Thursday!

Re: Thursday!

  • So to add to Cat's shitty day. I gave my mom and MIL my login info for my shutterfly account so I could buy wedding pictures for them. Instead of just adding the pictures she wants, my MIL deleted my entire order because she didn't want me to spend $20 on her.
    Wait. what?

    Who does that?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm at the ER waiting to find out if I need stitches for the first time in my life. I slipped this morning and hit my elbow on some tiled stairs that go from my kitchen to the basement/side door. It's not really that bad, but the gash is pretty wide open and I kind of doubt it will close up on its own. So this thing is basically chewing up my whole work day.

oh no.   Hope it heals up fast.

  • Anyway, GUESS WHO IS DOWN 15 LBS.?!?!?!?!

I'm so proud of myself. I'm at my previous "comfortable" weight where (when I was like 20) I could easily maintain with little effort. I'm going to see if I can get another 5-10 lbs. down and see how realistic it is to maintain. I do not want to be one of those constantly dieting "salad" people.

Continued hugs for you and Mom, Heffa. Also to you and your H, Mrs.conn.

Also I'm sorry I missed this before, but I'm so sorry for your loss, AB. I can't imagine. Hugs.

    YAYYYYYY

Owch! Stitches aren't fun. Had my first round of stitches a couple years ago. Hopefully your dr/nurse is good!

  • @short+sassy That sounds awesome!  I would love to do that too.  But I'm secretly one of those people who half hopes to be picked for Jury Duty too.

@SaintPaulGal I hope the visit (and stitches) go by quickly!

    @ShesSoCold Congrats!

So true. I'm bummed because it's unlikely I'll ever get to be a juror. I've taught classes on Constitutional Law, so I'd get bounced pretty quickly.

I'm this person too. Anyone I know who has been selected for jury duty is super bummed over it, but I have always wanted to do it. I've never been summoned :( I'm hoping I get picked sometime!

  • For anyone interested in being a mock juror, do a google search for "mock jury (your city)" or "focus group (your city)".  Or your local yellow pages with a similar search.  That should bring up all/most of the companies that offer that kind of service to law firms.  Contact each of them and request to be added to their database.

Focus groups are when they get a panel of people together to judge a product/service/advertising campaign/anything.  Those are fun and well paying also.  I've taste tested soda.  A local grocery store's ad campaign for their frequent shopper card.  A female panel of beer drinkers for an advertising campaign...but goddamnit, no taste testing.  WTF, lol?!?

Typically, the same companies do both mock jury trials and focus groups.

Craig's List employment section, usually the ETC portion (maybe p/t), will also have ads when a company is trying to sign people up for an upcoming mock trial.

For those of you who are secretly excited to be chosen for a real jury, there is a funny series of commercials on the ID (Investigation Discovery) channel about a woman who is a hard core fan of their channel.  This channel has tons of true crime shows.  My H calls it "murder porn".

Anyway, in one commercial, she gets a letter in the mail that she has been selected for jury duty.  And is super excited, like she just won a sweepstakes, and says something like, "It's happened!  It's finally happened!"  And starts doing a happy dance.  Her H side eyes her and jokes, "Maybe you'll be sequestered."  She stops her dancing and looks at him wide-eyed and says, "That. Would. Be. AWESOME!!!"

I'm addicted to ID.  It's on right now actually.

In all my years, I've only ONCE been called for jury duty.  That was in the islands.   I was released immediately.  So I've never served before.   DH has been called 3 times, but has never actually had to show up because they cancelled all 3 times.    My mom gets called up all the time it seems like.

  • Finally Thursday! I have dinner with my running group tonight to celebrate finishing our fall training.

H and I are still trying to work out Thanksgiving plans. Did anyone else have issues with this and family early in their marriages? Both of our families have always hosted T-Day dinner, so we've been splitting time between them. But this sucks. They live about an hour (or more) apart, both want us to spend a ton of time there, and we come from out of town so the dog (and cat) are with us, and the dog can't stay in a random place all day by himself. So it's a ton of running around, its exhausting, and not all that enjoyable. Add to that H is an introvert who really prefers not to be around large groups of people.

