Re: honeymoon

  • After quite a bit of debate we went with a travel agency (The Travel Store, we worked with Kathy Schultz).  We put together a rather complex trip with lots of traveling around - we are going to Napa, San Fran then 3 islands in Hawaii.

We thought it would be helpful to have an agent help us put it together and you can often get extra perks working through an agency.

Was it worth it?  I really have no idea and might have a better idea when we get back.  Hopefully I will come back and be able to say that by working through an agent we got tons of upgrades and special treatment.

We both travel quite a bit and if I was booking a regular vaca I would use Trip Advisor, Expedia, Trivago and Kayak to find the best deals.

  • We went through CT Travel with Sandi in Wallingford. Honestly, I probably could have booked it ourselves but I didn't want to deal with it. We picked Sandals in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She got us a lot of perks and because agents deal with resorts all the time they can get you certain things you wouldn't be able to alone. We are getting married in October, but aren't going on our honeymoon until February. So she was still able to get us the honeymoon package and some additional packages as well.
  • We are going to a dude ranch in PA. Booked it ourselves. But we're weird and not a typical honeymoon couple. We both ride horses and a week of unlimited riding is kind of epic.

  • We did an all inclusive in Aruba (Tamarijn), flights & hotel, and it was cheaper than any package we were given by my MIL's travel agent (who she was insisting we use.) After we got the initial prices from the TA, I did my own research and booked everything straight through the Tamarijn site, including non-stop flights on Jet Blue.

H's family is big on travel agents, and used one when we went on our big family trip to the Dominican Republic for Thanksgiving, and we had SO many issues. Our honeymoon was 100% issue free, we got free upgrades for a honeymoon package (dinners, champagne, etc.) and the all inclusive was SO worth it.

  • I agree with @GoldenPenguin.  If you are planning to go to an all inclusive there is no reason to use a travel agent.  You can just shop for deals online.

Enjoy the horses. I know I did. :)
  • Thanks! We can't wait. I ride English now so I'm switching to Western in July to get ready for it.
