Wedding Woes

Monday?

This weekend was great. DH and I went on a date Friday night and had a blast. We had dinner and then went to see 19 Cloverfield Lane, which was amazing until the last 10 minutes or so.

Saturday I grocery shopped and then hung out at the house the rest of the day. Yesterday was church, and a going away party for my best friend's brother. He's moving to China for a year, and I was told that my best friend A couldn't be there. She lives 12 hours away, so it just didn't seem possible for her and her H to come. I didn't feel much like going, but decided to go anyways since A couldn't make it. As soon as I walked in the door, her brother came and hugged me and said "you really need to go look at the food table"..... Surprise! A and her H were there! She'd kept it a total secret from everyone except for her parents. That was a fun surprise.

I'm having a rough day today. DH leaves for his new job tomorrow and he will be gone for 3+ months straight. We'll really only be able to see each other if we FaceTime or if he's close enough for weekend trips. I woke up this morning and realized that tomorrow will be the last day we wake up together for a long time.

What's going on for everybody else? How was the weekend?

Re: Monday?

  • That sucks, @thefanciestbeckler .  :(

I helped out with a drag show pageant on Friday night.  I was dressing a diva (new to me, but basically a female performer doing drag queen like makeup and outfits) and a drag king (K).  That was intense, being backstage with a bunch of queens was interesting.  :D  Also, one of them practically stole my shoes off of my feet.

Saturday was recovery.  We woke up, went to get breakfast, came back to my place and went back to sleep until 1 pm.  Went to an exhibit after that and met up with one of my BFFs and my godsons.  The boys are getting big.  BFF also had another potential foster-to-adopt with them.  Finally, a girl.  And OMG she is adorable.  I mean, straight up KNOWS she's adorable, threw her shoulder and flipped her hair at me while yelling hi.  Then she tried to bust out of her stroller.  I died a little.  I try not to get attached too much until adoption process is a bit farther along, but I pretty much could've taken that doll home.

Sunday I typed up a 450+ potential sponsor database.  So much work, but worth it. Then finished up House of Cards.  Went outside because there were reports of flash flooding and found a river going by my rear balcony.  Went to bed early and still had my butt kicked this morning by DST.

if you remember we had disasterous days off involving my favorite, PLUMBING last week.  So we had moved our plans to Saturday.

Friday was daddy-daughter dance (if I didn't put pics on FB, I will), and we drove buffy to grandparents after for a sleepover...which, we hit a bunny (sorry bunny) and it knocked an air scoop off the Mr's car.  So we spent Saturday morning with jacks and flashlights and sockets.  we fixed it, but it was annoying.  (and we put the old dishwasher at the side of the road w/ a free sign.  someone took it, so YAY).

So we decided to still try to go out on Sat, went for lunch and I got knocked on my ass by a migraine that had been percolating--which, movies do NOT go w/ migraines.  So we came home and I spent the rest of the day medicated and in bed.
Yesterday I went to oldwork to do some checking on what I'm volunteering with next weekend, then came home and went back into medicated bed.

Now I"m having bread pudding for brunch.

Saturday we got Max his big bike.  He looks so BIG!  I took M2 to the Big 10 gymnastics meet, then dinner, and Krispy Kreme.  We sat right about Shawn Johnson.  M2 didn't have a clue, but I was excited.  We had so much fun.  DH took the boys to the Crew game.  They didn't get home until 10 and Max was still chattering away.

Sunday was M2's birthday fun day.  We had donuts for breakfast, went to Steak n Shake for lunch then to a movie with popcorn, airheads, and sprite.  SO MUCH JUNK FOOD this weekend.

We had her 5 year pictures today.  FIVE!  I had a hard time picking a few pictures because I wanted them all.
  • Ugh @thefanciestbeckler that's so hard, I'm sorry.  FI is (ironically based on your post) going to China for work for 3 weeks this summer and I'm already dreading not seeing him for that long.  I can't imagine 3 months!

My BFF was having a bad boy day on Friday so we snuck out of work and hit up the bar at 3:30 ish.  I was a bit of mess and FI came to make sure we got home safely:).  Then, besides continued fighting with his mom, we laid around and then hung out with his dad, stepmom and brother yesterday.