It's amazing to me how far the smoke has travelled @Heffalump . This was 10 miles from where I lived. No filter.
We are headed to SC this weekend from Indiana. Normally we go through Knoxville to Asheville down to Columbia. Are the interstates ok? We have thought about an alternate route avoiding the TN/NC mountains altogether.

  • @DrillSergeantCat was the turkey frozen?  Are you having hot temps?  If the first answer is yes and the second no, your turkey is fine.  It takes 2 days to thaw out a frozen turkey.

It takes longer than 2 days for a frozen turkey to thaw in my experience! Many a time I've been running water over a turkey that has been thawing for days!

Hi to everyone from late in the day.

I was volunteering at a Junior Achievement event today - we were at a job fair for 8th graders in a nearby school district. We ran a photo booth with some little Polaroids and props of items where our company's technology is used. The kids had fun - although I felt like I had run a marathon by the end of the fair. Most of the kids were more excited about the cameras than careers in STEM (or the other fields that we hire) - but if we made at least a few of the kids think about the future, we had an impact.
The cameras were cute, but operation was spotty at best. I was running at about 67% quality pictures.

re families/holidays: we've been married for 10 years. easiest solution is to up and move across the country from everyone, and tell them they're welcome to visit.

when we lived in Philly, the ILs were local, and my family was about 300mi away. We would try to go to visit my family for at least one of the major holidays - Christmas, Easter, or Thanksgiving each year. The other ones we spent with ILs, and sometimes my family would come visit us.

My advice would be to compromise on alternating years or draw a line in the sand, offer to host, and make people come to you. Travel is time consuming and expensive - especially with holidays. I wouldn't want to be splitting the day with a longish drive in between and carting the animals all over. We get crap (mainly from ILs and OSIL) about not travelling for every family event ever. Seriously people, we live halfway across the country, and it costs us around $1300-1500ish(+) to visit (including airfare, parking at the airport, boarding the dogs, meals out, rental cars, etc.) plus vacation time. Only my parents and MIL/FIL really ever come to visit us, so  we've pushed back a lot more on complaints on how people "never see [us]" - guys, planes fly both ways or hop in you car and drive 1500-1600mi each way. We have 2 guest rooms and an air mattress - you're welcome to visit.
We have friends locally that usually invite us for holiday dinners, and we're doing a cruise over Christmas, this year - we've made it a point to never travel to the family for holidays because we don't want the drama or guilt trips or the sense of obligation of having to go to the other family the next time. This works for us, but it's really a question of talking it out and deciding what's best for you. Maybe you guys go to one of thanksgiving, one for christmas, and you host easter. (or whatever holidays you celebrate). ILs have taken to trading off with MIL/FIL, OSIL, YSIL, and YSIL's IL's - so they will take turns hosting at one of the 4 houses and it also helps YSIL's situation of having to split time. (win for all)

  • Oh no, @SaintPaulGal! Sending healing vibes!

Hugs to you and Hiccup, @AtomicBlonde!

FW got her ring back! Someone found it in the studio and returned it to her. That restores my faith in humanity a little.

Work was insane. I'm so glad I have my meditation meeting tonight!

Re: holidays. FW and I are going to FMIL's for Christmas this year; it's the first time I've been away from my family at Christmas. (Also the first time FMIL and I meet.) My mother hasn't tried the guilt trip (yet). We're planning to see my family the Sunday before Christmas instead.

  • @ILoveBeachMusic I can't speak for the interstate after it splits towards Asheville but I drove through Knoxville and northern TN on my way to and from Cincinnati and the roads were ok there. On my way to Cincy there were some fires really close to the road but no lanes closed. On the way home a few days later the fires were mostly out.

Thanks for the info. H hasn't decided what he wants to do. I'm all for the alternate route because I HATE getting stuck on the interstate between Knoxville and Asheville. DS1 said they have been smelling smoke in Columbia for a week and the air is hazy. Guess we picked the wrong weekend for a visit!

There may not be a "right" weekend to visit for a while, if the weather forecast in Columbia is anything like Chattanooga's. We aren't going to see rain for who knows how long. It's such a shame to see all the damage done by the fires. I hope you guys have a great trip though and are able to enjoy family time regardless of the smoke!
