Under planned circumstances how long could you go without doing laundry? Meaning you know your laundry room will be torn apart Monday so you have time to prepare.

I'd say 3-4 weeks. I think underwear/socks and sheets would be the limiting factors. There's always a laundromat for an emergency. It's not convenient or cheap, but will do in a pinch.
  • Underwear/socks would be the issue in our house.

  • My underwear and socks would be the issue.  With time to prep, I'd just buy more of those things.
  • I'm so glad I'm not the strange one.  MIL asked what we were going to do when they remodel the laundry room.  I said it's no biggie, I only do laundry Mondays so I'll do it Sunday instead and it'll all be back by the end of the week.  She was APPALLED I could go that long between loads.

I can't figure out how 2 people need to do laundry every other day.  They literally have so many clothes that the rods tore out of the walls in their closet.  The rods were installed properly.
  • I could technically go 3-4 weeks, looking through my closet, but I only wear like 2 of my many pairs of jeans, because they're the most comfy. But I voted 7-10 days because I'd probably end up at a laundromat after a week or so of only wearing dresses or those pants.

Saturdays are our laundry day. I could not imagine doing it more often, unless I'm taking down all the curtains and taking summer clothes out of storage for spring cleaning.

With all those clothes, you'd think they'd do laundry less often, not more. ???
  • We could technically get by for 3-7 days if we had to, but I really need to do laundry every other day.
  • I try to do a load every other day because I hate saving it for one day.   But it's something like a full load of dark in cold water on Monday, white clothing Tuesdsay, medium colored in warm water on Wed, towels and sheets Thurs, more sheets Fri.

Back when it was just DH and me, I did laundry once a week and it was usually 3-4 loads.   2 for clothing (light and dark) and two for sheets and towels.

Now that we have two kids, we may need to do more and if a kid wets the bed then uuuuuuugggghhh.

  • TMI warning ahead.

... I don't usually wear clothes at home, so if I only wore clothes when I left the house, my biggest concern would be undies (which I sometimes wear at home). However, I own probably 40 pairs. I'd be good for a month. My FI would be good for three weeks-ish.

Currently, we are way backed up on laundry seeing as we just got home from visiting family for the holidays. I also get lazy around the start and end of semesters. This week is when I get my butt back into gear.

Right?!?  Most of my laundry is because of kids.
  • With 2 of us, I do 3-4 loads every 7-10 days.  That does not include my husband's uniforms.

I just realized that I don't do Son's laundry, so when I do it every other day, it's just for 4 of us.  So our laundry room is used almost every day of the week.

He's got practices/games every single day in the spring/summer and a minimum of 3 nights per week the rest of the year.  There is no way he couldn't do laundry for a week.
  • hmm, i forgot Wolverine's school uniforms. We have enough stuff that she could get by for 2 weeks, maybe a little longer if she wore something 2x - so I will revise my answer to 2 weeks now, 3-4 weeks when school is out for summer.
  • We could go 2 weeks in between laundry, but we usually do laundry as soon as the hamper is full, so twice a week or so now.

In the winter months, I wear fleece pajamas at home and no bra.  Comfortable and warm, but the long cat hair sticks to it.
DH is very active and perspires more than most men.  (Both my late mother and my step-MIL were shocked!)  so I have to do laundry at least once a  week, or put the basket out on the porch to fumigate.
    @banana468 What about diapers?

When you say need to is that just so you don't have two loads a different day? Or do you run out of something? When you are saying you do it every other day how many loads is that and how many do you do in a week? I just don't comprehend.

If you mean cloth diapers, ha! Our DC requires disposables and I don't want to deal with the extra rinse cycle.

If you mean the bed wetting, DD is major leaker. She wears a pullup to bed but that doesn't always hold it.

It's really more of a need.  I have one sports bra and two regular bras right now.  I work out 4 days a week and have enough workout clothes for 2 days.  DH wears two outfits per day, work clothes and after-work clothes.  He works a physically demanding job that leaves his clothes dirty and smelly.  He has enough work clothes for a whole week, but they can't sit there very long or they'll smell up the place.

Also, we have 5 people who shower, 2 of them twice a day (3 in the summer.  People, not showers).  We go through towels and washcloths like crazy.

I really do have a never-ending pile of laundry.  The laundry closet is never empty.
  • when I'm working, my work clothes and the Mr's uniforms are the limiting factors.
So a week.  but if those weren't factors, I could go way longer.  the choice eventually becomes 'laundry or buy more underwear", doesn't it?

It gets cold sometimes, so I'll either cuddle under a blanket/ carry a small one around, or put on sweat pants or socks. Also, I misspoke when I said I wear no clothes at home. I usually wear underwear. I'm not sure how it could get messy. Cooking can be unpleasant if I'm making something greasy, but I have an apron for that.

  • Yeah, DS's uniforms would get us. We have about a week plus a one back up so after a week, we'd be at a laundromat.

At other house, when we did the laundry room I did what you did. Did all my loads the day before and we were good. I did take over one load to my mom's house because the kids had a load of messy grody clothes.

I was referring to messes that happen when underwear isn't. Like.....snail trails.
  • Terrible, but I would go 6-8 weeks+ without doing laundry when I lived without good access to washing machines. If I have to, I can make it work. After doing that for an entire year though, I will say it did ruin some clothing items and reduced the quality of others. There were a few times when I would purchase underwear and socks rather than find a place to do laundry.
I prefer to do laundry every weekend, approximately 5-7 days. Even when I did laundry for a family of four, a good schedule was several loads every weekend.

  • I regularly go a month + between laundry days.  I have enough clothes, including underwear (I rarely have to wear socks but if I did I'd only need another dozen or so to have just as many as undies) and pants that I don't need to do it more often.  Generally when I get low on panties I start planning my next laundry day.  We have only one washing machine and dryer for our complex and I hate fighting with people over it, plus folding laundry is painful for my shoulders, so I generally avoid it as long as possible.
