How do I delay my period?

Hello ladies! I was wondering if anyone had any natural remedies to help delay a period? I am scheduled to start the day of my wedding. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't the first day, but I am always in SO much pain and look awful on the first day of my menstrual cycle. I am dreading to feel that way on the day of my wedding and really want to delay it. Does anyone have any methods to do this without the use of birth control? Thank you!!

Re: How do I delay my period?

  • I only know how to do that with birth control...and if you do hear of a natural remedy, do you have a month before your wedding to test it out and make sure it works for you?

If it were me, I would call my OB/GYN / midwife tomorrow and ask.

  • The only thing I have ever known to work would be high amounts of stress. Granted, that affects the body in other negative ways...

  • The only way to deliberately time your period is hormonal BC pills. Which, if you are less than two months out is not an option anyway. And unless your period comes like absolute clockwork, you have no way of knowing your wedding day will be the first day. Likely the stress of thinking about it will make you start early.

    The only way to
naturally delay your period is to get pregnant or be breastfeeding constantly. You need the synthetic hormones to trick your body to delay your period.

  • This is something to discuss with a doctor.  S/he can possibly prescribe something that can adjust your period.  But we're not qualified to help you other than advising you to discuss this with a doctor.
  • Mine was scheduled for my wedding too.  My OBGYN said really the only tried and true way to keep it from coming is to go on BC without the placebo.  I'm on NuvaRing now, and will just switch it every three weeks instead of taking a week break.

I think the parsley plan is definitely the way to go.  Let me know how that works.
I was just about to tell OP to shove some herbs and shit up there. Glad someone else had the same thought.

  • Pre-BCP mine got delayed every time I travel. Any chance you are taking a flight between now and then?

    Otherwise, parsley.

Or the thought you may be pregnant ALWAYS delays periods. Significantly. Even if that is physically impossible according to some girlfriends. So just tell yourself you might be and stress yourself out and it will be late!
  • Just a note that not even skipping the placebo/being on hormonal BCP guarantees everyone controlf. I tried skipping the placebo pills a few months before my wedding and still had my period that month, PLUS it lasted for almost 3 weeks. My body did not take kindly to skipping the placebo pills.

Plus, even though I was on BCP through my wedding and didn't do anything weird after skipping the placebo pills 3 months earlier, I still started my period 5 days late due to stress. So instead of starting 11 days before my wedding, I started 6 days before. The next month, I started my period on Monday of Week 3 of my pill pack, and continued for two weeks until I started Week 1 of the next pack. The major stress of the wedding and honeymoon just played havoc with my system.

The point of all that is to drive home the idea that what works for some people may not work for you. Don't rely on what strangers on the internet tell you and talk to your doctor.

Hi! I'm on the same position as you except my worst day is usually day 2 and guess what. Day two will be my wedding day! I would really discourage you from messing up your hormones. The only time external factors can actually have an impact on your period date is in the first part of your cycle, prior to ovulation (the follicular phase). High stress activities (changing up your workout, traveling, getting minimal sleep, diet change or weight loss) during the follicular phase can delay your period. Nothing will work once you've ovulated since the luteal phase is a constant in each of your menstrual cycles. I would recommend reading Takinng Charge of your Fertility - stick to the chapter on menstrual cycles since I imagine you are short on time. That will help you at least have a better understanding and you may be able to do something or at least be prepared and know exactly when your period begins. If you chart and take your temperatures, you will also be able to pinpoint within 24 hours before your period will begin which can be helpful. Again, may be late for you if you haven't been charting in preparation for your wedding day. Good luck and I hope it's delayed naturally!
  • littlemushroom Same thing happened to me when I tried to just take the next month's pack. It was awful. OP if you are going to try that be careful and test it out to see how you react to it first.

Whenever I think I might be pregnant my period is always delayed until I work up the courage to take a pregnancy test. Then I get it the next day every time.

  • @littlemushroom That's why I'm on NuvaRing and not a pill pack.  The pill pack I bled right through, but I've had success with not bleeding through the ring before, so fingers crossed it works!

I love the nuvaring.  I skipped my last period because it was scheduled to come the week FH was back home after a week of being gone. We don't have the sex (much) when I'm bleeding, so I chose sex over bleeding.  Result was that this month my period came a couple days early.  Aggravating, but not dire.
  • Seconding the suggestions to call your OBGYN (or your primary care doctor, if you don't have an OBGYN currently).

Messing around with hormones can get, well, messy, and it's safest to do that with medical advice (and with the supervision of a doctor who knows what you were doing if something comes up later). If there's something your doctor is able to do or suggest, they'll probably be very helpful. I had to see my doctor for a lost voice right before my wedding, and while there was only so much she could do, she did prescribe an antibiotic ASAP (instead of waiting 3 days for test results) because she understood the problem it could create for the wedding.
  • You really should talk to a doctor about this.  It doesn't necessarily need to be an OB/GYN or your PCP.    I have had much more success controlling my cycles by using a chiropractor instead of my GYN.  Chiropractors tend to be able to make more natural recommendations. Since that is what you were looking for, this may be a safer bet.  Your doctors are able to help you make the right decision for you.
  • I'd tall to a doctor.

I'm trying to speed mine up so I can get it before the wedding. I've read dong quai, exercise, sex, and raspberry leaf tea speeds it up.

Not sure if there's any truth to that, but I've been taking dong quai supplements because it's supposed to help with cramps, I have no idea if it'll actually make my period come sooner. It'll be nice if it does.

  • Like they said, try hormonal birth control pills. You'll have to see a GYN for that but it shouldn't be too hard to do. For me, after the first month, I was able to track my periods and know when they would start (after years of irregularity and sometimes going three months between periods). That being said, everyone is different so you might not take to the pill as fast. If you go that route, you'd probably need to start several months in advanced.
  • I was going to suggest pregnancy, which has already been suggested...

so now I'm going to suggest you get one of those diva cups, which apparently are awesome and need to be changed less than a tampon. Get it early and see how it works for you. Maybe you can make it through the ceremony, freshen up, and then through the reception?

I understand your concern isn't with bleeding as much as it seems other symptoms...Maybe drink a lot of water, eat well- you'll feel healthier and look better overall?

  • I have tried to delay my period numerous times.  Skipping the placebo of my birth control pills caused breakthrough bleeding for the entire time, months.  Obviously ask your doc.... what seems to have worked for me is changing when I start my birth control pills.  After skipping the placebo, starting the next month changed my schedule.  Keep in mind if you are not on birth control and don't want to get pregnant, use a different kind of birth control.  Hope this makes sense :)

I am on the pills that are every three months, and it takes some like 6 months to not at bleeding every month. it was only a few months for me, but something to keep in mind if your trying to use the skipping the non active pills..
