Cold and snow outside

I'm about done with the unusual cold weather we are having in western CO.  Our electric blanket broke, and we sent it back to the factory under warranty.  The cat is being unhelpful, since he loves DH best.  No fireplace.  I've been drinking lots of hot tea.  Boo!  I want to see the sun again!
I'm looking at some quickie bargain cruises to the Caribbean.  February has deals.  I've been to most places in the Caribbean, but dammit, I'm cold!

Re: Cold and snow outside

  • Stupid El Nino. It was 65 degrees on Christmas here in central IL. The weather is just plain weird this year. But any excuse to go on a cruise is a good one in my book. We are planning to go on another one in 2017 with my DH's family again.
  • definitely go on that cruise, no need to be cold!
  • I am jealous! We are just now getting cold weather here in TN. Until last week it was in the upper 60's/low 70's every day. Very unseasonably warm. Now, suddenly, they are predicting snow for next week. I am ok with that, since we rarely get snow in southeast TN.

Have you been to St. Kitts, CMG? That's where DH and I went on our honeymoon. It stays in the 80's consistently year round, and it's gorgeous. I think a lot of cruise ships make a stop there.

  • Do it!!  That's a huge part of the reason we went to Hawaii over Christmas.  I miss being warm too

  • Yes, do it!

This is my first winter out of AZ, though it's been cold there too! I can only hope that it warms up when we're there next weekend. I need some pool time prior to being stuck in the house after surgery. Although, being stuck in the house in my pjs, a big blanket, and warm kitties doesn't sound so bad!

  • I have 3 warmer locations to go to this winter, and I'm looking forward to all three.  Although, I heard it's going to warm up soon....

    A cruise sounds fab!

  • I'm so over El Niño. I'm in AZ also, and this is the coldest winter I can remember, and it rains almost every day. My parents were here from the Midwest over Christmas, and they were disappointed in the weather here, especially since they've had such a mild winter.
  • Yeah, we're going.  It's one week out of Ft. Lauderdale.  An older Holland America ship, but I like the itinerary, and HAL's food is great!

  • Winter came late to CT, just like last year. No snow so far, but this weekend might change that. Last year, once it started, we had one storm after another. I hate snow and cold.

I'm getting ready for a Caribbean cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale. Checking the forecast - sail away will be rainy with rough seas. I'm packing lots of Bonine and Benadryl, JIC. All the summer clothes are ready to go. I have a stupid question for you. Some posters on the cruise message board iron and crease their jeans to make them look dressy. I think it would look like your grandma did your laundry. So, do any of you iron your jeans? Am I a slob or are they a little nuts?

@thefanciestbeckler - looking for suggestions of things to do on St. Kitts. None of the ship's excursions appealed to me.

  • Awesome! I can't complain about our weather because we were unseasonably warm unit a couple of days after Christmas and we were all loving it. We are in the 30's right now which really isn't bad for January around here.
  • @MairePoppy I do have to say that the island is just now starting to build up the tourism industry, so there are not many things to do there just yet. DH and I were mostly interested in a place where we could go to the beach without being bothered by lots of people and kids, and we got our wish! The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and the island has some of the most amazing food that I have ever had. Do you know off the top of your head what your options are?

@thefanciestbeckler  The port is in Basseterre. I've been there before, but we just walked around the shops and dodged the man trying to sell photos with a kidnapped baby monkey. Poor monkey. There was a group demonstrating their Mardi Gras routine, so that was interesting. The excursions included a train ride, Romney Manor (I think that was the name), and one of the beaches - that was my back up plan.

Yep I totally fell for that one. He approached DH and I in the dark at the Marriott resort one night, and we had no idea what was going on. All he asked was if I wanted to hold his monkey and then started snapping pictures and told us it would be $50 US. WHAT??? Won't be falling for that again.

I'd probably recommend just doing one of the beaches. They've all got delicious beach bars on them. Sorry I couldn't be more help!!

  • Like a few others, I'm also in AZ.  This colder weather (around 50, so it's not cold by most US winter comparisons) is annoying, but I am not liking the rain.  I love a good thunderstorm but rain all day, every day is not fun.  And my joints are absolutely hating it and leaving me in pain.  I was doing good most of this week, but it's just almost unbearable today.  My family came to visit from Alabama for Christmas and they left 70-80 degree weather to come to our 50 degrees.  They all packed shorts and warm weather clothes and were unpleasantly surprised to find it cold here.

