Let's talk about that powerball.....

OK, we've all dreamed it.  I find it funny that we were talking about it at work and 2 of my co-workers said it wouldn't change them and they'd still go to work.

yeahno.  It WILL change me, and it's quitting time!

Let's hope it changes you in a good way, not THIS way:

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Man they must really love their jobs.  Because if I won (after I verify it of course) my ass would be quitting so fast.  I actually think many of my co-workers would think I was crazy if I didn't quit.  I mean why come into an office every day when you could be on your own yacht in the Mediterranean?

  • yes, I should clarify - I hope it changes me in a positive way LOL.  I'll still be the same lazy person, I'll just be able to afford to be lazy.

  • I like my job but I'd be out of here so fast for sure!
  • First thing we would do is contact a lawyer and an accountant.    I'm not sure about Colorado, but some states make you go public.  If that is the case, then I would setup a trust.  Then my lawyer on behalf of the trust collect the money.

Then I would quit (using PTO in the mean time for a few days to figure things out).

From there who knows.  Definitely a house and a trip back to our HM location.

  • I would take my unused vacation, then quit, hire an attorney, pay off our mortgage, re-do the kitchen, turn our bedroom into a suite, buy myself a new car (mine is 10 years old!), buy H a boat, set up a fund for our as of yet non-existent children, and take a long-ass fantastic trip somewhere warm.

Oh yeah I would quit my job in a heartbeat. Okay idea- name the top five things you would buy if you won (in no particular order):

    1. Pay off H's dental school loans
    2. Buy/furnish a beautiful house where I currently live
    3. Buy a fancy dog (love shelter doggies but it's always been a dream to get one of those really pretty, rare/expensive dog breeds that kind of look like wolves... probably would also donate a substantial chunk of money to a rescue shelter to assuage my guilt on that though, lol)
    4. Trip to Costa Rica with lots of friends and family
    5. Upgrade engagement ring (which I LOVE, don't get me wrong, but I'd want one super nice piece of jewelry and that makes the most sense to spend a lot on since I wear it daily)

Oh I would stop working in a heartbeat. I do like my job, I just like having free time more. I'd like to think I wouldn't really change my lifestyle other than quitting work, but I definitely have plans for money if we ever fall into some.

    1. Pay off my student loans/pay for the rest of my Masters in cash
    2. Pay our house off
    3. Buy my mom a house
    4. Start a college fund for our future kids
    5. Take a super sweet "money-is-no-object" kind of trip with DH and family

    ETA words

  • I don't even want to win win, I just want to match 5 numbers:).

    1.  We'd pay off our mortgage and loans
    2.  Buy my mom a nice, apartment in American House or something (she's disabled and will eventually need full time care)
    3.  Buy FI a new car - I hate his 2008 Cobalt!
    4.  Throw one hell of a Wedding/Honeymoon
    5.  Buy one pair of Manolo Blahniks
    image
  • I'd definitely, 100% quit.

    Things I'd do:
    1. Pay off mortgage and student loans.
    2. Go on a huge vacation.
    3. Whatever I want.
    image
  • I don't know that I would quit, but I wouldn't work a full time job anymore.  Or I might just volunteer somewhere as a part time "job".

1.) Pay off our mortgage, student loans, and car loan.

2.) Give money to parents and siblings, set up college funds for my nieces/nephews.

3.) Update my kitchen and bathrooms, re-do the backyard into my dream landscaped oasis with hot tub!

    4.) Buy a house in Hawaii (it's H's dream!)

5.) Take a dream vacation to Bali and stay in one of those over the water bungalows.

So, I know everyone who wins always says their lives changed, and not for the better, but I like to think I would handle it differently... I tend to think that people who say the lottery ruined their lives were either not responsible with their winnings, or they had no plan for what to do with the money.

Here's what I would do, after quitting my job and paying off all debt, of course:
    1. Buy a house with cash. And vacation houses at a beach and in the mountains.
    2. Pay off our parents' mortgages.
    3. Pay for the down payments on houses for our siblings.
    4. Set up trust funds for our unborn children.
    5. Vacations. Everywhere.
    6. Set up a charitable trust of some sort.

  • I wouldn't even come back into the office to clean out my desk.

    1. New cars for both of us. Top of the line Sierra/Silverado for H and I dunno what for me, but not my current Jeep Patriot.

