Wedding Woes

Venue Troubles and I'm Losing My Mind

I'm having so many troubles with my venue and I'm wishing more and more that we could just elope... Vegas is sounding pretty good!

We decided on Branford House, which is a totally gorgeous venue on the water in CT. I had read the reviews and basically everyone had said that the venue is amazing but that the manager is kind of a nightmare--non-responsive and generally difficult to get in touch with.

I didn't have too much trouble with her until we decided on a date. On July 23 (Sat) she had emailed me saying I was penciled in for our requested date and I just needed to get the contract and deposit there within the week.

So we got that all ready and it arrived the following Friday (I checked the USPS tracking). And since then... nothing. I've emailed twice, and called multiple times, but nothing. Today I finally called the main campus office (the venue is owned by the university), and they promised they would track her down personally... but I still haven't heard anything.

I'm terrified we're going to lose our date. I've already reached out to caterers, makeup person, day of coordinator, and DJ, all based on that day. If I have to start over again, I'm going to scream. The date also has sentimental value for me since it's when my parents were married.

We live out of state (6+ hours away) so it's not like we can just drop by and see what's going on. I heard from one other Branford bride who lost her original date over some other type of office oversight, so I'm kind of panicked.

Honestly, I kind of can't stand this whole process. I don't even really want a wedding. I want to marry my fiance because he's amazing, but all of this just seems like a huge hassle and waste of money. I loathe planning things with the very essence of my being and having to do all this crap is just sucking my soul out. I wish it all didn't have to be so complicated. (And I really wish the Branford House would get it together!)

Rant over. Thanks for listening!

All you can really do, since you are so far away.  Is to keep calling and trying to confirm your date.  I would keep calling the university too.  Does the even coordinator have a boss?  Try contacting that person directly.

But I would get ready for this person to be a nightmare to deal with for the entire process.  So either get used to it now or find a new venue.  You have seen the reviews that this person is bad at communicating and she still has a job.  So don't expect much to change!

  • OP: what is your date?
  • I would call the university again and ask to speak to a higher up about the lack of communication.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Branford House is really popular in this area.

What I'd do is not book anything until you get that date in writing.   It's a popular season now for weddings PLUS the semester is starting.   Both could be reason that this person is bogged down.   I'd continue to try to call the campus about the lack of communication but I would also hold on anything else until you know you're set.

Have you looked into Harkness as a backup?
