Date Night Gift

My sisters and I decided that instead of buying presents for each sister and their SO, we're giving pair gifts with a date night theme this year with a $50 limit.

My one sister was easy to buy for. My other sister is not. So I need some help coming up with good date night ideas.

They have two small kids and they each have different hobbies. He really likes sports and hunting/fishing. My sister is really health conscious, loves taking pictures, and reading. I have an awesome restaurant giftcard (organic and farm-to-table, which they'll love) in mind. But I can't think of anything to go with it. They currently have two small children, so I want to give them something they can go out and do without the kidlets (if they wish). Any suggestions?

My current backup is a giftcard for tickets to the MN Twins so they can do dinner and a game (they are near each other). But I sort of feel like giving two giftcards will be boring and uncreative.

Re: Date Night Gift

  • Oooh this is a great idea!! Do your sister and her family live near you? Can you given them a coupon for a night of your babysitting services in addition to the restaurant gift card so they can have a true Date Night?
  • My first thought was going hiking... maybe a backpack filled with water bottles and hiking snacks. That could fulfill his sports think with some great photo ops for her. But, you said MN Twins, so I'm assuming they are in a location that is not really suitable weather for hiking right now.

Maybe a day of sledding?  Buy them a sleds, a thermos or hot cups, and some packages of hot chocolate. Another good family day together and photo ops.  Or they could leave the kids and go with just the two of them.

Or look at activities on Groupon.  My parents have started doing groupon activities for gifts.  A few months ago, DH and I flew in a glider plane.  Last year my brother & his wife did a helicopter ride.  Maybe you will find something there.

  • Is there a movie coming out on DVD that they like?  You could get a DVD and make a basket of popcorn, hot cocoa, and a bottle of wine for a date night in.
  • The $50 limit is challenging....I guess I feel like if you're gifting them dinner, it should cover the meal and that may or may not be enough depending on the restaurant, if they each have a drink, etc.

Could you craft a giftcard for free babysitting services if you live nearby and fill a basket with a bottle of wine, some small personal gifts (cute scarf for her, small fishing accessory for him), chocolate, etc.

I also love the idea of a picnic basket date gift. Buy a basket and add some basic picnic supplies, wine glasses, bottle of wine, etc.

  • If he likes hunting, maybe a gift card to the shooting range? It's not my thing, but DH likes to go and I always do have fun when I join. If you did that you could gift them like a toy water gun or something similar to "open".

I agree that $50 doesn't go far with a restaurant in there too. If there is ice skating near, maybe they could do that, then give them magazines in their interests with a gift card to spend at a coffee shop.