All of your kid posts about this weekend make me miss my niece!

  • I worked all weekend long. Had a co-author in town to finally make some progress on a research project. We got a lot done but there was no relaxing.

And H is being a butt head. We're starting the home buying process and he freaks out about money every step of the way. We've had this trip planned for months to go look at houses, we have a realtor we've been working with, we had a small hiccup with the bank needing extra student loan documentation and now he's ready to call the whole thing off. Not really because two hours after he freaks out, he calms down and realizes, we've been saving a ton of money, we both have excellent credit and the mortgages for homes were looking at are cheaper than any rent we've ever paid. Anyone else have their spouses do something similar?
  • I spent 3 hours with FI and Urgent Care on Friday after work. He has an ear infection. So he had to get drops for it. Everywhere in this damn town was out of the EAR drops, but 1 place had the EYE drops that can be used for ears. An hour later, we have meds. Go home, he is hungry. I make beef and veggie soup, he doesn't eat because he is passed out on the couch.

Is this what its like to have kids? Or are males just super babies when they are sick?

The rest of the weekend was spent on the couch watching things on the DVR and FI sleeping on and off.

    I wasn't ready for Monday :(

  • Former DH had an ear infection and it was terrible.  I was annoyed; however I do think he actually felt terrible.  He had terrible vertigo and nausea and slept a ton.  He also hated the ear drops something fierce.  He was down for nearly a full week.
  • I'm back from the dead.

I came down with strep last Monday night, had a culture on Tuesday and was on antibiotics by Weds morning.  Horrible sore throat, everything ached and I had a temp of 102.  Yuck.  I missed 3 days of work but went back on Friday as it was a short day.

DH avoided strep but wasn't feeling well all weekend.  I was also coughing up a lung all weekend so we hibernated.  I think we are both finally getting to feeling healthy again.  Lots of napping, TV, etc at our house last week.

This week it'll be catching up on everything that didn't get done last week at home and at work.

EDITED because please don't read this. It is a waste of your time but I feel better because this shit is driving me fucking nuts.

I am currently obsessing over towels. My weekend was spent dicking around with towels and that will probably spill into this week. And I am about to write you guys an essay on my towel issue.

When H and I registered, I wanted a light blue and brown bathroom in our apartment. So we registered for light blue and brown towels. After we registered, we decided to move into a rental house with an old-ass yellow and black bathroom. So I socked the new towels away and we still used the old ones.

Now we bought a house and the master bathroom has a black/white/silver/purple granite countertop. So those same towels I've been looking forward to using won't work again. So they're going in the guest bath and I decided to buy grey and either plum or dusty purple towels.

Went to Kohl's, they didn't have nice towels in a purple I liked. Went to Marshall's, they had a purple but not grey. So I went to a different Marshall's and they did have grey. Except they were more of a taupe when I got them home. Ugh. Went to a different Kohl's. Found purple and dark grey towels, but no hand towels in either color and no washcloths in purple. Bought them anyway.

The next day, my sister tells me to check JCPenny and Macy's because they're both having sales. So I go to both those stores. Not impressed with either. Looked at another Kohl's for hand towels and nothing.

Today I decided that I like the light grey towels better than the dark grey. So I need to return the dark ones and buy light grey towels, hand towels and washcloths, as well as purple hand towels and washcloths. There is not one store in the area that has all of these items so I will need to either order online or go to three different stores. I also have a coupon issue and the sale was better when I bought the first set of towels so I can't just return them all and buy all new or buy online.

I'm about to set all the towels on fire and drip dry for the rest of my life. H likely agrees.

We have 3 kinds of towels in our house- clean, dirty, rags.  My new bathroom matches because I bought all white.

This makes me feel so much better about obsessing over the towels we registered for. We registered for the extra large Tommy Hilfiger towels in yellow and orange. Since we live in the middle of the mountains in NC hours from a Macy's we did it online. I read way too many reviews about towels. Settle on the TH ones. We get all the towels off the registry for the wedding but since we're in a stupid rental house the towels don't match so I like you, put them away. H gets them out because he thinks it's silly to not use brand new towels. He uses them. I finally come around to his way of thinking and use the towels. And I hate them. One wash and they lost all their fluffiness and feel really thin. I wanted big plush cozy towels. Now we have soft but thin towels and because H uses a towel once or twice before getting a new one, They've all been used and we can't return them.

