False lashes

WHO WEARS THESE THINGS??????

1920's/Great Gatsby themed work Christmas party tonight. I am following this makeup tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_iMr-yOUbo

I got a pair of false lashes in an Ipsy bag once and haven't bothered with them but since they were in the tutorial I figured I'd try them. Holy crap they are itchy and feel soooo conspicuous! They look fine but my perception of them is of big flappy, scratchy wings on my face.

We're staying in the hotel tonight for some romance ;) and the first thing I plan to do when we come back up to the room is rip these damn things off!

Re: False lashes

  • Oh and they are butting up against my glasses frames. They might get ripped off before we go downstairs.
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • hehe.

I've never tried them.  Although I have pretty full, dark lashes to begin with.

    Have fun tonight.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I've used them on occasion.  I prefer the individual sets, just on the outside lashes.  It's take a bit longer to put them all in, but I find they're easier to apply than the large strip.

  • I used to wear them on stage and while performing.  They are a pain.  I used to remove them as soon as I could.

  • If a pro applies them, the full sets don't bug me.  But if I'm putting them on, I can only manage the individual ones.

Your hair is looking great!  Mine is too long to fake short now, and DF just has too much hair.

Thank you so much! My hair is just past waist length so unless you're growing to knee length or terminal I think you could do it too! I followed this tutorial -

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSt8_CezBIs

It was SUPER DUPER EASY!!!! It literally took maybe 4-5 minutes. The biggest things I did to make it work for my long hair were 1) to basically fold it in half first and tuck the ends inside the band before I started rolling, AND 2) use my magic product of Goody Spin Pins! They are the best, like bobby pins with 'roid rage. I used two and stuck them into either side of the roll. Everything stayed nice and neat!

Haha I just realized I said above, "It ain't easy" in direct contradiction to the comment in the previous paragraph. I think I was just using a turn of phrase because it actually was a very easy tutorial to follow and it worked really well for me. :)

Surprisingly, I got slightly used to them during the party. I was happy to yank them off first thing when we got back, though! I think I might try the individual ones next time because I did like the look.

  • Yeah, my hair is almost knee length, plus fairly thick. If I roll it up, it starts looking off around collarbone or so. I wonder if it's more the thickness as DF was an epic fail at waist length because I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. He's got a massive ton of thick, dense hair.

I'm soooooo jealous of you. I have never met another "official" longhair outside of long hair communities! And yes, I absolutely can see why this trick would not work for you, haha!

My FH also has long hair! You can't tell how long it is above because of the ponytail but it's just hitting BSL (you know, if he wore a bra!). His is pretty thick too, nice and wavy. I love that your fiancé has long hair too! :)

  • Well you look beautiful!

I've never worn them myself- they look too tricky for me ;). If I did get them, I think I'd go professional. They do look great on people...
  • I'm a big fan of false lashes, but I'm fairly seasoned when it comes to makeup (hair is a totally different story. I basically know how to flat iron it and put it in a ponytail. That's it). I find that as long as you practice and find a technique that works for you, you won't even feel them on you. But yes, they can certainly be tricky.

You actually inspired me to start collecting videos and whatnot for a tutorial sticky in Wedding Hair and Makeup :p

  • Hey, I don't know how to flat iron my hair.  It's always been long enough that putting it up was easiest once I took control over my hair.  Need a tutorial on that maybe.
  • They turned out great! I love wearing them, but they feel SO good to take off. I actually prefer the full lash vs the individuals.

And hooray for more long hairs! I'm technically a former... I was hip+ but the ends were bleach damaged. So I chopped it off, and now I'm apl-bsl.

It's basically a community of women and men who keep and prefer (and obsess over... and take pride in... etc. etc. haha) a long hairstyle. We don't have a national club or anything (as far as I know!) but we like online forums. You can check out one of the most popular forums here - http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/forum.php.

Most of us are varying degrees of anti-trim - or at least the conventional "trim every six weeks" advice - and we very, very rarely cut, usually only due to damage as teddy said. Generally speaking, the longer the better, although once you get to waist- and hip-length a lot of longhairs will stop growing because the level of work escalates exponentially past that length.

There's soooo many things you can get into, different styles of washing (or not washing), learning about a million different braids, learning how to protect your hair from the elements and heat and chlorine pools and pillowcases haha, etc. Moisture treatments, doing your own trimming, "spot trimming," henna dyeing, etc.

How to put this? All longhairs have long hair, but not everyone who has long hair is a longhair. Haha.

There is official long hair communities? I feel left out. But then whenever my hair gets to waist length or close I cut It off and donate it to Wigs For Kids. I've donated 6 times. I'm just past shoulder length and really missing my long hair.

Yes! It was soooo satisfying, like taking off your bra, or a pair of heavy earrings.

You can still be a longhair at BSL. It's all in the attitude. We accept you. ;)

  • Cool.  I've been about waist length, but it's a bit shorter now.  My hair is so thick that it gets too heavy to do anything with if it's too long.  I chopped it to about armpit level and it was the first time I felt I looked my age, so I grew it back out.  Much happier again

This....is very interesting. My hair is about waist-length and I do love it, but I never thought of a "club" kinda thing. The bolded in interesting to me too. I never thought that much about my hair. Just wash it, dry it, try to keep it out of my food, other people's food, car windows, etc.

