz on a king). It is still really, really warm. Perhaps even a little too warm, but I sleep hot. I think there is no reason to go for the 60oz fill unless you like to keep your thermostat at 50.

I believe it's a queen, it's natural down, and it ws the highest warmth rating at BB&B. I bougt my duvet there as well.

I definitely recommend sizing up, whatever type of blanket you have.
Thanks! I ended up going with a Macy's one, and West Elm duvet cover. Can't wait to get them delivered!
I love mine, my FI was at a football game late last night, and I couldnt get warm so I got lost in mine for the first time this season!

H and I sleep on a double regularly. So do my parents, they have their entire lives. Although we'd all like something a bit bigger.
H and I slept on a twin the first few months of marriage. We were dead broke and only had a twin size air mattress. Lots of close cuddling!
I have no opinions on blankets except definitely size up. H and I have numerous gorgeous quilts from my professional quilter grandmother, and the double quilts definitely feel small on our double bed. We're always tugging the quilts to get more. We're using a queen quilt right now, and it's about perfect.

Noooo!!! Burrito method MAGIC! I still don't even understand how it works, but it does!

That's so funny- I've never owned a duvet before so before I bought this one I was watching all the youtube videos on the burrito method! haha
WHAT! I have been doing it all wrong for soo long! I was doing it the way she started the video with.. and mine doesn't have ties I wish it did, but they are there why wouldn't you use them to keep it in the cover better and not lose the corners, but maybe it was because she wanted to show it would work with out the corners tied together..