  • This was me on Christmas Day.
    :)

  • Sigh!  I'm going to take my Nook reader and relax on my balcony for 7 whole days!

  • Thanks @thefanciestbeckler - We'll probably head to the beach. Nothing wrong with that.

  • It's been much colder this year for us.    Yeah, yeah, it should be cold because I live in the mountains, but it really is colder.    We were under the freezing mark for 14 days.  Normally it's above freezing in the day and dips down below at night.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

When we were in England last month, we visited a Monkey rescue. They focus specifically on rescuing monkeys from touristy areas where they are used for pictures. The things they told us about how these monkeys were treated are awful. It broke my heart. The rescue, Monkey World, has its own TV show over there, where they raise awareness for the cause.

These are infant monkeys in diapers. I'm sure as soon as they're no longer cute and controllable,  they are probably released in the wild, or worse, and another baby is captured. Very sad.

  • I don't mind the cold as until it's something like -20° actual temperatures, I'm comfy.

But we've had two days of rain turning into sleet turning into snow. With temperatures rapidly dropping, it's supposed to get to 8° tonight and -12° tomorrow night.  So the streets will be a vicious nightmare.

Sigh.  I am an ironing freak.  I iron jeans, t-shirts, the zippers on hoodies so they lay flat, and the occasional pillow case.  I will say, however, that when ironing jeans, I take the iron near the point of the crease, but never actually iron a crease into the jean.

As I am now a grandma as well, I guess I'm an official cliche.  :-(  I must admit, though, that I had never heard a crease in jeans increased the "dressy" factor.  My daughter would argue it elevates my dork factor.

@MOB LOL That's what I figured, no crease.

I have occasional ironing binges. My daughter dropped in one day while I was ironing pillowcases. She was stunned. I don't do it all the time, but these were 800 thread count Egyptian cotton and I couldn't resist. Most of the time, I avoid ironing, though.

  • Ironing?  What is that?

I iron whenever needed. And by "iron" I mean throw the wrinkled clothes into the dryer with a wet washcloth.

I could handle a little snow here in Indiana. It has been just weird. Usually during the cold months I take a lot of long, hot baths in my soaker tub reading :)
Also in Indiana! It has been a warm winter. And very soggy. I wouldn't mind some snow, actually. As long as it's not ice.

On the topic of cruises tho, anybody done any cruises to Europe? I've never been on a cruise at all before, but I've been daydreaming and browsing the Viking Cruises. FI and I are going to have a modest honeymoon this summer, but we really want to go to Europe together for a future anniversary (we met as graduate students in ancient history & languages, and have both been to Italy/ Greece independently a few times for studies, but would love to go with one another for once!). Anybody done cruises there?

  • My mom and I did a cruise in the Mediterranean a couple of years ago. I had been to France, Italy and Greece the summer before I graduated high school and I wanted to take her to the places I loved. We cruised from Italy and went to Montenegro and Greece; we arrived a few days ahead of the cruise to spend time with some family that live in San Marco. I would love to go back with FI, but he has insisted that he wants to go "somewhere warm in the Caribbean."

The river cruises in Europe are VERY different from ocean cruises.  We did one a couple years ago (Christmas Markets down the Danube - amazing!) and will be going on our second in a few months. There's about 160 passengers.  The only entertainment is usually a local musician, singer, etc after dinner. It's generally an older crowd - at mid 30s, we were the 2nd youngest couple on board last time.  We don't mind - we enjoy chatting with anyone - but if you're looking for that young, night life scene, this is NOT the type of cruise.  Most everything is included - all meals, wine/beer at dinner, guided excursions at each stop, etc.  Unlike ocean cruises where you often have to travel (sometimes up to an hour!) from the port to the actual destination, river cruises you often step off the ship and are at your destination.

We would never do Viking though - generally, they require the entire payment up front.  That's not something we're comfortable with.  We did alot of research before our last river cruise and chose AMA Waterways.  They are modern ships and we felt would fit us best.  We loved them and chose them again for this spring.

And finally, it's expensive.  We save money by booking either a french balcony or cabin with a large window - if you want to sit outside, it's so easy to get to the sun deck or huge lounge room since the ship is so small.  And on our Christmas Markets cruise, we knew we wouldn't be sitting outside anyway! We don't miss the balcony and appreciate the savings.  They do run promotions from time to time with good deals, but our work schedule is not as flexible.  If we could afford to always travel like this, we would - it's a wonderful way to see the world.
  • @Jells2dot0 were you in weymouth on the south coast of england? Monkey world is amazing, one of my favourite places down there!
