Valentine's Day?

H and I have never been big Valentine's celebrators, just wasn't really our thing. This is your first one since we've been married and I was shocked when he said he was making plans (then asked me what I wanted to do). Anyone else not big on Valentine's Day?

We don't usually do much for Valentine's but last year and this year our favorite bar in Asheville does a Lupercalia party (it's a fertility festival adopted but not invented by the Romans and much like Christmas was scheduled to coincide with pagan Yule/Saturnalia, Valentine's day was shoved into the calendar to eclipse Lupercalia). Drinks, burlesque, raunchy poetry (last time someone read Catullus and another read Sappho, among other things), people in costume... fun stuff.

We have reservations for brunch at a favorite place about 1.5 hrs from home. However, the forecast is for up to 6" of snow and high winds so we will probably cancel and go somewhere in town.

I bought DH a bottle of bourbon (4 Roses single barrel) and I got some corny cards for all my boys. We don't really 'celebrate' it consistently.

We aren't big into Valentine's either. We exchange cards, have dinner at home (either DH makes me spaghetti or I make us lobster because it is on sale at the store), and watch a romantic comedy movie (which we only do once or twice a year). It is very low key and relaxing.

Um, I bought DH chocolate covered heart pretzels at Aldi. I put them in the pantry and he found them yesterday. I have nothing else.

We don't make a huge deal out of it but usually go out to dinner or make a special dinner at home. DH buys me my favorite flowers (roses and lilies) and we get a box of chocolates. Last year and this year our dinner reservations have been more extravagant than usual. Last year we went to the melting pot since it was our first/only valentines being engaged. This year we have reservations at a really fancy Italian restaurant downtown to celebrate our first valentines married and we both got bonuses at work. Weather has not treated us well for valentines though. Last year was a crazy blizzard so we drove 2 hrs through it to get to the melting pot. This year we'll be walking around the downtown with single digit temps...

We don't usually do anything. DH thinks it's stupid to buy into the hallmark holidays (I don't disagree). And neither of us like the crowds. So, we will stay at home and watch a movie or something. Although, I did find some printable v-day cards from his favorite football team and hid them around the house last night (next to his toothbrush, on the bathroom wall, on his stash of soda, in the egg carton since he makes breakfast each morning, etc.). He found all except one so far. He thought it was silly/stupid at first, then a while later he started wondering where the rest of them were and started searching.

ETA: And although DH claimed that the v-day cards were silly & stupid, they are all still sitting where he found them. If he really thought they were stupid, I'd assume they would be in the trash, instead of remaining taped to the bathroom wall where he has to look at it every time he poops. He just doesn't want to admit that he secretly like it.

Since FI and I have been together, our favorite car show is always the weekend of Valentine's. So we hang out at the car show and listen to the bands play all day, then we go to dinner somewhere. But this year, the show ends early on Sunday and The Walking Dead is premiering, so I'll probably throw something in the crockpot before leaving the house and then we will just veg when we get home.

DH loathes Valentine's Day. He usually makes a nice dinner but the idea of showing up with roses and chocolates is something that creates a gag reflex.

I'm not really huge into it either but I do like chocolate and roses. Last year he got bathroom towels that said, "I love you" and "I know".

Which should tell you my plans. Buy ALL the chocolate on Monday. (Also, I have to work, because my director knows I won't bitch about singing on Valentine's weekend.)

H and I usually buy small stuff (cards and candy) and go to dinner. We close on our house in two weeks so we're broke this year and I told him that we shouldn't do anything. I suggested celebrating on Pi day next month instead.

But I just found that the restaurant where we got married has a Vday special thing. Hmmmm.

DH is a chef. He fucking HATES Valentine's day. I can take it or leave it. DH always works anyway, we do not bother celebrating it on another day. We don't need an excuse to go out to eat a nice dinner or give each other gifts.

This year I'm flying down to NOLA on Sunday for business. I do not mind eating alone, but on V-day, well it's going to suck. More for the crowds than anything else.

We're normally into going out to eat, but we haven't made reservations anywhere yet. Meh.

I colored a pretty picture of two birds and flowers (from my adult coloring book) and wrote "Lovebirds" and "Happy Valentines Day" on it and gave it to him last night. He tried to play it off like it was so cheesy but I could tell by the look on his face he genuinely liked it. He always claims to not be a card guy but he does save every card I get him!

I'm in the minority that loves Valentine's day. H likes it too. We love any excuse to celebrate, really. We haven't gone out to dinner on Valentine's day itself (too crowded) but we'll usually go out the weekend before or after and we do get each other gifts.