Interesting, because the majority of people I have seen with very long hair, like you describe, have very damaged hair.  Like they'd need to get a cut to their shoulders or collarbones to clear off all the damage.

So how do you keep your hair from looking ratty and getting damaged if you aren't taking care of split ends regularly?

IMO if you're actively growing your hair (or maintaining a long length) and you have a passion for long hair generally, I count you as a longhair. Lots of people don't know about the forums and tricks and stuff.

The only things I've really gotten into in the past are moisture treatments and henna. I don't henna anymore because my hair is too dark to take up the color and while henna has other benefits, it's too much upkeep if I'm not going to get the lovely red color. (I kinda can't wait to start turning gray, though, bc then I will be a henna freak.)

Everything's optional, tbh. I don't wear that many protective styles because, well, I love my hair and I want to enjoy it. Lots of longhairs disagree with me and will wear their hair only in buns and braids to protect the ends. To me - what's the point of growing it long if you can't enjoy it? But the trade off is damage, which means more trims, which means it takes longer to grow. Eh, it's a process.  :#

I'm a long hair at heart, and typically I have apl or longer hair, but I get bored with the same look all the time, and since I refuse to dye it blonde, the only thing I can really do to change it up is to cut it. ;-)  I've already been every shade and permutation of almost black through fire engine red.

Currently I'm rocking a lob, but I'll be growing my hair out again soon.  Good to know about these long hair forums because I have fine hair and I'm prone to split ends and fly aways, so I will be checking these sites out for tips and product suggestions!

ETA: I love fake eyelashes!  I have only used full sets, but I'd like to try the individual lashes at some point.  AS long as your glue hasn't shit the bed and you let it sit on your lashes for at least 30sec, rolling the lashes into a U shape back and forth with your fingers while the glue dries, application should be a snap!

I'll be stalking these forums for sure. My hair has four styles - down, ponytail, side braid and what I call a bouffant - a super ass messy ass bun that does not look good. I don't own a curling iron or a flat iron.

And I've always wanted advice on my greasy ass roots but dry ass ends.

Yeah - I need to try more dry shampoo brands. Tried two and didn't like 'em. I stopped using conditioner on my roots and that's helped too.

Also, try not using shampoo on your ends. If you shampoo your roots, the suds will work down and get any product you may have out of your hair. It's worked with my hair.

So how do you keep your hair from looking ratty and getting damaged if you aren't taking care of split ends regularly?
Split ends aren't a foregone conclusion; I rarely get them myself although I do trim about an inch per year. A lot of longhairs teach themselves to cut their own hair and do microtrims, trimming 1/4 inch a few times a year. There is also a "search & destroy" method where you basically hunt for split ends and cut them off. I don't do it but lots of others do.

You can also do moisture/conditioning treatments and wear protective hairstyles like buns and braids, which will help protect the ends.

Part of it is perspective... for someone who wears shorter hair (like armpit length or shorter) and cuts their hair frequently, you will only ever see 2-3 year old hair which is new and shiny and resilient. For a longhair, depending on length, the hair you see toward the bottom half could be five, six, or 7+ years old. It's been exposed to wind, heat, sun, products, pillowcases, pulling shirts and sweaters and coats on and off your head 2-3x longer than the hair at the top and it will definitely show wear more easily.

And, with long hair, you're talking about years-long process. A lot of people will cut X inches once they get to a certain length, in order to cut off a lot of damaged hair without losing too much length. (Example - growing out to tailbone length and then cutting to waist length, you still have waist length hair after your big chop. If you chopped all the hair off sooner you might have shorter hair than you'd prefer.) You could also be seeing people who are growing their hair out for the first time. Some of the 10-15+ year longhairs on the forum linked above have gorgeous, shiny hair with healthy, even ends.

And, yeah, one of the reason longhairs like to form a community is because the rabid love for long hair usually outweighs other hair desires, including flattering, stylish, or even healthy hair, and that can seem totally weird and unacceptable to others. Me personally, I try to strike a balance. My hair does tend to be dry and I would have way more curl if I cut it shorter - but at the same time I've cut 4-6 inches off twice in the last 13 years I've been growing, in order to get rid of damage. Some longhairs won't do that.

But, I mean... I don't know who it is you've seen with long hair haha. Maybe they are just clueless about how to take care of their hair and just wear it long out of habit or religious requirements.

Phew! I definitely didn't intend to turn this thread into long hair discussion, sorry all!

Haha! I've actually seen that used a time or two. ;) Beyond ear, chin, and shoulder length there's armpit length, bra strap length, waist length, hip length, tailbone length, classic (basically the bottom of the butt), knee, and terminal. Terminal means you will never stop growing it no matter how long. You can find a lot of pictures online of Victorian-era women or modern Chinese women with terminal length hair that extends well past their feet. But terminal can also just mean the longest your hair will grow, period. So if your hair only grows to your thigh, that's your terminal length.

  • The longest I plan to grow is tailbone length. I like to wear my hair down too much to wear it longer.