    2. Condo/townhome/house in Chicago close to Bears/Hawks games.

    3. House in Whitefish, MT.

    4. Pay off the mortgages of my immediate family members.

    5. Similar to Maggie and that old lady who wants to take a bath in noodles in Patch Adams, I would take a bath in eel sauce. I fucking love that shit.

Image result for someecard betting someone half your shit youll love them forever
  • I don't even think I would quit, I would just stop showing up. Mainly because I want to know how long it would take my company to fire me. I would put the ticket in a safe deposit box then call a lawyer and accountant.

    1. I would start building our dream house (and sell our current house) in our same town.

    2. give a large lump sum to each immediate family member so they can do what they please

    3. Travel via private jets and with a nanny.

    4. Set up a trust for my kids.

    5. Go on one hell of a shopping spree.

  • I would quit but I like to be busy, so I'd volunteer at non-profits. Think socialite, without being a dick socialite. DH would get his pilot's license and start working as a private pilot and work only when he feels like it.

Like Lynda, we'd set up a trust. IL makes you go public and you need to hold off the masses.

    1. Buy a swank city condo, and a winery in Napa Valley.
    2. Make sure our parents and my sister/BIL are comfortable with living arrangements and any future health concerns.
    3. Christian Louboutins for days.
    4. Oh yeah, those pesky student loans would be wiped out.
    5. Invest, invest, invest.

DH actually knows someone who won $1 million in the little lotto. They're more broke now than before after bad real estate deals.

If I win I would definitely quit my job.

I would go back to school. I have been thinking about this but I don't have the motivation to do it part time.

I would give to various charities and churches. I would also help my family out. I would start a college fund for a few kids of close friends.

I would travel around the world. I would buy a house in Hawaii and one in Boston. I would live in Boston in summer, fall, and spring. I would winter in Hawaii.

    Now you're speaking my speak.

Remove "Boston" with "Salem" and I'm on board :)

  • I've moved so many god damn times I'm not even sure where we buy a house.   One definitely at a beach location.   Florida, back to the islands. House at the beach were my parent's live.  Who the hell knows?

Most likely an condo/apartment in NYC. Maybe a house on LI instead.

DH would want to open a restaurant.  He says he wants a boat.  I would just rather charter.

    Definitely travel.

I'm sure we would contribute to college funds for our 7 (soon to be 8) nieces/nephews.

Honestly, I'm not sure what, if anything, we would give to our siblings/parents.
Some already own close-to-or-over 7 figure homes.  Others struggling.  I like to be 'fair' to all.

I don't know.    Maybe instead of paying off mortgages and stuff like that (some own their's outright), spend it on experiences with the entire family.

One family I know would be the ones asking for money all the time.  There is a fine line between helping and enabling, the one family teeters between the 2 sides.  I want to help, but not be an ATM either.

    1. I'd give my kids, my parents, my brother  and a cousin  one million dollars each, up front, so they could be free from financial worries. The kids would get more later.

    2. I have a few friends that I would help out with $100k each.

    3. I'd buy a nice house at the beach, not a mansion. I have picked out my dream home on realtor.com, JIC.

    4. Give my present house to our youngest son if he wants it. If he doesn't, I'll give it to a needy family, no strings.

    5. I'd travel, starting with a cruise in the South Pacific.

ETA - My husband and I would officially be retired, of course.

  • I would -

    1. Pay off all our debt and mortgage.
    2. Quit and go to school full-time (both me and FH) for whatever we wanted.
    3. Purchase practical, reliable daily drivers.
    4. FH would probably buy a couple cars to tinker with.
    5. Pay off my parents' mortgage and give them enough to live on indefinitely - I love those people to death and they deserve it!
    6. Give my dad a business loan for the farm so he can turn it into his dream.
    7. Pay back my grandparents for paying for my brother's divorce, eyeroll.
    8. Put a small nest egg in a trust for my niece and nephew. Maybe $100k or something, not an amount that they could live on forever, just enough to be able to take some career risks. I'd probably make the age limit 25 or 28 though to prevent young person dumbass shenanigans :P
    9. Help my brothers in some way, maybe pay off one's mortgage and buy the other a house. I would not give them cash because one is incredibly irresponsible.
    10. Give some money to my favorite aunt and uncle, who've struggled with money for 15 years, to help them retire early.
    11. Adopt like 10 more cats haha. Although realistically probably only 3-5 more. ;)
    12. Hmmm and for something fun for myself... various extended trips to Vermont, Ireland, and Australia, my favorite places. Actually I'd probably buy a house in Vermont for the foliage season. Sadly I can't convince FH to move full-time due to (in his opinion) excess snow.
    13. Buy all of the crafting and needlework supplies I've ever wanted.
    14. And, probably weigh 800 lbs from eating delicious gourmet food all the time haha.

