Prom season - did you go to yours?

edited May 2016 in Chit Chat
My brother and one of the substitute teachers fixed me up with the teacher's younger son, who had just finished his freshman year of college. He was a cool guy but was clearly bored out of his skull. The after-prom was better; we went to a place that had bowling, miniature golf, go-carts, pool, and loads of video games.

I went with a date, but he was just a friend. We went with a group, stayed at the prom for about 30 minutes, and then went back to the hotel to party.

Junior year - went with a date (He was home schooled and I invited him because there'd otherwise be no way he'd have the opportunity to attend one - i.e. I felt sorry for him)...  It was about as exciting as watching paint dry to attend with him..

    Senior year - went solo...

But the funny part - I never attended After Prom (back then it was a veggie tray and open gym at the Armory), and I've probably attended at least 20-30 since but now working...

Went both years with my then BF (now FI)..

I did all the planning my junior year (and not to brag but it was seriously awesome).

Senior year's was terrible, a complete shit show, I wish we had skipped it.

We don't have prom, but I went to grade 12 grad with a big group of friends.  Almost the same thing, I think.  Our school didn't sponsor a after grad, cos they didn't want us drinking (ha ha).  Anyway, we went to a friends house after with a huge group of people.  We had our grade 12 PE camp the next morning, and we were told specifically that if we arrived too drunk to go, we wouldn't, so I didn't have too many that night.  We all slept all the way there in the vans too.

Went to junior and senior prom with my boyfriend. Skipped after prom to go rent movies/video games and have a sleepover in my living room after watching movies all night. It was fun.

Yes. It was boring, and the after-parties were better. I liked the dressing up part, though.

We do grad not prom, but there is a banquet with a dance and then a school sponsored dry after party that had a different theme every year. It was nice but I think that in the years since I graduated, it has become even bigger.

I went with a date. For junior prom, my date was just a friend. For senior prom, I went with a guy I was interested in, but deep down knew I had no future with. He didn't go to my school. I honestly don't even remember dancing with him or anything. I'm pretty sure I hung out with my girlfriends all night :) Spoiler alert- he's not around anymore and they are :D

I went to senior prom with FI back when we were just friends. I had what would best be described as a mullet hair cut and way too much black eye liner, it was 2006. He took me to a steak house not knowing I was a vegetarian so we both had soup and we forgot to take photos, ugh! I would not have believed you if you told me we were going to married 11 years later so I didn't think it was a big deal at the time. But he, his best friend (best woman in the wedding!) and I danced all night and that was fun.

I went to prom with my FI when we were seniors. We're having our reception in the same venue that our prom was held. I wish I had some pictures of it but they're all hidden away somewhere. I do have one of me in my prom dress because it was just an awesome dress. Hahaha.

    1. On the first day of 11th grade I said to a friend the year above me, "Hey you're in 12th grade now, you can take me to prom!" He did in fact ask me in the spring to be his date. He was not into dancing and I didn't know many other kids in his grade so I was bored out of my skull most of the night. Our group of friends had a hotel room for an afterparty but I didn't stay very long.

    2. Some of my best friends went to a different school so they found a guy without a date to escort me to their prom. He was also not into dancing, I spent most of the night consoling a friend whose date ditched her, and something I had at dinner disagreed with me so I felt too sick to attend the afterparty at my friend's cottage.

    3. For my own prom I went with my best friend. He sassed a teacher and spent most of the night being scolded by the vice principal, but I had a great time dancing with everyone. I continued dancing at the afterparty which was held in a field on a classmate's property. They hired a DJ, security, and shuttle service, it was wonderful. (Too bad I got so drunk I had to leave around midnight!)

We had both a junior and senior prom.  It was required you attend with a date and only of the opposite sex (Catholic High School).  So both times I attended with a friend.

We didn't have after prom events, but after both proms a group of us went to a diner and would have a sleepover at someone house.  Then the next day we went down the beach for the weekend.

I was homeschooled, so no official prom. But when we were seniors several of my girlfriends and I organized an outing where we got formal dresses, went out to a five star restaurant, and then saw a symphony. Yes, we were nerds. But we owned it and looked and felt fancy as hell.

