DH loathes Valentine's Day.   He usually makes a nice dinner but the idea of showing up with roses and chocolates is something that creates a gag reflex.

I'm not really huge into it either but I do like chocolate and roses.   Last year he got bathroom towels that said, "I love you" and "I know".
I got these for FI last year for valentine's day! We are not into valentine's day and always say no gifts, but I couldn't resist this (and FI hardly resists the opportunity to buy lingerie "for me"). Though this year we really seriously agreed not to exchange gifts, funny or otherwise. Wedding year = saving money.
This year for Christmas he got a black the shirt that says I KNOW in the standard yellow Star Wars font.   It's awesome.
  • I'm meh about vday so I've never celebrated, but this year John Waters is in town doing a one man show. We got tickets with some friends, so excited

I almost bought those for my DH!
  • Our anniversary is 2/2, so we celebrate more then.  By the time Valentine's day rolls around, we're tired of celebrating our love.  He got be roses and I got his car washed and I cleaned the dog hair out of it.   We're cooking steak dinner tomorrow night after Mass.  And I told my boss that I would not be available for our nightly conference call with the team in India.

I went to see him a couple of years ago! Money well spent. You will have loads of fun.
  • We do not exchange gifts or flowers or boxes of chocolate, sort of on principle - not a big fan of the showy stuff just because Hallmark or whoever decided it was tradition. (Before I met FH I called it "Wear Pink Day" because I can always get behind that!)

We write love letters, sometimes inside of cards, and usually have some BBQ or another low-key restaurant. We discovered today that our favorite BBQ place doesn't open Sundays so I am thinking of picking up some Moe's. At least there's no prix fixe menu? lol.

FH's real gift to me today was picking up bagels and Mucinex this morning (I'm sick) then spending all afternoon installing a couple GFCI outlets and, finally, the wall mount for our TV. That may not be traditional romance but lord I love that man!

  • We just agreed to not celebrate Valentine’s Day years ago.  It has worked out well for us.  We do not have to worry about gifts or high priced dinners.  We just do what we usually do and have a fun time.

I haven't laughed that hard since I saw Carol Burnett live. It was awesome

  • We got donuts, went to see "Deadpool," and did some shopping at Target. FW got me a boutique cupcake the size of my palm and some Buckeyes (yummy peanut butter and chocolate candies); I got her a pendant.
  • We don't usually do much for Valentine's but last year and this year our favorite bar in Asheville does a Lupercalia party (it's a fertility festival adopted but not invented by the Romans and much like Christmas was scheduled to coincide with pagan Yule/Saturnalia, Valentine's day was shoved into the calendar to eclipse Lupercalia). Drinks, burlesque, raunchy poetry (last time someone read Catullus and another read Sappho, among other things), people in costume... fun stuff.
    That sounds like a blast!

My son (who is still single) says that Valentine's Day is a great opportunity for single men.  In high school, he used to buy a dozen roses at the grocery store.  He would give them out, one at a time, to the girls who looked depressed on Valentine's Day.  He made a lot of ladies smile, and he got some kisses and hugs.
What a sweet thing for your son to do!
  • We usually get each other some kind of gift, and do a little fancier date sometime in February (not V-day weekend, too crowded.) This year I got him a poker tabletop and a few little tech gadgets , he bought me an alexandrite bracelet on our trip last week. I love jewelry, so that is his go to for gifts.
  • @thisismynickname Reporting back on my Valentine's day present from H! He gave me an incredibly sweet and romantic gift that completely surprised me. He spent weeks going through every photo we've taken since getting together 4 years ago, including all of our wedding photos, and got them printed and organized into photo albums for me. It was 1,0000+ photos and hours of work on his part. We've been saying that we wanted to do this for some time now so he took it upon himself and did it. I was blown away.
