Band vs DJ

My fiancé and I are trying to decide whether to hire a DJ or band in the area. It seems like most bands are coming in about $5k, and that doesn't even include the cocktail hour. (Ouch!). DJ's seem to be in the $1k to $1.5k range, and we can't decide if it's worth the splurge. Has anyone used a CT wedding band? We've looked at Sugar, Heartbead Dance Band and a few others. We've also gotten quotes and chatted with a few DJ's. Any thoughts?

I would have loved to have hired a live band but looking at our budget we opted for a DJ so we would have some more flexibility in other areas. We hired DJae Melee who is a board favorite here.

I am hiring a DJ. I don't like bands unless they have a great voice.
i been reading a lot of wedding post here and yes dj melee is a favorite.

We used MartyQ and I really liked him. He's also in a band but we felt that he did a great job with his live sax and DJ for the rest of the reception.

I think if you want a formal or black tie event then you need to have a band. Otherwise, I think a great DJ can be fine.