FI apparently was going to go with a friend for his prom (Catholic school) but he misbehaved and got a demerit the morning before, which put enough on his record that week that he was not allowed to attend.

My law school now hosts a formal "ball" each year -- everybody jokes it is "law school prom." I think we'll try to go next year so we can finally do "prom" when we're 30.

I went junior and senior year with DH. Junior year we were just friends and I basically told him he was going to be my date. I went to a girlfriend's house after and we all ate lots of junk food and sweets and stayed up all night. Senior year DH and I had been dating for a while by that point and we had the after party at his house.

The prom itself was okay but the getting ready and dressing up part and after prom was the most fun.

Prom sucked.  My BF broke up with me at my senior prom.  He was elected prom king and decided he'd rather be with the prom queen because she put out and I didn't, so that was uber swell.  He's spent the 11 years since trying to get back with me and has refused to acknowledge that he stopped being a part of my life that night.

I went with my [gay] best friend as a date but we went as a big group of friends, no one went with actual dates, we all paired up with our friends. Our school had an after prom party that was to keep us from getting drunk and doing dumb shit after prom, almost the entire class went because at the end of the night (sunrise) they raffled off a car and you had to be there to win it. In between we went bowling.

It's also super weird to me that now is prom season, around here prom is after graduation (we graduated on a Sunday and prom was Monday).

Am I in the minority that enjoyed proms??
Our prom was for juniors and seniors, both years I went with the same boyfriend. Proms were in nice banquet halls and after-prom was a structured event at some recreation area (think rock climbing, inflatable sumo wrestling, basketball, etc).
The students did a ton of fundraising throughout the year, so prom tickets seemed pretty cheap compared to what students at other schools paid.
My first year I got a dress similar to what @ShesSoCold is wearing in her picture, except in navy blue (love your dress SSC!). My second year, my mom sewed my dress. It was a hot pink, two-piece ball gown, aw yeah.

We had decent food, good music, people danced... Fun times.

I went to my senior prom with my best guy friend. We had planned to go together months before, he was older and wore his air force dress uniform. We didn't really dance but I enjoyed all the drama, pretty sure we left early. Then we went to Promcore.... the anti-prom party thrown at the hardcore punk kids' house. That is still one of my favorite parties.

Junior year I went with my gay friend. My grandma called him my boyfriend for like 3 years after that, which was adorable.

Senior year my boyfriend was 23 years old and I thought that was way too creepy to bring him to a prom, so I went with a random guy friend. We didn't even get the professional pictures or anything.

It was moderately fun dancing with my girlfriends, but I'm with @addiecake getting drunk at the afterparty was my jam. My parents were very open to letting me do whatever I wanted as long as I never drove or got in the car with someone.

I didn't go. My bf at the time didn't want to go and didn't want me to go either. He was very controlling in an unhealthy way so it's a good thing he's in the past. In hindsight I should have gone with one of my best friends who went solo but at the time controlling bf hated that I was friends with him so I was too afraid to ask him.

Oh well not really something to dwell on but I have to say for anyone watching the new season of Modern Family I thought it was really sweet what Mitchell did for Cam since Cam didn't get to go to his own prom.

My mom still had that dress (for some reason) and I wore it to a prom at the trailer park last year. I had way more fun at that prom.

As a sophomore, I went to junior prom with my boyfriend, who was a junior.  (and after prom, which was a house party)
As a junior, I went to junior prom with a different boyfriend.  (did after prom, but don't remember what it was)
As a senior, I broke up with my boyfriend a couple months before the prom, and went to senior prom with a friend who was 26, from Russia, and had never been to a prom.  We had fun.  (and after prom, which was going to Dangerfield's - comedy club in NYC... and everyone cut school to go down the shore the next day, Friday)
As a freshman in college, I went to the senior prom (of my same high school) with a friend who was a year behind me.  (and after prom, but don't remember what it was)

No one went stag to proms at my high school; tickets were actually sold in "couples."

I loved my proms, and also went to both college formals and my law school formal... but then, I love a good dance.