This year we're planning on takeout (I really want indian food) and getting a really nice bottle of champagne. I wanted to go out to our favorite little Italian place but we've spent WAY too much money over the past couple months and need to buckle down. I did get him tickets to an event at the wine and culinary center in our town and he's apparently going all arts and crafts on my gift - he said he needs about two hours tomorrow to put it all together. I'm very curious.

We don't do much. All we do is cards and cook a new recipe together. Nothing extravagant. I hate eating out on Valentine's Day and have no place for silly trinkets.

We like the holiday, though we don't make a huge deal out of it. We do always go to church together, since that was our first Valentines date. I think this year we're also going to the candlelight dinner at McDonald's. It's super cheesy, but it's fun:)

Our first official date was on Valentine's Day, so we enjoy it, but we don't make a big deal of it every year. Sometimes we do something or exchange gifts, and sometimes we don't. I don't think we are bothering with it at all this year.

I don't like the traditional element of Vday, but I always like spending time together and having a night out. Ours is going to be low-key. I hate doing stuff on Sundays, so we aren't doing anything that day. We are going to dead pool & dinner tonight, and having some fancy dinner & wine at home tomorrow night. Probably buy some chocolate on Monday once it goes on sale

I got these for FI last year for valentine's day! We are not into valentine's day and always say no gifts, but I couldn't resist this (and FI hardly resists the opportunity to buy lingerie "for me"). Though this year we really seriously agreed not to exchange gifts, funny or otherwise. Wedding year = saving money.

Depending if we are in save mode or spend mode, we get cards and gifts for each other. H will get me flowers. We are in save mode now, so we will only exchange cards. H did get me flowers a few weeks ago for helping him shovel all the snow from our blizzard and I'm not expecting another bouquet. But mostly that is because we will be on vacation! Woo!

Saturday we start our journey down to Myrtle Beach for the week. We are staying over in MD, near H's friend. The plan was to see him for dinner, but he will most likely now have to work But the room is free with my hotel points, so we are still doing that. Then on Sunday we check in to our timeshare in Myrtle Beach. I have a special dinner planned to cook for us.

After we check in, I'm going to head to a Cold Stone to get us dessert. Then for dinner, a local Italian food store made red heart shaped cheese raviolis. Ravioli is one of H's favorites, so I got some for us. Then I will also make these fried mozz sandwich things to go with, H loves them, but we don't make them very often. We always planned on bringing a cooler of food, so the ravioli situation was going to work and I went for it. H will be thrilled with dinner!

How did I not know about half-priced candy the day after Valentines Day?! So glad I started this thread...

I brought home mini-cupcakes for H tonight; he's been in the house less than 30 minutes and 2/3 are gone already.

@artbyallie, you just made the Classicist in me so happy referencing Lupercalia and Catullus and Sappho. Nothing like a festival where men streak naked save for goatskins through the streets and slap women with leather thongs to "bless" them with fertility. Putting the "Roman" into "Romance."

Neither my FI or I are too big on Valentines' day. When we first started dating, he had me over for a nice dinner once, but we haven't really done that in years now. And I guess he did send me flowers once while I was teaching at a high school -- so many teenage girls were gushing on my behalf, haha! But overall we don't get too into the holiday. We might cook something nice together, but we do that on weekends anyway, so it's nothing that out of the ordinary.

Well... FTD had a special on Sheri's Berries - and I found some roses at the store that were neat today... I've learned/gotten to the point - if I want something to mark a holiday I do it as something special for myself as DH isn't into the whole materialistic aspect of any holiday (not just Valentine's). Plus, this way I get exactly what I want! And, it's a long story but my eating habits completely changed when I got back from Florida (this is what happens when you go in for continuing education classes as a hypnotist LOL - my trainer had A LOT of fun!) so it's made things a lot more complex..

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. H isn't really big into recognizing stuff like that. When the kids were little, I would buy them cards and a little something. Tonight we are going to a dinner party at a friend's house. He is an amazing cook and puts on extravagant dinner parties. I think it is just a coincidence that it is Valentine's weekend though.

I'm into celebrating, but we don't go out on Valentine's Day. We usually cook dinner together on the day and then go out another evening to our favourite restaurant. I also hand make him a card (but I do this because I love scrapbooking/card making). He never buys me flowers because we both agreed that they are overpriced around this time and I'd rather 'just-because' flowers another day.

DH usually buys me some roses the week before V day (before the prices go up!) We don't really celebrate it.
My son (who is still single) says that Valentine's Day is a great opportunity for single men. In high school, he used to buy a dozen roses at the grocery store. He would give them out, one at a time, to the girls who looked depressed on Valentine's Day. He made a lot of ladies smile, and he got some kisses and hugs.
