October/November Honeymoon?

FI and I are getting married in late October or early November of next year. We are starting to think about the honeymoon but don't know where to start with locations. We will have a relatively small budget, which means we'll probably need to stay in North America. I was thinking maybe going to see the leaves in the Northeast, but I think that our timing would be too late for that. I don't like the beach, but we do like outdoorsy activities. Any suggestions?

  • Where are you traveling from? What is your budget? Can you fly, or are you planning on driving somewhere?

Key West is fun - not beachy
    New Orleans
Smoky Mountains - TN or NC
    Poconos
    Catskills in NY
Vermont - lots of options. It would be passed leaf season though
    San Fran/Napa

We are in Alabama. We could fly, I just don't think we'd be able to afford tickets to anywhere outside of North America.

Your suggestions are great! I'll be looking into those.

October/November is bargain season for cruises sailing out of Florida.  You can get a fantastic deal on a cruise where the food is already paid for, and on board entertainment is included.  You don't need a passport.  Read my cruise tips on the sticky above.  Cruises are actually cheaper than staying on land, and you could drive to Florida.
It is too early to book for next year.  About 6 months out is a good time to look for a bargain.
Suggested cruise destinations - St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Bahamas; or Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Cozumel, Mexico.  Lots of stuff to do on these islands.

Actually, there are some pretty good deals out there, now.  Here are some examples from my favorite travel site.  You have to sign up on it, but they won't bother you.

Many of these cruises have offers like free drinks, or cruise credit which you can use towards paying your tips.  Many of the cruises feature a day on their private beach in the DR or the Bahamas, but if you really hate the beach, you can relax onboard ship and do something else.

What is your budget?  There are cheaper, shorter cruises.

  • I vote Gatlinburg. You guys can get a snuggly cabin for a good price and there's plenty of hiking.

You will need a passport if you take a cruise to any of the listed spots- just FYI!

Pretty sure if you're on a closed loop cruise (one that begins and ends from the same US port), you do NOT need a passport.

Cruises that leave from the USA and return to the USA do not require passports.  Your travel agent (You should use one!) can help you with this.  Don't forget trip insurance!  It is a MUST HAVE!