Thank you for letting me air my grievances about towels.
  • I'm a towel freak too.  I have navy and coral for my bathroom, yellow and gray for FI's.  He never does his towel laundry and always has a coral towel in his bathroom.  I color coded on purpose!!

    Just older with low standards.

FWIW the Costco towels are fantastic.

OH FFS you shouldn't have told me that. Now I'm going to have to get someone with a membership to take me there!

I don't think you need to be a member to buy.  It might be worth the $1 shipping to try.
  • I can't judge anyone for obsessing over towels.  I bought and returned towels like six different times when I was decorating my apartment.  They had to be AN EXACT SHADE, and the rest of towels that didn't match could go to hell.

  • I really can't judge the towel obsession either. Mine have to feel a very particular way or else I can't stand to use them.

  • I used to be obsessed with things matching (bath towels to bathroom, kitchen towels to kitchen, etc) but I give zero fucks about it anymore.  We've painted rooms, gotten new dishes and I just don't care.

Ever since we became 5 and the towel use went through the roof, I don't care to spend the money to make them match.  If it dries, it's fine.

We DO have matchy guest towels, though.  I would never put out a maroon or navy hand towel in our purple/gray bathroom.  :)
  • Girl. Bed bath and beyond. towels. Purple. dark grey. Light grey. Medium grey. All the greys. All the colors.

  • Ugh, towels!  I used to buy The Big Ones at Kohls and loved them.  They were inexpensive, big, thick and lasted forever (are we still talking about towels??). Then they changed them.  They are now super thin and would better be called shop towels.  I found Vera Wang towels (also at Kohls) in the exact color I wanted and bought 2 sets.  These towel shed like crazy!  Even after many washings, I still have towel lint all over my bathroom after every use.

We don't have a Costco membership, but maybe I'll look there for my next towels.

  • Saturday I worked at a "Diplomacy Mission"  - the IL's all were going to an annual event at the family business and it'd looked odd if I didn't attend..  It was my first time getting to see that location and my instant assessment (before she even said a word) was in agreement with my SIL that the place needs a capital investment, but of course, she was complaining about not knowing what to do over the summer to either do bandaid fixes or capital investment, I said "you're right (on the capital investment), if we want the place to last another 40 years, it NEEDS the investment" (and mind you, late FIL & I were kindred spirits about not wanting to spend money unless an absolute necessity - I was the only person who ever matched him on that), suddenly it was the world's worst idea... GRRRR!  It's also sort of angering in the sense that this is our family's investment too and if they don't take care of it there's no question of why it hasn't been turning much of a profit as it was prior to FIL's passing...

...as for towels - I invested in ours when I was in college and they're still in great condition for my bathroom.  The ones that we bought when we purchased this house for the "matchy-matchy" ones, I chose by color scheme (Black) at BBB...  I love the huge ones that are snuggly and can wrap around the shoulders and still not give a peep show because they aren't long enough...

  • I'm really struggling with stupid Daylight Savings time. One hour should not make a big difference, but I am so not sleepy at all.

Also, I summoned all my positivity and began a workout routine in earnest over the weekend. Today I have been walking like a granny because my legs are so sore.

@thefanciestbeckler, sorry to hear you and DH have to be apart for that long. That's rough. FI studied abroad two summers back-to-back and was gone for 2 months each time (and both times leaving me to move us from one apartment into another, ugh!). The first time was hardest because he rarely had internet connection, so we weren't able to communicate except a few times. I found myself getting into a lot of TV shows, books, and workout routines those summers. In retrospect, it was actually kind of nice being able to center myself completely and independently, but all the same, it was so nice to have him back. Hang in there.

  • @tigerlily6 thank you so much for the kind words :) I'm definitely hoping to do some stuff I don't usually have time to do like work out or read. And I'm making a mental list of spring-y stuff I can do outside like planting flowers, getting a bird feeder, etc.