  • That much money could blow your life apart.  If I won, I would.....

    1.  See a lawyer to set up financial plans.
    2.  Enroll at a university to study economics.
    3.  Buy a security system for the house.
    4.  Hire a body guard.
    5.  Move to a gated, secure community.
    6.  Spend most of my time sorting through charity requests.

I don't think I'll be buying a ticket.  I like my life the way it is.
    httpiimgurcomTCCjW0wjpg
  • I would do something beyond crazy, I would hire a live band to follow me everywhere playing my own personal soundtrack. I would have people walk in front of me throwing diwn random red carpets and rose petals everywhere I walked. Then I would hire a personal driver and pay him extra if he would let me call him "Miles". Then I would blow the rest of the money traveling.

  • After the standard get with a lawyer and financial advisor, set up a trust etc....how I would spend $$:

    1. college fund for my niece and BFF's son

    2. have my parents pick a new house (they like theirs but dad is getting tired of yardwork and mom would prefer an in ground pool vs their above ground bc she has trouble getting in/out the ladder)

    3. buy my parents a new FL place (its in the middle of no where FL where my grandparents also live so it is inexpensive but I'd want them to have the best available in that area); fix up grandparents FL place too

    4. beach house for us in a couple places

    5. travel a lot, including a family vacation somewhere (though difficult bc mom doesn't like to fly....or drive LOL)

    6. fund an endowment or some long-term funding available for a non-profit I support

    7. DH gets whatever cars he wants. probably will need a new house to accommodate said cars

    8. financial gifts to my brothers to help them out though both are the kind that would likely blow through it so maybe something with a monthly or yearly payout vs lump sum. then again their adults so if they blow it they blow it

  • We already have trusts, financial advisors, an accountant, a lawyer, etc. But, they would certainly be the first people we'd run to! But, some things that would happen:

    - H would retire now instead of in 4 years, which would push our return to AZ up

    - I'd still work for the same company, but not doing what I'm currently doing. There are some jobs I've been eyeing back in AZ, so I'd transfer to one of them.

    - We own a home in AZ that has almost no mortgage left on it, but we'd probably buy a different one in the neighborhood we just moved from.

    - We'd buy a flat in London

    - We'd still travel the same amount that we do, but no more second guessing paying for business or first class airfare!

    - I just bought a brand new car, but DH would get a new one. Not sure what he'd get. He is funny about cars.

    - I'd help family in certain ways.

So, I guess it wouldn't really change our lives that much, other than making things a bit more comfortable. I kind of already do what I want since my life flashed before my eyes!

LOL well yes, we don't play either. This is just one of those "What if all my financial worries (and by extension many other worries) went away overnight?" pipe dream type exercises.

    1. Pay off the mortgage

    2. Pay off all credit card debt for FI and I

    3. Pay back my mom for the student loans she paid off for me.....even though she "gifted" it to me

    4. Pay back FI's parents the money they gave us for our down payment on the house (so we would have to dip into our savings....)

    5. Buy a car! (I've been carless for 9 months....make sure to ALWAYS have full coverage, even if you're a good driver and your car is 10 years old)

    6. Add Bora Bora to our honeymoon

    7. Quit my job

    8. Redo the bathrooms, kitchen and but new bedroom furniture

    9. Go back to school

    10. Give our parents money

    11. Start a college fund/trust fund for our unborn children.

    12. Take our friends on vacation

    13. Travel

  • I'd buy a home in England of comparable size and stature to the home in Downton Abbey, a mews house in London, and a townhouse where I live now. I'd also buy my late grandfather's house back from the new owners. And I'd spend a few years traveling. Eventually I'd want to settle into steady part time charitable work but not just yet.
