Um this LW would think I'm the worst parent ever

  • Who the hell doesn't drink when there are children around? Especially toddlers. Holy crap, those fuckers will drive you to drink!
    So do teenagers!  :D
  • LW needs to get off her high horse...  2.5 beers per adult (or just one of them drank out of <gasp> two glasses)..

I'm thinking the Mom has a case of Post Partum Anxiety/OCD...

  • Eh, I don't really drink, so a few beers would probably make me incapable of caring for a child (and yes, I have a toddler--she causes me to cry, not drink).  I would be alarmed if that was a regular sitter.  But I would trust parents to not get drunk around my kid, so I'd assume they were fine.

I do agree that even if the alcohol episode was an issue, she doesn't need to be panicking 2.5 years later...

  • Buffy asked for a sip of cranberry wine recently.  I"m of the mind that tryig was OK--I said she probably wouldn't like it, but she could try it.
Cue upset when I wouldn't let her have her own glass because she REALLY liked it.
I don't think I could fire a babysitter over cranberry wine

I'm guessing the LW wouldn't approve of this?

Yep.  That is me and my grandma @ 6 months old.    She had nice frosted mugs with glass bottoms for her beers.

OMG Lynda... that is such a wonderful memory. I love everything about this pic!

  • LW definitely needs to calm down. MIL often takes BIL's kids for a week at a time over school breaks, and she most definitely has a few glasses of wine some nights. When the whole family gets together, ALL the adults drink - sometimes starting in early afternoon - and there are at least 6-8 kids present. It's not like everyone is passed out drunk.

My dad and stepmom usually have a couple of beers or glasses of wine most nights, but it's not like they're ever drunk. I would absolutely trust them to watch my kids and manage their own alcohol consumption at the same time.

I definitely wouldn't be okay with a hired babysitter drinking, because they are hired and paid to do a job, but when you leave kids with family members, there should be a certain level of trust that the adults won't get reckless. If the parents weren't wasted, I don't see the problem.

One of the stories I remember my parents telling a lot involves alcohol and my sister... My parents were sitting on the porch, talking and drinking cans of Budweiser when my oldest sister was a probably 3-4. They were not paying close attention, and all of a sudden they realized that over the course of 30 minutes, my sister had drunk about half of my dad's beer. Oops. Nowadays, I'm sure some nosy neighbor would call CPS if they saw something like this, but no one was hurt.

  • My neighbor was home with his daughter while his wife was working on the night shift at our local hospital. He was carrying a box of alcohol  down the stairs to their basement bar. He fell, bottles broke all over him, hurt his ankle and the daughter came over to me for help. I got him cleaned up and in my car and went to the hospital. After checking into a treatment room we heard a nurse say "hey Sue your husband and I think his girlfriend are here and they smell like they have been drinking all day".

Geez! Very unprofessional, but I'm not entirely surprised that a medical staff member made the assumption.

Having had to take my kids to the ER/Urgent Care - Not surprising AT ALL!!!

My SIL fired my mom as a babysitter because her sister (SIL's sister, who has no children) said that the baby cried sometimes when my mom was there.

Your SIL and her sister need snatch punches.

Haha I agree. My sister and I were SO PISSED. My poor mom was taking time off work and driving like an hour to their house every week and then she's told that she shouldn't come any more because the whore sister is a better babysitter. My niece was like 6 months old.

Call me a dick but I hope SIL felt like shit about it later.

oh hell no. i would have told her to take care of her own damn kid.
  • I make wine and DK homebrews. Wolverine has tried both - she liked the sips of wine but wasn't a fan of the beer. We haven't let her try any liquor - I tell her the drinks are "too strong" for her.

She's never seen either of us drunk (although for that matter, I haven't actually been drunk since college). I don't think the grandparents having a few drinks while babysitting was a big deal. If they were falling down drunk and unable to actually care for the child or endangering the child (e.g. driving drunk) that's one thing, but it was just presented as a really uptight first time parent.
