Last Minute January Vacation Ideas?

This isn't really a honeymoon, but I am trying to plan a little getaway for next month, around end of January.   Somewhere easy to plan on short notice and would want to stay under $3500 if possible.  We just really need a vacation, we never took a honeymoon (been married a year and a half and are always too busy to actually sit and plan anything, so time just got away and we never did it)   4-5 nights or so, I'm flexible.   We've been stressed and need a break.  Any suggestions?   We live in New York. I was thinking maybe a cruise out of Miami or something (we've never been on a cruise) might be easy to plan online ourselves?

I wrote an extensive post on cruise vacations at the top of this board.  Check it out, and read it carefully.  Remember, cruises do not include airfare, tips, excursions, insurance or alcohol, so you need to budget for this.
You should use a travel agent to book a cruise.  If you PM me, I will share mine.  All internet travel sites (Travelocity, Expedia, etc.) are travel agencies!

A good travel agent will know where the best bargains are, and, after talking with you, will make recommendations about cruise ship lines.
If you could spend 7 days, you will have more options, and it won't be much more expensive.

  • Thank you! I did read your post - lots of helpful info! I'll check out those cruises!
  • Southweat Airlines flies to Ft. Lauderdale where many of the cruises depart.
We didn't have much of a honeymoon, either.  We took our first cruise on our 25th anniversary, which was our first big trip with just the two of us.  We got hooked.  Now we've been on 20 cruises.

Thanks!  I was looking and found some good deals on flights...now to get hubby on board :)   If we do depart from Ft. Lauderdale, do you have any suggestions of close hotels (we would fly down the day before the cruise departs..this time of year and flying out of NY I wouldn't want to risk flying same day)
  • I assume you're wanting somewhere warm??  If you're open to other suggestions, pop up to Quebec/Montreal.  You may be able to catch some of Carnaval de Quebec (Winter Festival) and both cities are stunning.  You could also get some skiing/boarding in too, if you do that.  At the moment, the Cdn dollar is tanking and it's super cheap to head up.

    True 'dat :(

But on that vein, if you're into skiing, check out Whistler, BC, Banff or Jasper, AB. Tons of places to ski, hot springs, nice restaurants, wilderness scenery... beautiful.

Quebec City or Montreal are also beautiful.

Also check out deals for Las Vegas (you could go just to lounge by the pools, or take a trip to the Grand Canyon) or Arizona (we went there for our HM in Oct- loved it!).
  • There are many hotels near the port area, and most of them have a shuttle service, both from the airport to the hotel, and the next morning to the ship.  Here is a moderately priced one:

Hurry up if you want to get a deal on a cruise!  I have a great travel agent if you want to PM me.

I am not a fan of the cold, but in the past talked about taking a trip to Montreal...may have to revisit that idea when it warms up a bit!  i haven't been since I was too young to remember!

thank you!  We ended up deciding on just a simple trip to Florida for now and Jamaica in April to make up for our lack of honeymoon.   We might revisit a cruise at a later time.
  • Sounds wonderful!  Good luck and best wishes.
