HONY

Does anyone else follow Humans of New York on Facebook?

He's currently chronicling stories of refugees who have applied for placement in the USA and he's in the middle of an 11 part series about a girl named Aya.  He posted 8 parts on the 13th, none yesterday and a cliffhanger today (even though you know somewhat how the story ends).

I need the rest of the story Brandon!

Re: HONY

  • Yes! These stories are heartbreaking.

And I hate waiting for the updates, I need to know what happens to her and her refugee dog!
  • I am right there with you! I can't imagine celebrating such an amazing opportunity just to have it turn out to be a misunderstanding. I can't imagine living in 3 different countries, and never being able to feel safe. HONY helps me realize how much in life I take for granted.

I really hope there is a happy ending for Aya.

The good news is her petition has exceeded 575,000 signatures.

Apparently Brandon of HONY was on CNN and he said that the US has only been accepting applications from the disabled and people with PhD's.  How is this girl or her family supposed to get a formal education when they've been displaced for a decade?

Yes, I love HONY. I also follow Felines of New York, which is great in a completely different way.

    Oops, meant Felines.

  • I know the story you mean, and yes I need to know about Brandon and Aya!

Also,  does anyone follow the parody-ish "Felines of New York" ? lol
  • And now we learn it was her dream to go to America and meet Oprah. That is absolutely adorable, and I think Oprah should bring her here. Oprah has tons of power. She could probably make that happen.

  • Did you see that she passed security clearance in order to interpret for the US Ambassador to Turkey?!?  Ugh.  I'm just heart broken for her and can't believe Brandon hasn't shared part 11 yet.

He did now. And it's absolutely heartbreaking. :(

  • @AlPacina I just read it.  I kept saying, there has to be a good reason her dad isn't in photos.  That poor girl.

  • I do follow HONY on Facebook, but I don't always see the stuff posted because I have too many Facebook friends posting pictures of their babies and dogs and babies with their dogs, etc.

I just read through Aya's story. I am crying. Wow. It is so heartbreaking.

  • Seriously.  I'm just sitting here crying.

It just makes things so much more real when you read a personal story like that. It should hopefully make everyone realize that stereotypes are N/A in situations like this. My heart is so broken for her. And of course, as a rescue dog mom and dog lover in general, the post about her dog broke my heart too.

  • I was reading through the comments though and there are already tons of people trying to sponsor her into Canada. Apparently they have a program that makes that possible? I don't know enough about it, but I really hope it's not all talk.

HONY makes things happen, so I really do believe someone will follow through with it, if it truly is a possibility for her and her family. He has such an amazing group of followers.

  • I always wait until all of the segments are out because I don't want the cliffhangers!

I bought the coffee table book and have been a little disappointed that it is mostly just short quotes as opposed to the more indepth stuff you see on the fb page

  • @AlPacina  I'm not sure all the steps, but apparently it's easier to sponsor someone in Canada than America. A lot of people here are wanting to sponsor a bunch of the refugees that are coming in.
  • @kvruns - Which book do you have? His new book 'Stories' goes more in depth. I still love the first book though, because it focused less on the stories and more on the imagery that reflected their personalities.

@MissKittyDanger - Hell, Canada is awesome too. And they're definitely way more welcoming than we are right now. Or is that just me making an assumption? Are there large numbers of Canadians calling for your borders to be closed to Muslim refugees?

  • @AlPacina  General consensus typically yes we are more welcoming HOWEVER because of the shooting in Ottawa near the Parliament Buildings, there are many people playing into fear. Our PM is being very aware of that and reminding people that those coming here are being screened to be sure.

From what I've read Canada is the only nation that allows citizens to sponsor refugees directly, which is why the process is easier there.  But then again, this is how their politicians and elected officials greet refugees, so it's no surprise that the attitude has a trickle down effect.

Well, if a certain US presidential nominee wins the election, I will be moving to that awesome country.
  • I love HONY. It's what gives me hope. I sometimes read the stories aloud to my FI, and he can hear the tears in my voice even when they don't fall. I don't understand how anyone can fail to see the humanity in others.

He is such a beyond positive person, it's crazy. After the shooting in Ottawa, his speech was amazing. If you can look it up, please do so but short version is "We will not be afraid. We will be stronger." kinda deal and that was before he was elected.

Do it! :) Come join! If you live relatively close to the boarders, it's very similar weather.
  • @AlPacina I have the newest book. I'm only about 1/2 way through but it seemed like I've only read a couple that were a paragraph. Maybe I need to finish the book lol
